एवं मे सुतं—एकं समयं भगवा आळवियं विहरति आळवकस्स यक्खस्स भवने।
Evaṁ me sutaṁ—ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā āḷaviyaṁ viharati āḷavakassa yakkhassa bhavane.
So I have heard. At one time the Buddha was staying near Āḷavī in the haunt of the native spirit Āḷavaka.
अथ खो आळवको यक्खो येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवन्तं एतदवोच: “निक्खम, समणा”ति।
Atha kho āḷavako yakkho yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “nikkhama, samaṇā”ti.
Then the native spirit Āḷavaka went up to the Buddha, and said to him: “Get out, ascetic!”
“साधावुसो”ति भगवा निक्खमि।
“Sādhāvuso”ti bhagavā nikkhami.
Saying, “All right, sir,” the Buddha went out.
“पविस, समणा”ति।
“Pavisa, samaṇā”ti.
“Get in, ascetic!”
“साधावुसो”ति भगवा पाविसि।
“Sādhāvuso”ti bhagavā pāvisi.
Saying, “All right, sir,” the Buddha went in.
दुतियम्पि खो आळवको यक्खो भगवन्तं एतदवोच: “निक्खम, समणा”ति।
Dutiyampi kho āḷavako yakkho bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “nikkhama, samaṇā”ti.
And for a second time the native spirit Āḷavaka said to the Buddha, “Get out, ascetic!”
“साधावुसो”ति भगवा निक्खमि।
“Sādhāvuso”ti bhagavā nikkhami.
Saying, “All right, sir,” the Buddha went out.
“पविस, समणा”ति।
“Pavisa, samaṇā”ti.
“Get in, ascetic!”
“साधावुसो”ति भगवा पाविसि।
“Sādhāvuso”ti bhagavā pāvisi.
Saying, “All right, sir,” the Buddha went in.
ततियम्पि खो आळवको यक्खो भगवन्तं एतदवोच: “निक्खम, समणा”ति।
Tatiyampi kho āḷavako yakkho bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “nikkhama, samaṇā”ti.
And for a third time the native spirit Āḷavaka said to the Buddha, “Get out, ascetic!”
“साधावुसो”ति भगवा निक्खमि।
“Sādhāvuso”ti bhagavā nikkhami.
Saying, “All right, sir,” the Buddha went out.
“पविस, समणा”ति।
“Pavisa, samaṇā”ti.
“Get in, ascetic!”

Saying, “All right, sir,” the Buddha went in.
चतुत्थम्पि खो आळवको यक्खो भगवन्तं एतदवोच:
Catutthampi kho āḷavako yakkho bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
And for a fourth time the native spirit Āḷavaka said to the Buddha,
“निक्खम, समणा”ति।
“nikkhama, samaṇā”ti.
“Get out, ascetic!”
“न ख्वाहं तं, आवुसो, निक्खमिस्सामि। यं ते करणीयं तं करोही”ति।
“Na khvāhaṁ taṁ, āvuso, nikkhamissāmi. Yaṁ te karaṇīyaṁ taṁ karohī”ti.
“No, sir, I won’t get out. Do what you must.”
“पञ्हं तं, समण, पुच्छिस्सामि। सचे मे न ब्याकरिस्ससि, चित्तं वा ते खिपिस्सामि, हदयं वा ते फालेस्सामि, पादेसु वा गहेत्वा पारगङ्गाय खिपिस्सामी”ति।
“Pañhaṁ taṁ, samaṇa, pucchissāmi. Sace me na byākarissasi, cittaṁ vā te khipissāmi, hadayaṁ vā te phālessāmi, pādesu vā gahetvā pāragaṅgāya khipissāmī”ti.
“I will ask you a question, ascetic. If you don’t answer me, I’ll drive you insane, or explode your heart, or grab you by the feet and throw you to the far shore of the Ganges!”
