“चत्तारोमे, भिक्खवे, अन्ता। कतमे चत्तारो? सक्कायन्तो, सक्कायसमुदयन्तो, सक्कायनिरोधन्तो, सक्कायनिरोधगामिनिप्पटिपदन्तो। कतमो च, भिक्खवे, सक्कायन्तो? पञ्चुपादानक्खन्धातिस्स वचनीयं। कतमे पञ्च? सेय्यथिदं—रूपुपादानक्खन्धो, वेदनुपादानक्खन्धो, सञ्ञुपादानक्खन्धो, सङ्खारुपादानक्खन्धो, विञ्ञाणुपादानक्खन्धो—अयं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, सक्कायन्तो।
“Cattārome, bhikkhave, antā. Katame cattāro? Sakkāyanto, sakkāyasamudayanto, sakkāyanirodhanto, sakkāyanirodhagāminippaṭipadanto. Katamo ca, bhikkhave, sakkāyanto? Pañcupādānakkhandhātissa vacanīyaṁ. Katame pañca? Seyyathidaṁ—rūpupādānakkhandho, vedanupādānakkhandho, saññupādānakkhandho, saṅkhārupādānakkhandho, viññāṇupādānakkhandho—ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, sakkāyanto.
“Bhikkhus, there are these four sides. What four? The side of identity, the side of the origin of identity, the side of the cessation of identity, and the side of the practice that leads to the cessation of identity. And what is the side of identity? It should be said: the five grasping aggregates. What five? That is, the grasping aggregates of form, feeling, perception, choices, and consciousness. This is called the side of identity.
कतमो च, भिक्खवे, सक्कायसमुदयन्तो? यायं तण्हा पोनोभविका नन्दिरागसहगता तत्रतत्राभिनन्दिनी, सेय्यथिदं—कामतण्हा, भवतण्हा, विभवतण्हा। अयं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, सक्कायसमुदयन्तो।
Katamo ca, bhikkhave, sakkāyasamudayanto? Yāyaṁ taṇhā ponobhavikā nandirāgasahagatā tatratatrābhinandinī, seyyathidaṁ—kāmataṇhā, bhavataṇhā, vibhavataṇhā. Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, sakkāyasamudayanto.
And what is the side of the origin of identity? It’s the craving that leads to future lives, mixed up with relishing and greed, taking pleasure wherever it lands. That is, craving for sensual pleasures, craving to continue existence, and craving to end existence. This is called the side of the origin of identity.
कतमो च, भिक्खवे, सक्कायनिरोधन्तो? यो तस्सायेव तण्हाय असेसविरागनिरोधो चागो पटिनिस्सग्गो मुत्ति अनालयो—अयं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, सक्कायनिरोधन्तो।
Katamo ca, bhikkhave, sakkāyanirodhanto? Yo tassāyeva taṇhāya asesavirāganirodho cāgo paṭinissaggo mutti anālayo—ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, sakkāyanirodhanto.
And what is the side of the cessation of identity? It’s the fading away and cessation of that very same craving with nothing left over; giving it away, letting it go, releasing it, and not clinging to it. This is called the side of the cessation of identity.
कतमो च, भिक्खवे, सक्कायनिरोधगामिनिप्पटिपदन्तो? अयमेव अरियो अट्ठङ्गिको मग्गो। सेय्यथिदं—सम्मादिट्ठि …पे… सम्मासमाधि। अयं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, सक्कायनिरोधगामिनिप्पटिपदन्तो। इमे खो, भिक्खवे, चत्तारो अन्ता”ति।
Katamo ca, bhikkhave, sakkāyanirodhagāminippaṭipadanto? Ayameva ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo. Seyyathidaṁ—sammādiṭṭhi …pe… sammāsamādhi. Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, sakkāyanirodhagāminippaṭipadanto. Ime kho, bhikkhave, cattāro antā”ti.
And what is the side of the practice that leads to the cessation of identity? It is simply this noble eightfold path, that is: right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion. This is called the side of the practice that leads to the cessation of identity. These are the four sides.”
