    एवं मे सुतं—एकं समयं भगवा सावत्थियं विहरति जेतवने अनाथपिण्डिकस्स आरामे …

    Evaṁ me sutaṁ—ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme …

    So I have heard. At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery. …

    “चत्तारोमे, भिक्खवे, आहारा भूतानं वा सत्तानं ठितिया सम्भवेसीनं वा अनुग्गहाय। कतमे चत्तारो? कबळीकारो आहारो ओळारिको वा सुखुमो वा, फस्सो दुतियो, मनोसञ्चेतना ततिया, विञ्ञाणं चतुत्थं। इमे खो, भिक्खवे, चत्तारो आहारा भूतानं वा सत्तानं ठितिया सम्भवेसीनं वा अनुग्गहाय।

    “cattārome, bhikkhave, āhārā bhūtānaṁ vā sattānaṁ ṭhitiyā sambhavesīnaṁ vā anuggahāya. Katame cattāro? Kabaḷīkāro āhāro oḷāriko vā sukhumo vā, phasso dutiyo, manosañcetanā tatiyā, viññāṇaṁ catutthaṁ. Ime kho, bhikkhave, cattāro āhārā bhūtānaṁ vā sattānaṁ ṭhitiyā sambhavesīnaṁ vā anuggahāya.

    “Bhikkhus, there are these four fuels. They maintain sentient beings that have been born and help those that are about to be born. What four? Solid food, whether coarse or fine; contact is the second, mental intention the third, and consciousness the fourth. These are the four fuels that maintain sentient beings that have been born and help those that are about to be born.

    इमे, भिक्खवे, चत्तारो आहारा किंनिदाना किंसमुदया किंजातिका किंपभवा? इमे चत्तारो आहारा तण्हानिदाना तण्हासमुदया तण्हाजातिका तण्हापभवा। तण्हा चायं, भिक्खवे, किंनिदाना किंसमुदया किंजातिका किंपभवा? तण्हा वेदनानिदाना वेदनासमुदया वेदनाजातिका वेदनापभवा। वेदना चायं, भिक्खवे, किंनिदाना किंसमुदया किंजातिका किंपभवा? वेदना फस्सनिदाना फस्ससमुदया फस्सजातिका फस्सपभवा। फस्सो चायं, भिक्खवे, किंनिदानो किंसमुदयो किंजातिको किंपभवो? फस्सो सळायतननिदानो सळायतनसमुदयो सळायतनजातिको सळायतनपभवो। सळायतनञ्चिदं, भिक्खवे, किंनिदानं किंसमुदयं किंजातिकं किंपभवं? सळायतनं नामरूपनिदानं नामरूपसमुदयं नामरूपजातिकं नामरूपपभवं। नामरूपञ्चिदं, भिक्खवे, किंनिदानं किंसमुदयं किंजातिकं किंपभवं? नामरूपं विञ्ञाणनिदानं विञ्ञाणसमुदयं विञ्ञाणजातिकं विञ्ञाणपभवं। विञ्ञाणञ्चिदं, भिक्खवे, किंनिदानं किंसमुदयं किंजातिकं किंपभवं? विञ्ञाणं सङ्खारनिदानं सङ्खारसमुदयं सङ्खारजातिकं सङ्खारपभवं। सङ्खारा चिमे, भिक्खवे, किंनिदाना किंसमुदया किंजातिका किंपभवा? सङ्खारा अविज्जानिदाना अविज्जासमुदया अविज्जाजातिका अविज्जापभवा।

    Ime, bhikkhave, cattāro āhārā kiṁnidānā kiṁsamudayā kiṁjātikā kiṁpabhavā? Ime cattāro āhārā taṇhānidānā taṇhāsamudayā taṇhājātikā taṇhāpabhavā. Taṇhā cāyaṁ, bhikkhave, kiṁnidānā kiṁsamudayā kiṁjātikā kiṁpabhavā? Taṇhā vedanānidānā vedanāsamudayā vedanājātikā vedanāpabhavā. Vedanā cāyaṁ, bhikkhave, kiṁnidānā kiṁsamudayā kiṁjātikā kiṁpabhavā? Vedanā phassanidānā phassasamudayā phassajātikā phassapabhavā. Phasso cāyaṁ, bhikkhave, kiṁnidāno kiṁsamudayo kiṁjātiko kiṁpabhavo? Phasso saḷāyatananidāno saḷāyatanasamudayo saḷāyatanajātiko saḷāyatanapabhavo. Saḷāyatanañcidaṁ, bhikkhave, kiṁnidānaṁ kiṁsamudayaṁ kiṁjātikaṁ kiṁpabhavaṁ? Saḷāyatanaṁ nāmarūpanidānaṁ nāmarūpasamudayaṁ nāmarūpajātikaṁ nāmarūpapabhavaṁ. Nāmarūpañcidaṁ, bhikkhave, kiṁnidānaṁ kiṁsamudayaṁ kiṁjātikaṁ kiṁpabhavaṁ? Nāmarūpaṁ viññāṇanidānaṁ viññāṇasamudayaṁ viññāṇajātikaṁ viññāṇapabhavaṁ. Viññāṇañcidaṁ, bhikkhave, kiṁnidānaṁ kiṁsamudayaṁ kiṁjātikaṁ kiṁpabhavaṁ? Viññāṇaṁ saṅkhāranidānaṁ saṅkhārasamudayaṁ saṅkhārajātikaṁ saṅkhārapabhavaṁ. Saṅkhārā cime, bhikkhave, kiṁnidānā kiṁsamudayā kiṁjātikā kiṁpabhavā? Saṅkhārā avijjānidānā avijjāsamudayā avijjājātikā avijjāpabhavā.

    What is the source, origin, birthplace, and inception of these four fuels? Craving. And what is the source, origin, birthplace, and inception of craving? Feeling. And what is the source of feeling? Contact. And what is the source of contact? The six sense fields. And what is the source of the six sense fields? Name and form. And what is the source of name and form? Consciousness. And what is the source of consciousness? Choices. And what is the source of choices? Ignorance.

    इति खो, भिक्खवे, अविज्जापच्चया सङ्खारा;

    Iti kho, bhikkhave, avijjāpaccayā saṅkhārā;

    And so, ignorance is a condition for choices.

    सङ्खारपच्चया विञ्ञाणं …पे… एवमेतस्स केवलस्स दुक्खक्खन्धस्स समुदयो होति। अविज्जाय त्वेव असेसविरागनिरोधा सङ्खारनिरोधो; सङ्खारनिरोधा विञ्ञाणनिरोधो …पे… एवमेतस्स केवलस्स दुक्खक्खन्धस्स निरोधो होती”ति।

    saṅkhārapaccayā viññāṇaṁ …pe… evametassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa samudayo hoti. Avijjāya tveva asesavirāganirodhā saṅkhāranirodho; saṅkhāranirodhā viññāṇanirodho …pe… evametassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa nirodho hotī”ti.

    Choices are a condition for consciousness. … That is how this entire mass of suffering originates. When ignorance fades away and ceases with nothing left over, choices cease. When choices cease, consciousness ceases. … That is how this entire mass of suffering ceases.”

    पठमं।

    Paṭhamaṁ.