“न ख्वाहं तं, आवुसो, पस्सामि सदेवके लोके समारके सब्रह्मके सस्समणब्राह्मणिया पजाय सदेवमनुस्साय, यो मे चित्तं वा खिपेय्य हदयं वा फालेय्य, पादेसु वा गहेत्वा पारगङ्गाय खिपेय्य। अपि च त्वं, आवुसो, पुच्छ यदा कङ्खसी”ति (…)।
“Na khvāhaṁ taṁ, āvuso, passāmi sadevake loke samārake sabrahmake sassamaṇabrāhmaṇiyā pajāya sadevamanussāya, yo me cittaṁ vā khipeyya hadayaṁ vā phāleyya, pādesu vā gahetvā pāragaṅgāya khipeyya. Api ca tvaṁ, āvuso, puccha yadā kaṅkhasī”ti (…).
“I don’t see anyone in this world with its gods, Māras, and Brahmās, this population with its ascetics and brahmins, its gods and humans who could do that to me. But anyway, ask what you wish.”
“किंसूध वित्तं पुरिसस्स सेट्ठं, किंसु सुचिण्णं सुखमावहाति; किंसु हवे सादुतरं रसानं, कथंजीविं जीवितमाहु सेट्ठन्”ति।
“Kiṁsūdha vittaṁ purisassa seṭṭhaṁ, Kiṁsu suciṇṇaṁ sukhamāvahāti; Kiṁsu have sādutaraṁ rasānaṁ, Kathaṁjīviṁ jīvitamāhu seṭṭhan”ti.
“What’s a person’s best wealth? What brings happiness when practiced well? What’s the sweetest taste of all? The one they say has the best life: how do they live?”
“सद्धीध वित्तं पुरिसस्स सेट्ठं, धम्मो सुचिण्णो सुखमावहाति; सच्चं हवे सादुतरं रसानं, पञ्ञाजीविं जीवितमाहु सेट्ठन्”ति।
“Saddhīdha vittaṁ purisassa seṭṭhaṁ, Dhammo suciṇṇo sukhamāvahāti; Saccaṁ have sādutaraṁ rasānaṁ, Paññājīviṁ jīvitamāhu seṭṭhan”ti.
“Faith here is a person’s best wealth. The teaching brings happiness when practiced well. Truth is the sweetest taste of all. The one they say has the best life lives by wisdom.”
“कथंसु तरति ओघं, कथंसु तरति अण्णवं; कथंसु दुक्खमच्चेति, कथंसु परिसुज्झती”ति।
“Kathaṁsu tarati oghaṁ, kathaṁsu tarati aṇṇavaṁ; Kathaṁsu dukkhamacceti, kathaṁsu parisujjhatī”ti.
“How do you cross the flood? How do you cross the deluge? How do you get over suffering? How do you get purified?”
“सद्धाय तरति ओघं, अप्पमादेन अण्णवं; वीरियेन दुक्खमच्चेति, पञ्ञाय परिसुज्झती”ति।
“Saddhāya tarati oghaṁ, appamādena aṇṇavaṁ; Vīriyena dukkhamacceti, paññāya parisujjhatī”ti.
“By faith you cross the flood, and by diligence the deluge. By energy you get past suffering, and you’re purified by wisdom.”
“कथंसु लभते पञ्ञं, कथंसु विन्दते धनं; कथंसु कित्तिं पप्पोति, कथं मित्तानि गन्थति; अस्मा लोका परं लोकं, कथं पेच्च न सोचती”ति।
“Kathaṁsu labhate paññaṁ, kathaṁsu vindate dhanaṁ; Kathaṁsu kittiṁ pappoti, kathaṁ mittāni ganthati; Asmā lokā paraṁ lokaṁ, kathaṁ pecca na socatī”ti.
“How do you get wisdom? How do you earn wealth? How do you get a good reputation? How do you hold on to friends? How do the departed not grieve when passing from this world to the next?”
