सावत्थिनिदानं।
Sāvatthinidānaṁ.
At Sāvatthī.
तत्र खो आयस्मा आनन्दो भिक्खू आमन्तेसि: “आवुसो भिक्खवे”ति।
Tatra kho āyasmā ānando bhikkhū āmantesi: “āvuso bhikkhave”ti.
There Ānanda addressed the bhikkhus: “Friends, bhikkhus!”
“आवुसो”ति खो ते भिक्खू आयस्मतो आनन्दस्स पच्चस्सोसुं। आयस्मा आनन्दो एतदवोच:
“Āvuso”ti kho te bhikkhū āyasmato ānandassa paccassosuṁ. Āyasmā ānando etadavoca:
“Friend,” they replied. Ānanda said this:
“पुण्णो नाम, आवुसो, आयस्मा मन्ताणिपुत्तो अम्हाकं नवकानं सतं बहूपकारो होति। सो अम्हे इमिना ओवादेन ओवदति: ‘उपादाय, आवुसो आनन्द, अस्मीति होति, नो अनुपादाय। किञ्च उपादाय अस्मीति होति, नो अनुपादाय? रूपं उपादाय अस्मीति होति, नो अनुपादाय। वेदनं … सञ्ञं … सङ्खारे … विञ्ञाणं उपादाय अस्मीति होति, नो अनुपादाय।
“Puṇṇo nāma, āvuso, āyasmā mantāṇiputto1 amhākaṁ navakānaṁ sataṁ bahūpakāro hoti. So amhe iminā ovādena ovadati: ‘upādāya, āvuso ānanda, asmīti hoti, no anupādāya. Kiñca upādāya asmīti hoti, no anupādāya? Rūpaṁ upādāya asmīti hoti, no anupādāya. Vedanaṁ … saññaṁ … saṅkhāre … viññāṇaṁ upādāya asmīti hoti, no anupādāya.
“Friends, the venerable named Puṇṇa son of Mantāṇī was very helpful to me when I was just ordained. He gave me this advice: ‘Friend Ānanda, the notion “I am” occurs because of grasping, not by not grasping. Grasping what? The notion “I am” occurs because of grasping form, feeling, perception, choices, and consciousness, not by not grasping.
सेय्यथापि, आवुसो आनन्द, इत्थी वा पुरिसो वा दहरो युवा मण्डनकजातिको आदासे वा परिसुद्धे परियोदाते अच्छे वा उदकपत्ते सकं मुखनिमित्तं पच्चवेक्खमानो उपादाय पस्सेय्य, नो अनुपादाय; एवमेव खो, आवुसो आनन्द, रूपं उपादाय अस्मीति होति, नो अनुपादाय। वेदनं … सञ्ञं … सङ्खारे … विञ्ञाणं उपादाय अस्मीति होति, नो अनुपादाय।
Seyyathāpi, āvuso ānanda, itthī vā puriso vā daharo yuvā maṇḍanakajātiko ādāse vā parisuddhe pariyodāte acche vā udakapatte sakaṁ mukhanimittaṁ paccavekkhamāno upādāya passeyya, no anupādāya; evameva kho, āvuso ānanda, rūpaṁ upādāya asmīti hoti, no anupādāya. Vedanaṁ … saññaṁ … saṅkhāre … viññāṇaṁ upādāya asmīti hoti, no anupādāya.
Suppose there was a woman or man who was young, youthful, and fond of adornments, and they check their own reflection in a clean bright mirror or a clear bowl of water. They’d look because of grasping, not by not grasping. In the same way, the notion “I am” occurs because of grasping form, feeling, perception, choices, and consciousness, not by not grasping.
तं किं मञ्ञसि, आवुसो आनन्द, रूपं निच्चं वा अनिच्चं वाऽति?
Taṁ kiṁ maññasi, āvuso ānanda, rūpaṁ niccaṁ vā aniccaṁ vā’ti?
What do you think, Friend Ānanda? Is form permanent or impermanent?’
‘अनिच्चं, आवुसोऽ।
‘Aniccaṁ, āvuso’.
‘Impermanent, friend.’
‘वेदना … सञ्ञा … सङ्खारा … विञ्ञाणं निच्चं वा अनिच्चं वाऽति?
‘Vedanā … saññā … saṅkhārā … viññāṇaṁ niccaṁ vā aniccaṁ vā’ti?
‘Is feeling … perception … choices … consciousness permanent or impermanent?’
‘अनिच्चं, आवुसोऽ …पे…।
‘Aniccaṁ, āvuso’ …pe….
‘Impermanent, friend.’ …
तस्मातिह …पे… एवं पस्सं …पे… नापरं इत्थत्तायाति पजानातीति।
Tasmātiha …pe… evaṁ passaṁ …pe… nāparaṁ itthattāyāti pajānātīti.
‘So you should truly see … Seeing this … They understand: “… there is no return to any state of existence.”’
पुण्णो नाम, आवुसो, आयस्मा मन्ताणिपुत्तो अम्हाकं नवकानं सतं बहूपकारो होति। सो अम्हे इमिना ओवादेन ओवदति। इदञ्च पन मे आयस्मतो पुण्णस्स मन्ताणिपुत्तस्स धम्मदेसनं सुत्वा धम्मो अभिसमितो”ति।
Puṇṇo nāma, āvuso, āyasmā mantāṇiputto amhākaṁ navakānaṁ sataṁ bahūpakāro hoti. So amhe iminā ovādena ovadati. Idañca pana me āyasmato puṇṇassa mantāṇiputtassa dhammadesanaṁ sutvā dhammo abhisamito”ti.
Friends, the venerable named Puṇṇa son of Mantāṇī was very helpful to me when I was just ordained. He gave me this advice. And now that I’ve heard this teaching from Venerable Puṇṇa son of Mantāṇī, I’ve comprehended the teaching.”
