    The Abuser

    एकं समयं भगवा राजगहे विहरति वेळुवने कलन्दकनिवापे।

    Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā rājagahe viharati veḷuvane kalandakanivāpe.

    At one time the Buddha was staying near Rājagaha, in the Bamboo Grove, the squirrels’ feeding ground.

    अस्सोसि खो अक्कोसकभारद्वाजो ब्राह्मणो: “भारद्वाजगोत्तो किर ब्राह्मणो समणस्स गोतमस्स सन्तिके अगारस्मा अनगारियं पब्बजितो”ति कुपितो अनत्तमनो येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवन्तं असब्भाहि फरुसाहि वाचाहि अक्कोसति परिभासति। एवं वुत्ते, भगवा अक्कोसकभारद्वाजं ब्राह्मणं एतदवोच:

    Assosi kho akkosakabhāradvājo brāhmaṇo: “bhāradvājagotto kira brāhmaṇo samaṇassa gotamassa santike agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajito”ti kupito anattamano yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ asabbhāhi pharusāhi vācāhi akkosati paribhāsati. Evaṁ vutte, bhagavā akkosakabhāradvājaṁ brāhmaṇaṁ etadavoca:

    The brahmin Bhāradvāja the Rude heard a rumor that a brahmin of the Bhāradvāja clan had gone forth from the lay life to homelessness in the presence of the ascetic Gotama. Angry and displeased he went to the Buddha and abused and insulted him with rude, harsh words. When he had spoken, the Buddha said to him:

    “तं किं मञ्ञसि, ब्राह्मण, अपि नु खो ते आगच्छन्ति मित्तामच्चा ञातिसालोहिता अतिथियो”ति?

    “Taṁ kiṁ maññasi, brāhmaṇa, api nu kho te āgacchanti mittāmaccā ñātisālohitā atithiyo”ti?

    “What do you think, brahmin? Do friends and colleagues, relatives and family members, and guests still come to visit you?”

    “अप्पेकदा मे, भो गोतम, आगच्छन्ति मित्तामच्चा ञातिसालोहिता अतिथियो”ति।

    “Appekadā me, bho gotama, āgacchanti mittāmaccā ñātisālohitā atithiyo”ti.

    “Sometimes they do, Master Gotama.”

    “तं किं मञ्ञसि, ब्राह्मण, अपि नु तेसं अनुप्पदेसि खादनीयं वा भोजनीयं वा सायनीयं वा”ति?

    “Taṁ kiṁ maññasi, brāhmaṇa, api nu tesaṁ anuppadesi khādanīyaṁ vā bhojanīyaṁ vā sāyanīyaṁ vā”ti?

    “Do you then serve them with fresh and cooked foods and savories?”

    “अप्पेकदा नेसाहं, भो गोतम, अनुप्पदेमि खादनीयं वा भोजनीयं वा सायनीयं वा”ति।

    “Appekadā nesāhaṁ, bho gotama, anuppademi khādanīyaṁ vā bhojanīyaṁ vā sāyanīyaṁ vā”ti.

    “Sometimes I do.”

    “सचे खो पन ते, ब्राह्मण, नप्पटिग्गण्हन्ति, कस्स तं होती”ति?

    “Sace kho pana te, brāhmaṇa, nappaṭiggaṇhanti, kassa taṁ hotī”ti?

    “But if they don’t accept it, brahmin, who does it belong to?”

    “सचे ते, भो गोतम, नप्पटिग्गण्हन्ति, अम्हाकमेव तं होती”ति।

    “Sace te, bho gotama, nappaṭiggaṇhanti, amhākameva taṁ hotī”ti.

    “In that case it still belongs to me.”

    “एवमेव खो, ब्राह्मण, यं त्वं अम्हे अनक्कोसन्ते अक्कोससि, अरोसेन्ते रोसेसि, अभण्डन्ते भण्डसि, तं ते मयं नप्पटिग्गण्हाम। तवेवेतं, ब्राह्मण, होति; तवेवेतं, ब्राह्मण, होति।

    “Evameva kho, brāhmaṇa, yaṁ tvaṁ amhe anakkosante akkosasi, arosente rosesi, abhaṇḍante bhaṇḍasi, taṁ te mayaṁ nappaṭiggaṇhāma. Tavevetaṁ, brāhmaṇa, hoti; tavevetaṁ, brāhmaṇa, hoti.

    “In the same way, brahmin, when you abuse, harass, and attack us who do not abuse, harass, and attack, we don’t accept it. It still belongs to you, brahmin, it still belongs to you!

    यो खो, ब्राह्मण, अक्कोसन्तं पच्चक्कोसति, रोसेन्तं पटिरोसेति, भण्डन्तं पटिभण्डति, अयं वुच्चति, ब्राह्मण, सम्भुञ्जति वीतिहरतीति। ते मयं तया नेव सम्भुञ्जाम न वीतिहराम। तवेवेतं, ब्राह्मण, होति; तवेवेतं, ब्राह्मण, होती”ति।

    Yo kho, brāhmaṇa, akkosantaṁ paccakkosati, rosentaṁ paṭiroseti, bhaṇḍantaṁ paṭibhaṇḍati, ayaṁ vuccati, brāhmaṇa, sambhuñjati vītiharatīti. Te mayaṁ tayā neva sambhuñjāma na vītiharāma. Tavevetaṁ, brāhmaṇa, hoti; tavevetaṁ, brāhmaṇa, hotī”ti.

    Someone who, when abused, harassed, and attacked, abuses, harasses, and attacks in return is said to eat the food and have a reaction to it. But we neither eat your food nor do we have a reaction to it. It still belongs to you, brahmin, it still belongs to you!”