“सद्दहानो अरहतं, धम्मं निब्बानपत्तिया; सुस्सूसं लभते पञ्ञं, अप्पमत्तो विचक्खणो।
“Saddahāno arahataṁ, dhammaṁ nibbānapattiyā; Sussūsaṁ1 labhate paññaṁ, appamatto vicakkhaṇo.
“One who is diligent and discerning gains wisdom by wanting to learn, having faith in the perfected ones, and the teaching for becoming extinguished.
पतिरूपकारी धुरवा, उट्ठाता विन्दते धनं; सच्चेन कित्तिं पप्पोति, ददं मित्तानि गन्थति; अस्मा लोका परं लोकं, एवं पेच्च न सोचति।
Patirūpakārī dhuravā, uṭṭhātā vindate dhanaṁ; Saccena kittiṁ pappoti, dadaṁ mittāni ganthati; Asmā lokā paraṁ lokaṁ, evaṁ pecca na socati.
Being responsible, acting appropriately, and working hard you earn wealth. Truthfulness wins you a good reputation. You hold on to friends by giving. That’s how the departed do not grieve when passing from this world to the next.
यस्सेते चतुरो धम्मा, सद्धस्स घरमेसिनो; सच्चं धम्मो धिति चागो, स वे पेच्च न सोचति।
Yassete caturo dhammā, saddhassa gharamesino; Saccaṁ dhammo dhiti cāgo, sa ve pecca na socati.
A faithful householder who has these four qualities does not grieve after passing away: truth, principle, steadfastness, and generosity.
इङ्घ अञ्ञेपि पुच्छस्सु, पुथू समणब्राह्मणे; यदि सच्चा धम्मा चागा, खन्त्या भिय्योध विज्जती”ति।
Iṅgha aññepi pucchassu, puthū samaṇabrāhmaṇe; Yadi saccā dhammā cāgā, khantyā bhiyyodha vijjatī”ti.
Go ahead, ask others as well, there are many ascetics and brahmins. See whether anything better is found than truth, self-control, generosity, and patience.”
“कथं नु दानि पुच्छेय्यं, पुथू समणब्राह्मणे; योहं अज्ज पजानामि, यो अत्थो सम्परायिको।
“Kathaṁ nu dāni puccheyyaṁ, puthū samaṇabrāhmaṇe; Yohaṁ2 ajja pajānāmi, yo attho samparāyiko.
“Why now would I question the many ascetics and brahmins? Today I understand what’s good for the next life.
अत्थाय वत मे बुद्धो, वासायाळविमागमा; योहं अज्ज पजानामि, यत्थ दिन्नं महप्फलं।
Atthāya vata me buddho, vāsāyāḷavimāgamā; Yohaṁ3 ajja pajānāmi, yattha dinnaṁ mahapphalaṁ.
It was truly for my benefit that the Buddha came to stay at Āḷavī. Today I understand where a gift is very fruitful.
सो अहं विचरिस्सामि, गामा गामं पुरा पुरं; नमस्समानो सम्बुद्धं, धम्मस्स च सुधम्मतन्”ति।
So ahaṁ vicarissāmi, Gāmā gāmaṁ purā puraṁ; Namassamāno sambuddhaṁ, Dhammassa ca sudhammatan”ti.
I myself will journey village to village, town to town, paying homage to the Buddha, and the natural excellence of the teaching!”
इन्दकवग्गो पठमो।

तस्सुद्दानं
Tassuddānaṁ
इन्दको सक्क सूचि च, मणिभद्दो च सानु च; पियङ्कर पुनब्बसु सुदत्तो च, द्वे सुक्का चीरआळवीति द्वादस।
Indako sakka sūci ca, Maṇibhaddo ca sānu ca; Piyaṅkara punabbasu sudatto ca, Dve sukkā cīraāḷavīti dvādasa.
यक्खसंयुत्तं समत्तं।
Yakkhasaṁyuttaṁ samattaṁ.
