“पञ्चिमानि, भिक्खवे, सेखबलानि। कतमानि पञ्च? सद्धाबलं, हिरीबलं, ओत्तप्पबलं, वीरियबलं, पञ्ञाबलं।
“Pañcimāni, bhikkhave, sekhabalāni. Katamāni pañca? Saddhābalaṁ, hirībalaṁ, ottappabalaṁ, vīriyabalaṁ, paññābalaṁ.
“Bhikkhus, there are these five powers of a trainee. What five? The powers of faith, conscience, prudence, energy, and wisdom.
कतमञ्च, भिक्खवे, सद्धाबलं? इध, भिक्खवे, अरियसावको सद्धो होति, सद्दहति तथागतस्स बोधिं: ‘इतिपि सो भगवा अरहं सम्मासम्बुद्धो विज्जाचरणसम्पन्नो सुगतो लोकविदू अनुत्तरो पुरिसदम्मसारथि सत्था देवमनुस्सानं बुद्धो भगवाऽति। इदं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, सद्धाबलं।
Katamañca, bhikkhave, saddhābalaṁ? Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako saddho hoti, saddahati tathāgatassa bodhiṁ: ‘itipi so bhagavā arahaṁ sammāsambuddho vijjācaraṇasampanno sugato lokavidū anuttaro purisadammasārathi satthā devamanussānaṁ buddho bhagavā’ti. Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, saddhābalaṁ.
And what is the power of faith? It’s when a noble disciple has faith in the Realized One’s awakening: ‘That Blessed One is perfected, a fully awakened Buddha, accomplished in knowledge and conduct, holy, knower of the world, supreme guide for those who wish to train, teacher of gods and humans, awakened, blessed.’ This is called the power of faith.
कतमञ्च, भिक्खवे, हिरीबलं? इध, भिक्खवे, अरियसावको हिरीमा होति, हिरीयति कायदुच्चरितेन वचीदुच्चरितेन मनोदुच्चरितेन, हिरीयति पापकानं अकुसलानं धम्मानं समापत्तिया। इदं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, हिरीबलं।
Katamañca, bhikkhave, hirībalaṁ? Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako hirīmā hoti, hirīyati kāyaduccaritena vacīduccaritena manoduccaritena, hirīyati pāpakānaṁ akusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ samāpattiyā. Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, hirībalaṁ.
And what is the power of conscience? It’s when a noble disciple has a conscience. They’re conscientious about bad conduct by way of body, speech, and mind, and conscientious about having any bad, unskillful qualities. This is called the power of conscience.
कतमञ्च, भिक्खवे, ओत्तप्पबलं? इध, भिक्खवे, अरियसावको ओत्तप्पी होति, ओत्तप्पति कायदुच्चरितेन वचीदुच्चरितेन मनोदुच्चरितेन, ओत्तप्पति पापकानं अकुसलानं धम्मानं समापत्तिया। इदं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, ओत्तप्पबलं।
Katamañca, bhikkhave, ottappabalaṁ? Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako ottappī hoti, ottappati kāyaduccaritena vacīduccaritena manoduccaritena, ottappati pāpakānaṁ akusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ samāpattiyā. Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, ottappabalaṁ.
And what is the power of prudence? It’s when a noble disciple is prudent. They’re prudent when it comes to bad conduct by way of body, speech, and mind, and prudent when it comes to acquiring any bad, unskillful qualities. This is called the power of prudence.
कतमञ्च, भिक्खवे, वीरियबलं? इध, भिक्खवे, अरियसावको आरद्धवीरियो विहरति अकुसलानं धम्मानं पहानाय, कुसलानं धम्मानं उपसम्पदाय, थामवा दळ्हपरक्कमो अनिक्खित्तधुरो कुसलेसु धम्मेसु। इदं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, वीरियबलं।
Katamañca, bhikkhave, vīriyabalaṁ? Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako āraddhavīriyo viharati akusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ pahānāya, kusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ upasampadāya, thāmavā daḷhaparakkamo anikkhittadhuro kusalesu dhammesu. Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, vīriyabalaṁ.
And what is the power of energy? It’s when a noble disciple lives with energy roused up for giving up unskillful qualities and embracing skillful qualities. They’re strong, staunchly vigorous, not slacking off when it comes to developing skillful qualities. This is called the power of energy.
कतमञ्च, भिक्खवे, पञ्ञाबलं? इध, भिक्खवे, अरियसावको पञ्ञवा होति उदयत्थगामिनिया पञ्ञाय समन्नागतो अरियाय निब्बेधिकाय सम्मा दुक्खक्खयगामिनिया। इदं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, पञ्ञाबलं। इमानि खो, भिक्खवे, पञ्च सेखबलानि।
Katamañca, bhikkhave, paññābalaṁ? Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako paññavā hoti udayatthagāminiyā paññāya samannāgato ariyāya nibbedhikāya sammā dukkhakkhayagāminiyā. Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, paññābalaṁ. Imāni kho, bhikkhave, pañca sekhabalāni.
And what is the power of wisdom? It’s when a noble disciple is wise. They have the wisdom of arising and passing away which is noble, penetrative, and leads to the complete ending of suffering. This is called the power of wisdom. These are the five powers of a trainee.
तस्मातिह, भिक्खवे, एवं सिक्खितब्बं: ‘सद्धाबलेन समन्नागता भविस्साम सेखबलेन, हिरीबलेन … ओत्तप्पबलेन … वीरियबलेन … पञ्ञाबलेन समन्नागता भविस्साम सेखबलेनाऽति। एवञ्हि खो, भिक्खवे, सिक्खितब्बन्”ति।
Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, evaṁ sikkhitabbaṁ: ‘saddhābalena samannāgatā bhavissāma sekhabalena, hirībalena … ottappabalena … vīriyabalena … paññābalena samannāgatā bhavissāma sekhabalenā’ti. Evañhi kho, bhikkhave, sikkhitabban”ti.
So you should train like this: ‘We will have the trainee’s powers of faith, conscience, prudence, energy, and wisdom.’ That’s how you should train.”
