The Perception of Impermanence
सावत्थिनिदानं।

At Sāvatthī.
“अनिच्चसञ्ञा, भिक्खवे, भाविता बहुलीकता सब्बं कामरागं परियादियति, सब्बं रूपरागं परियादियति, सब्बं भवरागं परियादियति, सब्बं अविज्जं परियादियति, सब्बं अस्मिमानं समूहनति।
“Aniccasaññā, bhikkhave, bhāvitā bahulīkatā sabbaṁ kāmarāgaṁ pariyādiyati, sabbaṁ rūparāgaṁ pariyādiyati, sabbaṁ bhavarāgaṁ pariyādiyati, sabbaṁ avijjaṁ pariyādiyati, sabbaṁ asmimānaṁ samūhanati.
“Bhikkhus, when the perception of impermanence is developed and cultivated it eliminates all desire for sensual pleasures, for rebirth in the realm of luminous form, and for rebirth in a future life. It eliminates all ignorance and eradicates all conceit ‘I am’.
सेय्यथापि, भिक्खवे, सरदसमये कस्सको महानङ्गलेन कसन्तो सब्बानि मूलसन्तानकानि सम्पदालेन्तो कसति; एवमेव खो, भिक्खवे, अनिच्चसञ्ञा भाविता बहुलीकता सब्बं कामरागं परियादियति, सब्बं रूपरागं परियादियति, सब्बं भवरागं परियादियति, सब्बं अविज्जं परियादियति, सब्बं अस्मिमानं समूहनति।
Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, saradasamaye kassako mahānaṅgalena kasanto sabbāni mūlasantānakāni sampadālento kasati; evameva kho, bhikkhave, aniccasaññā bhāvitā bahulīkatā sabbaṁ kāmarāgaṁ pariyādiyati, sabbaṁ rūparāgaṁ pariyādiyati, sabbaṁ bhavarāgaṁ pariyādiyati, sabbaṁ avijjaṁ pariyādiyati, sabbaṁ asmimānaṁ samūhanati.
In the autumn, a farmer ploughing with a large plough shears through all the root networks. In the same way, when the perception of impermanence is developed … it eradicates all conceit ‘I am’.
सेय्यथापि, भिक्खवे, पब्बजलायको पब्बजं लायित्वा अग्गे गहेत्वा ओधुनाति निद्धुनाति निच्छोटेति; एवमेव खो, भिक्खवे, अनिच्चसञ्ञा भाविता बहुलीकता सब्बं कामरागं परियादियति …पे… सब्बं अस्मिमानं समूहनति।
Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, pabbajalāyako pabbajaṁ lāyitvā agge gahetvā odhunāti niddhunāti nicchoṭeti; evameva kho, bhikkhave, aniccasaññā bhāvitā bahulīkatā sabbaṁ kāmarāgaṁ pariyādiyati …pe… sabbaṁ asmimānaṁ samūhanati.
A reed-cutter, having cut the reeds, grabs them at the top and shakes them down, shakes them about, and shakes them off. In the same way, when the perception of impermanence is developed … it eradicates all conceit ‘I am’.
सेय्यथापि, भिक्खवे, अम्बपिण्डिया वण्टच्छिन्नाय यानि तत्थ अम्बानि वण्टपटिबन्धानि सब्बानि तानि तदन्वयानि भवन्ति; एवमेव खो, भिक्खवे, अनिच्चसञ्ञा भाविता …पे… सब्बं अस्मिमानं समूहनति।
Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, ambapiṇḍiyā vaṇṭacchinnāya yāni tattha ambāni vaṇṭapaṭibandhāni sabbāni tāni tadanvayāni bhavanti; evameva kho, bhikkhave, aniccasaññā bhāvitā …pe… sabbaṁ asmimānaṁ samūhanati.
When the stalk of a bunch of mangoes is cut, all the mangoes attached to the stalk will follow along. In the same way, when the perception of impermanence is developed … it eradicates all conceit ‘I am’.
सेय्यथापि, भिक्खवे, कूटागारस्स या काचि गोपानसियो सब्बा ता कूटङ्गमा कूटनिन्ना कूटसमोसरणा, कूटं तासं अग्गमक्खायति; एवमेव खो, भिक्खवे, अनिच्चसञ्ञा भाविता …पे… सब्बं अस्मिमानं समूहनति।
Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, kūṭāgārassa yā kāci gopānasiyo sabbā tā kūṭaṅgamā kūṭaninnā kūṭasamosaraṇā, kūṭaṁ tāsaṁ aggamakkhāyati; evameva kho, bhikkhave, aniccasaññā bhāvitā …pe… sabbaṁ asmimānaṁ samūhanati.
