Powers in Detail
“សត្តិមានិ, ភិក្ខវេ, ពលានិ។ កតមានិ សត្ត? សទ្ធាពលំ, វីរិយពលំ, ហិរីពលំ, ឱត្តប្បពលំ, សតិពលំ, សមាធិពលំ, បញ្ញាពលំ។
“Bhikkhus, there are these seven powers. What seven? The powers of faith, energy, conscience, prudence, mindfulness, immersion, and wisdom.
កតមញ្ច, ភិក្ខវេ, សទ្ធាពលំ? ឥធ, ភិក្ខវេ, អរិយសាវកោ សទ្ធោ ហោតិ, សទ្ទហតិ តថាគតស្ស ពោធិំ: ‘ឥតិបិ សោ ភគវា អរហំ សម្មាសម្ពុទ្ធោ …បេ… សត្ថា ទេវមនុស្សានំ ពុទ្ធោ ភគវាៜតិ។ ឥទំ វុច្ចតិ, ភិក្ខវេ, សទ្ធាពលំ។
And what is the power of faith? It’s when a noble disciple has faith in the Realized One’s awakening: ‘That Blessed One is perfected, a fully awakened Buddha, accomplished in knowledge and conduct, holy, knower of the world, supreme guide for those who wish to train, teacher of gods and humans, awakened, blessed.’ This is called the power of faith.
កតមញ្ច, ភិក្ខវេ, វីរិយពលំ? ឥធ, ភិក្ខវេ, អរិយសាវកោ អារទ្ធវីរិយោ វិហរតិ អកុសលានំ ធម្មានំ បហានាយ, កុសលានំ ធម្មានំ ឧបសម្បទាយ, ថាមវា ទឡ្ហបរក្កមោ អនិក្ខិត្តធុរោ កុសលេសុ ធម្មេសុ។ ឥទំ វុច្ចតិ, ភិក្ខវេ, វីរិយពលំ។
And what is the power of energy? It’s when a noble disciple lives with energy roused up for giving up unskillful qualities and embracing skillful qualities. They’re strong, staunchly vigorous, not slacking off when it comes to developing skillful qualities. This is called the power of energy.
កតមញ្ច, ភិក្ខវេ, ហិរីពលំ? ឥធ, ភិក្ខវេ, អរិយសាវកោ ហិរីមា ហោតិ, ហិរីយតិ កាយទុច្ចរិតេន វចីទុច្ចរិតេន មនោទុច្ចរិតេន, ហិរីយតិ បាបកានំ អកុសលានំ ធម្មានំ សមាបត្តិយា។ ឥទំ វុច្ចតិ, ភិក្ខវេ, ហិរីពលំ។
And what is the power of conscience? It’s when a noble disciple has a conscience. They’re conscientious about bad conduct by way of body, speech, and mind, and conscientious about acquiring any bad, unskillful qualities. This is called the power of conscience.
កតមញ្ច, ភិក្ខវេ, ឱត្តប្បពលំ? ឥធ, ភិក្ខវេ, អរិយសាវកោ ឱត្តប្បី ហោតិ, ឱត្តប្បតិ កាយទុច្ចរិតេន វចីទុច្ចរិតេន មនោទុច្ចរិតេន, ឱត្តប្បតិ បាបកានំ អកុសលានំ ធម្មានំ សមាបត្តិយា។ ឥទំ វុច្ចតិ, ភិក្ខវេ, ឱត្តប្បពលំ។
And what is the power of prudence? It’s when a noble disciple is prudent. They’re prudent when it comes to bad conduct by way of body, speech, and mind, and prudent when it comes to the acquiring of any bad, unskillful qualities. This is called the power of prudence.
កតមញ្ច, ភិក្ខវេ, សតិពលំ? ឥធ, ភិក្ខវេ, អរិយសាវកោ សតិមា ហោតិ បរមេន សតិនេបក្កេន សមន្នាគតោ ចិរកតម្បិ ចិរភាសិតម្បិ សរិតា អនុស្សរិតា។ ឥទំ វុច្ចតិ, ភិក្ខវេ, សតិពលំ។
And what is the power of mindfulness? It’s when a noble disciple is mindful. They have utmost mindfulness and alertness, and can remember and recall what was said and done long ago. This is called the power of mindfulness.
កតមញ្ច, ភិក្ខវេ, សមាធិពលំ? ឥធ, ភិក្ខវេ, អរិយសាវកោ វិវិច្ចេវ កាមេហិ …បេ… ចតុត្ថំ ឈានំ ឧបសម្បជ្ជ វិហរតិ។ ឥទំ វុច្ចតិ, ភិក្ខវេ, សមាធិពលំ។
And what is the power of immersion? It’s when a noble disciple, quite secluded from sensual pleasures, secluded from unskillful qualities, enters and remains in the first jhāna, which has the rapture and bliss born of seclusion, while placing the mind and keeping it connected. … Giving up pleasure and pain, and ending former happiness and sadness, they enter and remain in the fourth jhāna, without pleasure or pain, with pure equanimity and mindfulness. This is called the power of immersion.
កតមញ្ច, ភិក្ខវេ, បញ្ញាពលំ? ឥធ, ភិក្ខវេ, អរិយសាវកោ បញ្ញវា ហោតិ ឧទយត្ថគាមិនិយា បញ្ញាយ សមន្នាគតោ អរិយាយ និព្ពេធិកាយ សម្មា ទុក្ខក្ខយគាមិនិយា។ ឥទំ វុច្ចតិ, ភិក្ខវេ, បញ្ញាពលំ។
And what is the power of wisdom? It’s when a noble disciple is wise. They have the wisdom of arising and passing away which is noble, penetrative, and leads to the complete ending of suffering. This is called the power of wisdom.
ឥមានិ ខោ, ភិក្ខវេ, សត្ត ពលានីតិ។
These are the seven powers.
សទ្ធាពលំ វីរិយញ្ច, ហិរី ឱត្តប្បិយំ ពលំ; សតិពលំ សមាធិ ច, បញ្ញា វេ សត្តមំ ពលំ; ឯតេហិ ពលវា ភិក្ខុ, សុខំ ជីវតិ បណ្ឌិតោ។
The powers are faith and energy, conscience and prudence, mindfulness and immersion, and wisdom as the seventh power. Empowered by these, an astute bhikkhu lives happily.
យោនិសោ វិចិនេ ធម្មំ, បញ្ញាយត្ថំ វិបស្សតិ; បជ្ជោតស្សេវ និព្ពានំ, វិមោក្ខោ ហោតិ ចេតសោ”តិ។
They should examine the teaching rationally, discerning the meaning with wisdom. The liberation of their heart is like a lamp going out.”
