“चत्तारोमे, भिक्खवे, सतिपट्ठाना। कतमे चत्तारो? इध, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु काये कायानुपस्सी विहरति आतापी सम्पजानो सतिमा, विनेय्य लोके अभिज्झादोमनस्सं; वेदनासु …पे… चित्ते …पे… धम्मेसु धम्मानुपस्सी विहरति आतापी सम्पजानो सतिमा, विनेय्य लोके अभिज्झादोमनस्सं। इमे खो, भिक्खवे, चत्तारो सतिपट्ठाना।
“Cattārome, bhikkhave, satipaṭṭhānā. Katame cattāro? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kāye kāyānupassī viharati ātāpī sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ; vedanāsu …pe… citte …pe… dhammesu dhammānupassī viharati ātāpī sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ. Ime kho, bhikkhave, cattāro satipaṭṭhānā.
“Bhikkhus, there are these four kinds of mindfulness meditation. What four? It’s when a bhikkhu meditates by observing an aspect of the body—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world. They meditate observing an aspect of feelings … mind … principles—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world. These are the four kinds of mindfulness meditation.
इमेसं खो, भिक्खवे, चतुन्नं सतिपट्ठानानं भावितत्ता बहुलीकतत्ता द्विन्नं फलानं अञ्ञतरं फलं पाटिकङ्खं—दिट्ठेव धम्मे अञ्ञा, सति वा उपादिसेसे अनागामिता”ति।
Imesaṁ kho, bhikkhave, catunnaṁ satipaṭṭhānānaṁ bhāvitattā bahulīkatattā dvinnaṁ phalānaṁ aññataraṁ phalaṁ pāṭikaṅkhaṁ—diṭṭheva dhamme aññā, sati vā upādisese anāgāmitā”ti.
Because of developing and cultivating these four kinds of mindfulness meditation, one of two results can be expected: enlightenment in the present life, or if there’s something left over, non-return.”