The rafters of a bungalow all lean to the peak, slope to the peak, and meet at the peak, so the peak is said to be the topmost of them all. In the same way, when the perception of impermanence is developed … it eradicates all conceit ‘I am’.
सेय्यथापि, भिक्खवे, ये केचि मूलगन्धा काळानुसारिगन्धो तेसं अग्गमक्खायति; एवमेव खो, भिक्खवे, अनिच्चसञ्ञा …पे… सब्बं अस्मिमानं समूहनति।
Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, ye keci mūlagandhā kāḷānusārigandho tesaṁ aggamakkhāyati; evameva kho, bhikkhave, aniccasaññā …pe… sabbaṁ asmimānaṁ samūhanati.
Of all kinds of fragrant root, spikenard is said to be the best. In the same way, when the perception of impermanence is developed … it eradicates all conceit ‘I am’.
सेय्यथापि, भिक्खवे, ये केचि सारगन्धा, लोहितचन्दनं तेसं अग्गमक्खायति; एवमेव खो, भिक्खवे, अनिच्चसञ्ञा …पे… सब्बं अस्मिमानं समूहनति।
Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, ye keci sāragandhā, lohitacandanaṁ tesaṁ aggamakkhāyati; evameva kho, bhikkhave, aniccasaññā …pe… sabbaṁ asmimānaṁ samūhanati.
Of all kinds of fragrant heartwood, red sandalwood is said to be the best. In the same way, when the perception of impermanence is developed … it eradicates all conceit ‘I am’.
सेय्यथापि, भिक्खवे, ये केचि पुप्फगन्धा, वस्सिकं तेसं अग्गमक्खायति; एवमेव खो, भिक्खवे, अनिच्चसञ्ञा …पे… सब्बं अस्मिमानं समूहनति।
Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, ye keci pupphagandhā, vassikaṁ tesaṁ aggamakkhāyati; evameva kho, bhikkhave, aniccasaññā …pe… sabbaṁ asmimānaṁ samūhanati.
Of all kinds of fragrant flower, jasmine is said to be the best. In the same way, when the perception of impermanence is developed … it eradicates all conceit ‘I am’.
सेय्यथापि, भिक्खवे, ये केचि कुट्टराजानो, सब्बेते रञ्ञो चक्कवत्तिस्स अनुयन्ता भवन्ति, राजा तेसं चक्कवत्ति अग्गमक्खायति; एवमेव खो, भिक्खवे, अनिच्चसञ्ञा …पे… सब्बं अस्मिमानं समूहनति।
Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, ye keci kuṭṭarājāno, sabbete rañño cakkavattissa anuyantā bhavanti, rājā tesaṁ cakkavatti aggamakkhāyati; evameva kho, bhikkhave, aniccasaññā …pe… sabbaṁ asmimānaṁ samūhanati.
All lesser kings are vassals of a wheel-turning monarch, so the wheel-turning monarch is said to be the foremost of them all. In the same way, when the perception of impermanence is developed … it eradicates all conceit ‘I am’.
सेय्यथापि, भिक्खवे, या काचि तारकरूपानं पभा, सब्बा ता चन्दिमप्पभाय कलं नाग्घन्ति सोळसिं, चन्दप्पभा तासं अग्गमक्खायति; एवमेव खो, भिक्खवे, अनिच्चसञ्ञा …पे… सब्बं अस्मिमानं समूहनति।
Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, yā kāci tārakarūpānaṁ pabhā, sabbā tā candimappabhāya kalaṁ nāgghanti soḷasiṁ, candappabhā tāsaṁ aggamakkhāyati; evameva kho, bhikkhave, aniccasaññā …pe… sabbaṁ asmimānaṁ samūhanati.
The radiance of all the stars is not worth a sixteenth part of the moon’s radiance, so the moon’s radiance is said to be the best of them all. In the same way, when the perception of impermanence is developed … it eradicates all conceit ‘I am’.
