    अथ खो भगवा परित्तं नखसिखायं पंसुं आरोपेत्वा भिक्खू आमन्तेसि: “तं किं मञ्ञथ, भिक्खवे, कतमं नु खो बहुतरं—यो वायं मया परित्तो नखसिखायं पंसु आरोपितो, अयं वा महापथवी”ति?

    Atha kho bhagavā parittaṁ nakhasikhāyaṁ paṁsuṁ āropetvā bhikkhū āmantesi: “Taṁ kiṁ maññatha, bhikkhave, katamaṁ nu kho bahutaraṁ—yo vāyaṁ mayā paritto nakhasikhāyaṁ paṁsu āropito, ayaṁ vā mahāpathavī”ti?

    Then the Buddha, picking up a little bit of dirt under his fingernail, addressed the bhikkhus: “What do you think, bhikkhus? Which is more: the little bit of dirt under my fingernail, or this great earth?”

    “एतदेव, भन्ते, बहुतरं, यदिदं—महापथवी; अप्पमत्तकायं भगवता परित्तो नखसिखायं पंसु आरोपितो। सङ्खम्पि न उपेति, उपनिधम्पि न उपेति, कलभागम्पि न उपेति महापथविं उपनिधाय भगवता परित्तो नखसिखायं पंसु आरोपितो”ति।

    “Etadeva, bhante, bahutaraṁ, yadidaṁ—mahāpathavī; appamattakāyaṁ bhagavatā paritto nakhasikhāyaṁ paṁsu āropito. Saṅkhampi na upeti, upanidhampi na upeti, kalabhāgampi na upeti mahāpathaviṁ upanidhāya bhagavatā paritto nakhasikhāyaṁ paṁsu āropito”ti.

    “Sir, the great earth is certainly more. The little bit of dirt under your fingernail is tiny. Compared to the great earth, it doesn’t count, there’s no comparison, it’s not worth a fraction.”

    “एवमेव खो, भिक्खवे, अप्पमत्तका ते सत्ता ये मनुस्सेसु पच्चाजायन्ति; अथ खो एतेव बहुतरा सत्ता ये अञ्ञत्र मनुस्सेहि पच्चाजायन्ति। तं किस्स हेतु? अदिट्ठत्ता, भिक्खवे, चतुन्नं अरियसच्चानं। कतमेसं चतुन्नं? दुक्खस्स अरियसच्चस्स …पे… दुक्खनिरोधगामिनिया पटिपदाय अरियसच्चस्स।

    “Evameva kho, bhikkhave, appamattakā te sattā ye manussesu paccājāyanti; atha kho eteva bahutarā sattā ye aññatra manussehi1 paccājāyanti. Taṁ kissa hetu? Adiṭṭhattā, bhikkhave, catunnaṁ ariyasaccānaṁ. Katamesaṁ catunnaṁ? Dukkhassa ariyasaccassa …pe… dukkhanirodhagāminiyā paṭipadāya ariyasaccassa.

    “In the same way, the sentient beings reborn as humans are few, while those not reborn as humans are many. Why is that? It’s because they haven’t seen the four noble truths. What four? The noble truths of suffering, its origin, its cessation, and the path.

    तस्मातिह, भिक्खवे, ‘इदं दुक्खन्ऽति योगो करणीयो …पे… ‘अयं दुक्खनिरोधगामिनी पटिपदाऽति योगो करणीयो”ति।

    Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, ‘idaṁ dukkhan’ti yogo karaṇīyo …pe… ‘ayaṁ dukkhanirodhagāminī paṭipadā’ti yogo karaṇīyo”ti.

    That’s why you should practice meditation …”
