    Anattasutta

    Not-Self

    सावत्थिनिदानं।

    Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

    At Sāvatthī.

    एकमन्तं निसिन्नो खो आयस्मा राधो भगवन्तं एतदवोच:

    Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā rādho bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:

    Seated to one side, Venerable Rādha said to the Buddha:

    “‘अनत्ता, अनत्ताऽति, भन्ते, वुच्चति। कतमो नु खो, भन्ते, अनत्ता”ति?

    “‘anattā, anattā’ti, bhante, vuccati. Katamo nu kho, bhante, anattā”ti?

    “Sir, they speak of this thing called ‘not-self’. What is not-self?”

    “रूपं खो, राध, अनत्ता, वेदना अनत्ता, सञ्ञा अनत्ता, सङ्खारा अनत्ता, विञ्ञाणं अनत्ता।

    “Rūpaṁ kho, rādha, anattā, vedanā anattā, saññā anattā, saṅkhārā anattā, viññāṇaṁ anattā.

    “Rādha, form, feeling, perception, choices, and consciousness are not-self.

    एवं पस्सं …पे… नापरं इत्थत्तायाति पजानाती”ति।

    Evaṁ passaṁ …pe… nāparaṁ itthattāyāti pajānātī”ti.

    Seeing this … They understand: ‘… there is no return to any state of existence.’”

    सत्तमं।

    Sattamaṁ.