सेय्यथापि, भिक्खवे, सरदसमये विद्धे विगतवलाहके देवे आदिच्चो नतं अब्भुस्सक्कमानो, सब्बं आकासगतं तमगतं अभिविहच्च भासते च तपते च विरोचते च; एवमेव खो, भिक्खवे, अनिच्चसञ्ञा भाविता बहुलीकता सब्बं कामरागं परियादियति, सब्बं रूपरागं परियादियति, सब्बं भवरागं परियादियति, सब्बं अविज्जं परियादियति, सब्बं अस्मिमानं समूहनति।
Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, saradasamaye viddhe vigatavalāhake deve ādicco nataṁ abbhussakkamāno, sabbaṁ ākāsagataṁ tamagataṁ abhivihacca bhāsate ca tapate ca virocate ca; evameva kho, bhikkhave, aniccasaññā bhāvitā bahulīkatā sabbaṁ kāmarāgaṁ pariyādiyati, sabbaṁ rūparāgaṁ pariyādiyati, sabbaṁ bhavarāgaṁ pariyādiyati, sabbaṁ avijjaṁ pariyādiyati, sabbaṁ asmimānaṁ samūhanati.
After the rainy season the sky is clear and cloudless. And when the sun rises, it dispels all the darkness from the sky as it shines and glows and radiates. In the same way, when the perception of impermanence is developed and cultivated it eliminates all desire for sensual pleasures, for rebirth in the realm of luminous form, and for rebirth in a future life. It eliminates all ignorance and eradicates all conceit ‘I am’.
कथं भाविता च, भिक्खवे, अनिच्चसञ्ञा कथं बहुलीकता सब्बं कामरागं परियादियति …पे… सब्बं अस्मिमानं समूहनति? ‘इति रूपं, इति रूपस्स समुदयो, इति रूपस्स अत्थङ्गमो; इति वेदना … इति सञ्ञा … इति सङ्खारा … इति विञ्ञाणं, इति विञ्ञाणस्स समुदयो, इति विञ्ञाणस्स अत्थङ्गमोऽति—
Kathaṁ bhāvitā ca, bhikkhave, aniccasaññā kathaṁ bahulīkatā sabbaṁ kāmarāgaṁ pariyādiyati …pe… sabbaṁ asmimānaṁ samūhanati? ‘Iti rūpaṁ, iti rūpassa samudayo, iti rūpassa atthaṅgamo; iti vedanā … iti saññā … iti saṅkhārā … iti viññāṇaṁ, iti viññāṇassa samudayo, iti viññāṇassa atthaṅgamo’ti—
And how is the perception of impermanence developed and cultivated so that … it eradicates all conceit ‘I am’? ‘Such is form, such is the origin of form, such is the ending of form. Such is feeling … Such is perception … Such are choices … Such is consciousness, such is the origin of consciousness, such is the ending of consciousness.’
एवं भाविता खो, भिक्खवे, अनिच्चसञ्ञा एवं बहुलीकता सब्बं कामरागं परियादियति, सब्बं रूपरागं परियादियति, सब्बं भवरागं परियादियति, सब्बं अविज्जं परियादियति, सब्बं अस्मिमानं समूहनती”ति।
evaṁ bhāvitā kho, bhikkhave, aniccasaññā evaṁ bahulīkatā sabbaṁ kāmarāgaṁ pariyādiyati, sabbaṁ rūparāgaṁ pariyādiyati, sabbaṁ bhavarāgaṁ pariyādiyati, sabbaṁ avijjaṁ pariyādiyati, sabbaṁ asmimānaṁ samūhanatī”ti.
That’s how the perception of impermanence is developed and cultivated so that it eliminates all desire for sensual pleasures, for rebirth in the realm of luminous form, and for rebirth in a future life. That’s how it eliminates all ignorance and eradicates all conceit ‘I am’.”

पुप्फवग्गो पञ्चमो।

तस्सुद्दानं
Tassuddānaṁ
नदी पुप्फञ्च फेणञ्च, गोमयञ्च नखासिखं; सुद्धिकं द्वे च गद्दुला, वासीजटं अनिच्चताति।
Nadī pupphañca pheṇañca, gomayañca nakhāsikhaṁ; Suddhikaṁ dve ca gaddulā, vāsījaṭaṁ aniccatāti.
मज्झिमपण्णासको समत्तो।
Majjhimapaṇṇāsako samatto.
तस्स मज्झिमपण्णासकस्स वग्गुद्दानं
Tassa majjhimapaṇṇāsakassa vagguddānaṁ
उपयो अरहन्तो च, खज्जनी थेरसव्हयं; पुप्फवग्गेन पण्णास, दुतियो तेन वुच्चतीति।
Upayo arahanto ca, khajjanī therasavhayaṁ; Pupphavaggena paṇṇāsa, dutiyo tena vuccatīti.
