    Andhakārasutta

    Darkness

    “अत्थि, भिक्खवे, लोकन्तरिका अघा असंवुता अन्धकारा अन्धकारतिमिसा, यत्थमिमेसं चन्दिमसूरियानं एवंमहिद्धिकानं एवं महानुभावानं आभाय नानुभोन्ती”ति।

    “Atthi, bhikkhave, lokantarikā aghā asaṁvutā andhakārā andhakāratimisā, yatthamimesaṁ candimasūriyānaṁ evaṁmahiddhikānaṁ evaṁ mahānubhāvānaṁ ābhāya nānubhontī”ti.

    “Bhikkhus, the boundless desolation of interstellar space is so utterly dark that even the light of the moon and the sun, so mighty and powerful, makes no impression.”

    एवं वुत्ते, अञ्ञतरो भिक्खु भगवन्तं एतदवोच: “महा वत सो, भन्ते, अन्धकारो, सुमहा वत सो, भन्ते, अन्धकारो। अत्थि नु खो, भन्ते, एतम्हा अन्धकारा अञ्ञो अन्धकारो महन्ततरो च भयानकतरो चा”ति?

    Evaṁ vutte, aññataro bhikkhu bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “mahā vata so, bhante, andhakāro, sumahā vata so, bhante, andhakāro. Atthi nu kho, bhante, etamhā andhakārā añño andhakāro mahantataro ca bhayānakataro cā”ti?

    When he said this, one of the bhikkhus asked the Buddha, “Sir, that darkness really is mighty, so very mighty. Is there any other darkness more mighty and terrifying than this one?”

    “अत्थि खो, भिक्खु, एतम्हा अन्धकारा अञ्ञो अन्धकारो महन्ततरो च भयानकतरो चा”ति।

    “Atthi kho, bhikkhu, etamhā andhakārā añño andhakāro mahantataro ca bhayānakataro cā”ti.

    “There is, bhikkhu.”

    “कतमो पन, भन्ते, एतम्हा अन्धकारा अञ्ञो अन्धकारो महन्ततरो च भयानकतरो चा”ति?

    “Katamo pana, bhante, etamhā andhakārā añño andhakāro mahantataro ca bhayānakataro cā”ti?

    “But sir, what is it?”

    “ये हि केचि, भिक्खु, समणा वा ब्राह्मणा वा ‘इदं दुक्खन्ऽति यथाभूतं नप्पजानन्ति …पे… ‘अयं दुक्खनिरोधगामिनी पटिपदाऽति यथाभूतं नप्पजानन्ति, ते जातिसंवत्तनिकेसु सङ्खारेसु अभिरमन्ति …पे… अभिरता …पे… अभिसङ्खरोन्ति …पे… अभिसङ्खरित्वा जातन्धकारम्पि पपतन्ति, जरन्धकारम्पि पपतन्ति, मरणन्धकारम्पि पपतन्ति, सोकपरिदेवदुक्खदोमनस्सुपायासन्धकारम्पि पपतन्ति। ते न परिमुच्चन्ति जातिया जराय मरणेन सोकेहि परिदेवेहि दुक्खेहि दोमनस्सेहि उपायासेहि। ‘न परिमुच्चन्ति दुक्खस्माऽति वदामि।

    “Ye hi keci, bhikkhu, samaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā ‘idaṁ dukkhan’ti yathābhūtaṁ nappajānanti …pe… ‘ayaṁ dukkhanirodhagāminī paṭipadā’ti yathābhūtaṁ nappajānanti, te jātisaṁvattanikesu saṅkhāresu abhiramanti …pe… abhiratā …pe… abhisaṅkharonti …pe… abhisaṅkharitvā jātandhakārampi papatanti, jarandhakārampi papatanti, maraṇandhakārampi papatanti, sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsandhakārampi papatanti. Te na parimuccanti jātiyā jarāya maraṇena sokehi paridevehi dukkhehi domanassehi upāyāsehi. ‘Na parimuccanti dukkhasmā’ti vadāmi.

    “There are ascetics and brahmins who don’t truly understand about suffering, its origin, its cessation, and the path. They take pleasure in choices that lead to rebirth … They continue to make such choices … Having made such choices, they fall into the darkness of rebirth, old age, and death, of sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress. They’re not freed from rebirth, old age, and death, from sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress. They’re not freed from suffering, I say.

    ये च खो केचि, भिक्खु, समणा वा ब्राह्मणा वा ‘इदं दुक्खन्ऽति यथाभूतं पजानन्ति …पे… ‘अयं दुक्खनिरोधगामिनी पटिपदाऽति यथाभूतं पजानन्ति, ते जातिसंवत्तनिकेसु सङ्खारेसु नाभिरमन्ति …पे… अनभिरता …पे… नाभिसङ्खरोन्ति …पे… अनभिसङ्खरित्वा जातन्धकारम्पि नप्पपतन्ति, जरन्धकारम्पि नप्पपतन्ति, मरणन्धकारम्पि नप्पपतन्ति, सोकपरिदेवदुक्खदोमनस्सुपायासन्धकारम्पि नप्पपतन्ति। ते परिमुच्चन्ति जातिया जराय मरणेन सोकेहि परिदेवेहि दुक्खेहि दोमनस्सेहि उपायासेहि। ‘परिमुच्चन्ति दुक्खस्माऽति वदामि।

Te parimuccanti jātiyā jarāya maraṇena sokehi paridevehi dukkhehi domanassehi upāyāsehi. ‘Parimuccanti dukkhasmā’ti vadāmi.

    There are ascetics and brahmins who truly understand about suffering, its origin, its cessation, and the path. They don’t take pleasure in choices that lead to rebirth … They stop making such choices … Having stopped making such choices, they don’t fall into the darkness of rebirth, old age, and death, of sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress.     तस्मातिह, भिक्खवे, ‘इदं दुक्खन्ऽति योगो करणीयो …पे… ‘अयं दुक्खनिरोधगामिनी पटिपदाऽति योगो करणीयो”ति।

    Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, ‘idaṁ dukkhan’ti yogo karaṇīyo …pe… ‘ayaṁ dukkhanirodhagāminī paṭipadā’ti yogo karaṇīyo”ti.

    That’s why you should practice meditation …”
