Perversions
“चत्तारोमे, भिक्खवे, सञ्ञाविपल्लासा चित्तविपल्लासा दिट्ठिविपल्लासा। कतमे चत्तारो?
“Cattārome, bhikkhave, saññāvipallāsā cittavipallāsā diṭṭhivipallāsā. Katame cattāro?
“Bhikkhus, there are these four perversions of perception, mind, and view. What four?
अनिच्चे, भिक्खवे, निच्चन्ति सञ्ञाविपल्लासो चित्तविपल्लासो दिट्ठिविपल्लासो;
Anicce, bhikkhave, niccanti saññāvipallāso cittavipallāso diṭṭhivipallāso;
Taking impermanence as permanence.
दुक्खे, भिक्खवे, सुखन्ति सञ्ञाविपल्लासो चित्तविपल्लासो दिट्ठिविपल्लासो;
dukkhe, bhikkhave, sukhanti saññāvipallāso cittavipallāso diṭṭhivipallāso;
Taking suffering as happiness.
अनत्तनि, भिक्खवे, अत्ताति सञ्ञाविपल्लासो चित्तविपल्लासो दिट्ठिविपल्लासो;
anattani, bhikkhave, attāti saññāvipallāso cittavipallāso diṭṭhivipallāso;
Taking not-self as self.
असुभे, भिक्खवे, सुभन्ति सञ्ञाविपल्लासो चित्तविपल्लासो दिट्ठिविपल्लासो।
asubhe, bhikkhave, subhanti saññāvipallāso cittavipallāso diṭṭhivipallāso.
Taking ugliness as beauty.
इमे खो, भिक्खवे, चत्तारो सञ्ञाविपल्लासा चित्तविपल्लासा दिट्ठिविपल्लासा।
Ime kho, bhikkhave, cattāro saññāvipallāsā cittavipallāsā diṭṭhivipallāsā.
These are the four perversions of perception, mind, and view.
चत्तारोमे, भिक्खवे, नसञ्ञाविपल्लासा नचित्तविपल्लासा नदिट्ठिविपल्लासा। कतमे चत्तारो?
Cattārome, bhikkhave, nasaññāvipallāsā nacittavipallāsā nadiṭṭhivipallāsā. Katame cattāro?
There are these four corrections of perception, mind, and view. What four?

Taking suffering as suffering.

Taking not-self as not-self.
असुभे, भिक्खवे, असुभन्ति नसञ्ञाविपल्लासो नचित्तविपल्लासो नदिट्ठिविपल्लासो।
asubhe, bhikkhave, asubhanti nasaññāvipallāso nacittavipallāso nadiṭṭhivipallāso.
Taking ugliness as ugliness.
इमे खो, भिक्खवे, चत्तारो नसञ्ञाविपल्लासा नचित्तविपल्लासा नदिट्ठिविपल्लासाति।
Ime kho, bhikkhave, cattāro nasaññāvipallāsā nacittavipallāsā nadiṭṭhivipallāsāti.
These are the four corrections of perception, mind, and view.
अनिच्चे निच्चसञ्ञिनो, दुक्खे च सुखसञ्ञिनो; अनत्तनि च अत्ताति, असुभे सुभसञ्ञिनो; मिच्छादिट्ठिहता सत्ता, खित्तचित्ता विसञ्ञिनो।
Anicce niccasaññino, dukkhe ca sukhasaññino; Anattani ca attāti, asubhe subhasaññino; Micchādiṭṭhihatā sattā, khittacittā visaññino.
Perceiving impermanence as permanence, suffering as happiness, not-self as self, and ugliness as beauty—sentient beings are ruined by wrong view, deranged, out of their minds.
ते योगयुत्ता मारस्स, अयोगक्खेमिनो जना; सत्ता गच्छन्ति संसारं, जातिमरणगामिनो।
Te yogayuttā mārassa, ayogakkhemino janā; Sattā gacchanti saṁsāraṁ, jātimaraṇagāmino.
Yoked by Māra’s yoke, these people find no sanctuary from the yoke. Sentient beings continue to transmigrate, with ongoing birth and death.
यदा च बुद्धा लोकस्मिं, उप्पज्जन्ति पभङ्करा; ते इमं धम्मं पकासेन्ति, दुक्खूपसमगामिनं।
Yadā ca buddhā lokasmiṁ, Uppajjanti pabhaṅkarā; Te imaṁ dhammaṁ1 pakāsenti, Dukkhūpasamagāminaṁ.
But when the Buddhas arise in the world, those beacons reveal this teaching, that leads to the stilling of suffering.
तेसं सुत्वान सप्पञ्ञा, सचित्तं पच्चलद्धा ते; अनिच्चं अनिच्चतो दक्खुं, दुक्खमद्दक्खु दुक्खतो।
Tesaṁ sutvāna sappaññā, sacittaṁ paccaladdhā te; Aniccaṁ aniccato dakkhuṁ, dukkhamaddakkhu dukkhato.
When a wise person hears them, they get their mind back. Seeing impermanence as impermanence, suffering as suffering,
अनत्तनि अनत्ताति, असुभं असुभतद्दसुं; सम्मादिट्ठिसमादाना, सब्बं दुक्खं उपच्चगुन्”ति।
Anattani anattāti, asubhaṁ asubhataddasuṁ; Sammādiṭṭhisamādānā, sabbaṁ dukkhaṁ upaccagun”ti.
not-self as not-self, and ugliness as ugliness—taking up right view, they’ve risen above all suffering.”
