    Akusalarāsisutta

    A Heap of the Unskillful

    सावत्थिनिदानं।

    तत्र खो भगवा एतदवोच:

    Tatra kho bhagavā etadavoca:

    There the Buddha said:

    “‘अकुसलरासीऽति, भिक्खवे, वदमानो पञ्च नीवरणे सम्मा वदमानो वदेय्य। केवलो हायं, भिक्खवे, अकुसलरासि, यदिदं—पञ्च नीवरणा। कतमे पञ्च? कामच्छन्दनीवरणं, ब्यापादनीवरणं, थिनमिद्धनीवरणं, उद्धच्चकुक्कुच्चनीवरणं, विचिकिच्छानीवरणं। ‘अकुसलरासीऽति, भिक्खवे, वदमानो इमे पञ्च नीवरणे सम्मा वदमानो वदेय्य। केवलो हायं, भिक्खवे, अकुसलरासि, यदिदं—पञ्च नीवरणा।

    “‘akusalarāsī’ti, bhikkhave, vadamāno pañca nīvaraṇe sammā vadamāno vadeyya. Kevalo hāyaṁ, bhikkhave, akusalarāsi, yadidaṁ—pañca nīvaraṇā. Katame pañca? Kāmacchandanīvaraṇaṁ, byāpādanīvaraṇaṁ, thinamiddhanīvaraṇaṁ, uddhaccakukkuccanīvaraṇaṁ, vicikicchānīvaraṇaṁ. ‘Akusalarāsī’ti, bhikkhave, vadamāno ime pañca nīvaraṇe sammā vadamāno vadeyya. Kevalo hāyaṁ, bhikkhave, akusalarāsi, yadidaṁ—pañca nīvaraṇā.

    “Rightly speaking, bhikkhus, you’d call these five hindrances a ‘heap of the unskillful’. For these five hindrances are entirely a heap of the unskillful. What five? The hindrances of sensual desire, ill will, dullness and drowsiness, restlessness and remorse, and doubt. Rightly speaking, you’d call these five hindrances a ‘heap of the unskillful’. For these five hindrances are entirely a heap of the unskillful.

    ‘कुसलरासीऽति, भिक्खवे, वदमानो चत्तारो सतिपट्ठाने सम्मा वदमानो वदेय्य। केवलो हायं, भिक्खवे, कुसलरासि, यदिदं—चत्तारो सतिपट्ठाना। कतमे चत्तारो? इध, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु काये कायानुपस्सी विहरति आतापी सम्पजानो सतिमा, विनेय्य लोके अभिज्झादोमनस्सं; वेदनासु …पे… चित्ते …पे… धम्मेसु धम्मानुपस्सी विहरति आतापी सम्पजानो सतिमा, विनेय्य लोके अभिज्झादोमनस्सं। ‘कुसलरासीऽति, भिक्खवे, वदमानो इमे चत्तारो सतिपट्ठाने सम्मा वदमानो वदेय्य। केवलो हायं, भिक्खवे, कुसलरासि, यदिदं—चत्तारो सतिपट्ठाना”ति।

    ‘Kusalarāsī’ti, bhikkhave, vadamāno cattāro satipaṭṭhāne sammā vadamāno vadeyya. Kevalo hāyaṁ, bhikkhave, kusalarāsi, yadidaṁ—cattāro satipaṭṭhānā. Katame cattāro? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kāye kāyānupassī viharati ātāpī sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ; vedanāsu …pe… citte …pe… dhammesu dhammānupassī viharati ātāpī sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ. ‘Kusalarāsī’ti, bhikkhave, vadamāno ime cattāro satipaṭṭhāne sammā vadamāno vadeyya. Kevalo hāyaṁ, bhikkhave, kusalarāsi, yadidaṁ—cattāro satipaṭṭhānā”ti.

    Rightly speaking, you’d call these four kinds of mindfulness meditation a ‘heap of the skillful’. For these four kinds of mindfulness meditation are entirely a heap of the skillful. What four? It’s when a bhikkhu meditates by observing an aspect of the body—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world. They meditate observing an aspect of feelings … They meditate observing an aspect of the mind … They meditate observing an aspect of principles—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world. Rightly speaking, you’d call these four kinds of mindfulness meditation a ‘heap of the skillful’. For these four kinds of mindfulness meditation are entirely a heap of the skillful.”
