    The Drum Peg

    सावत्थियं विहरति।

    Sāvatthiyaṁ viharati.

    “भूतपुब्बं, भिक्खवे, दसारहानं आनको नाम मुदिङ्गो अहोसि। तस्स दसारहा आनके घटिते अञ्ञं आणिं ओदहिंसु। अहु खो सो, भिक्खवे, समयो यं आनकस्स मुदिङ्गस्स पोराणं पोक्खरफलकं अन्तरधायि। आणिसङ्घाटोव अवसिस्सि।

    “Bhūtapubbaṁ, bhikkhave, dasārahānaṁ ānako nāma mudiṅgo ahosi. Tassa dasārahā ānake ghaṭite aññaṁ āṇiṁ odahiṁsu. Ahu kho so, bhikkhave, samayo yaṁ ānakassa mudiṅgassa porāṇaṁ pokkharaphalakaṁ antaradhāyi. Āṇisaṅghāṭova avasissi.

    “Once upon a time, bhikkhus, the Dasārahas had a clay drum called the Commander. Each time the Commander split they repaired it by inserting another peg. But there came a time when the clay drum Commander’s original wooden rim disappeared and only a mass of pegs remained.

    एवमेव खो, भिक्खवे, भविस्सन्ति भिक्खू अनागतमद्धानं, ये ते सुत्तन्ता तथागतभासिता गम्भीरा गम्भीरत्था लोकुत्तरा सुञ्ञतप्पटिसंयुत्ता, तेसु भञ्ञमानेसु न सुस्सूसिस्सन्ति न सोतं ओदहिस्सन्ति न अञ्ञा चित्तं उपट्ठापेस्सन्ति न च ते धम्मे उग्गहेतब्बं परियापुणितब्बं मञ्ञिस्सन्ति।

    Evameva kho, bhikkhave, bhavissanti bhikkhū anāgatamaddhānaṁ, ye te suttantā tathāgatabhāsitā gambhīrā gambhīratthā lokuttarā suññatappaṭisaṁyuttā, tesu bhaññamānesu na sussūsissanti na sotaṁ odahissanti na aññā cittaṁ upaṭṭhāpessanti na ca te dhamme uggahetabbaṁ pariyāpuṇitabbaṁ maññissanti.

    In the same way, in a future time there will be bhikkhus who won’t want to listen when discourses spoken by the Realized One—deep, profound, transcendent, dealing with emptiness—are being recited. They won’t actively listen or try to understand, nor will they think those teachings are worth learning and memorizing.

    ये पन ते सुत्तन्ता कविकता कावेय्या चित्तक्खरा चित्तब्यञ्जना बाहिरका सावकभासिता, तेसु भञ्ञमानेसु सुस्सूसिस्सन्ति, सोतं ओदहिस्सन्ति, अञ्ञा चित्तं उपट्ठापेस्सन्ति, ते च धम्मे उग्गहेतब्बं परियापुणितब्बं मञ्ञिस्सन्ति। एवमेतेसं, भिक्खवे, सुत्तन्तानं तथागतभासितानं गम्भीरानं गम्भीरत्थानं लोकुत्तरानं सुञ्ञतप्पटिसंयुत्तानं अन्तरधानं भविस्सति।

    Ye pana te suttantā kavikatā kāveyyā cittakkharā cittabyañjanā bāhirakā sāvakabhāsitā, tesu bhaññamānesu sussūsissanti, sotaṁ odahissanti, aññā cittaṁ upaṭṭhāpessanti, te ca dhamme uggahetabbaṁ pariyāpuṇitabbaṁ maññissanti. Evametesaṁ, bhikkhave, suttantānaṁ tathāgatabhāsitānaṁ gambhīrānaṁ gambhīratthānaṁ lokuttarānaṁ suññatappaṭisaṁyuttānaṁ antaradhānaṁ bhavissati.

    But when discourses composed by poets—poetry, with fancy words and phrases, composed by outsiders or spoken by disciples—are being recited they will want to listen. They’ll actively listen and try to understand, and they’ll think those teachings are worth learning and memorizing. And that is how the discourses spoken by the Realized One—deep, profound, transcendent, dealing with emptiness—will disappear.

    तस्मातिह, भिक्खवे, एवं सिक्खितब्बं: ‘ये ते सुत्तन्ता तथागतभासिता गम्भीरा गम्भीरत्था लोकुत्तरा सुञ्ञतप्पटिसंयुत्ता, तेसु भञ्ञमानेसु सुस्सूसिस्साम, सोतं ओदहिस्साम, अञ्ञा चित्तं उपट्ठापेस्साम, ते च धम्मे उग्गहेतब्बं परियापुणितब्बं मञ्ञिस्सामाऽति। एवञ्हि वो, भिक्खवे, सिक्खितब्बन्”ति।

    Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, evaṁ sikkhitabbaṁ: ‘ye te suttantā tathāgatabhāsitā gambhīrā gambhīratthā lokuttarā suññatappaṭisaṁyuttā, tesu bhaññamānesu sussūsissāma, sotaṁ odahissāma, aññā cittaṁ upaṭṭhāpessāma, te ca dhamme uggahetabbaṁ pariyāpuṇitabbaṁ maññissāmā’ti. Evañhi vo, bhikkhave, sikkhitabban”ti.

    So you should train like this: ‘When discourses spoken by the Realized One—deep, profound, transcendent, dealing with emptiness—are being recited we will want to listen. We will actively listen and trying to understand, and we will think those teachings are worth learning and memorizing.’ That’s how you should train.”

    सत्तमं।