    “भवन्तं खो गोतमं सराजिका परिसा एवं जानाति: ‘अरहं समणो गोतमोऽति। अथ च पन भवं गोतमो कुज्झती”ति।

    “Bhavantaṁ kho gotamaṁ sarājikā parisā evaṁ jānāti: ‘arahaṁ samaṇo gotamo’ti. Atha ca pana bhavaṁ gotamo kujjhatī”ti.

    “The king and his retinue believe that Master Gotama is a perfected one. And yet he still gets angry.”

    “अक्कोधस्स कुतो कोधो, दन्तस्स समजीविनो; सम्मदञ्ञा विमुत्तस्स, उपसन्तस्स तादिनो।

    “Akkodhassa kuto kodho, dantassa samajīvino; Sammadaññā vimuttassa, upasantassa tādino.

    “For one free of anger, tamed, living in balance, freed by right knowledge, a poised one who is at peace: where would anger come from?

    तस्सेव तेन पापियो, यो कुद्धं पटिकुज्झति; कुद्धं अप्पटिकुज्झन्तो, सङ्गामं जेति दुज्जयं।

    Tasseva tena pāpiyo, yo kuddhaṁ paṭikujjhati; Kuddhaṁ appaṭikujjhanto, saṅgāmaṁ jeti dujjayaṁ.

    When you get angry at an angry person you just make things worse for yourself. When you don’t get angry at an angry person you win a battle hard to win.

    उभिन्नमत्थं चरति, अत्तनो च परस्स च; परं सङ्कुपितं ञत्वा, यो सतो उपसम्मति।

    Ubhinnamatthaṁ carati, attano ca parassa ca; Paraṁ saṅkupitaṁ ñatvā, yo sato upasammati.

    When you know that the other is angry, you act for the good of both yourself and the other if you’re mindful and stay calm.

    उभिन्नं तिकिच्छन्तानं, अत्तनो च परस्स च; जना मञ्ञन्ति बालोति, ये धम्मस्स अकोविदा”ति।

    Ubhinnaṁ tikicchantānaṁ, attano ca parassa ca; Janā maññanti bāloti, ye dhammassa akovidā”ti.

    People unfamiliar with the teaching consider one who heals both oneself and the other to be a fool.”

    एवं वुत्ते, अक्कोसकभारद्वाजो ब्राह्मणो भगवन्तं एतदवोच: “अभिक्कन्तं, भो गोतम …पे… एसाहं भवन्तं गोतमं सरणं गच्छामि धम्मञ्च भिक्खुसङ्घञ्च। लभेय्याहं, भन्ते, भोतो गोतमस्स सन्तिके पब्बज्जं, लभेय्यं उपसम्पदन्”ति।

    Evaṁ vutte, akkosakabhāradvājo brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “abhikkantaṁ, bho gotama …pe… esāhaṁ bhavantaṁ gotamaṁ saraṇaṁ gacchāmi dhammañca bhikkhusaṅghañca. Labheyyāhaṁ, bhante, bhoto gotamassa santike pabbajjaṁ, labheyyaṁ upasampadan”ti.

    When he had spoken, Bhāradvāja the Rude said to the Buddha, “Excellent, Master Gotama! … I go for refuge to Master Gotama, to the teaching, and to the bhikkhu Saṅgha. Sir, may I receive the going forth, the ordination in the ascetic Gotama’s presence?”

    अलत्थ खो अक्कोसकभारद्वाजो ब्राह्मणो भगवतो सन्तिके पब्बज्जं, अलत्थ उपसम्पदं। अचिरूपसम्पन्नो खो पनायस्मा अक्कोसकभारद्वाजो एको वूपकट्ठो अप्पमत्तो आतापी पहितत्तो विहरन्तो नचिरस्सेव—यस्सत्थाय कुलपुत्ता सम्मदेव अगारस्मा अनगारियं पब्बजन्ति तदनुत्तरं—ब्रह्मचरियपरियोसानं दिट्ठेव धम्मे सयं अभिञ्ञा सच्छिकत्वा उपसम्पज्ज विहासि।

    Alattha kho akkosakabhāradvājo brāhmaṇo bhagavato santike pabbajjaṁ, alattha upasampadaṁ. Acirūpasampanno kho panāyasmā akkosakabhāradvājo eko vūpakaṭṭho appamatto ātāpī pahitatto viharanto nacirasseva—yassatthāya kulaputtā sammadeva agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajanti tadanuttaraṁ—brahmacariyapariyosānaṁ diṭṭheva dhamme sayaṁ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja vihāsi.

    And the brahmin Bhāradvāja the Rude received the going forth, the ordination in the Buddha’s presence. Not long after his ordination, Venerable Bhāradvāja the Rude, living alone, withdrawn, diligent, keen, and resolute, soon realized the supreme end of the spiritual path in this very life. He lived having achieved with his own insight the goal for which gentlemen rightly go forth from the lay life to homelessness.

    “खीणा जाति, वुसितं ब्रह्मचरियं, कतं करणीयं नापरं इत्थत्ताया”ति अब्भञ्ञासि। अञ्ञतरो च पनायस्मा भारद्वाजो अरहतं अहोसीति।

    “Khīṇā jāti, vusitaṁ brahmacariyaṁ, kataṁ karaṇīyaṁ nāparaṁ itthattāyā”ti abbhaññāsi. Aññataro ca panāyasmā bhāradvājo arahataṁ ahosīti.

    He understood: “Rebirth is ended; the spiritual journey has been completed; what had to be done has been done; there is no return to any state of existence.” And Venerable Bhāradvāja became one of the perfected.
