    Arahantasutta

    A Perfected One

    “यो होति भिक्खु अरहं कतावी, खीणासवो अन्तिमदेहधारी; अहं वदामीतिपि सो वदेय्य, ममं वदन्तीतिपि सो वदेय्या”ति।

    “Yo hoti bhikkhu arahaṁ katāvī, Khīṇāsavo antimadehadhārī; Ahaṁ vadāmītipi so vadeyya, Mamaṁ vadantītipi so vadeyyā”ti.

    “When a bhikkhu is perfected, proficient, with defilements ended, bearing the final body: would they say, ‘I speak’, or even ‘they speak to me’?”

    “यो होति भिक्खु अरहं कतावी, खीणासवो अन्तिमदेहधारी; अहं वदामीतिपि सो वदेय्य, ममं वदन्तीतिपि सो वदेय्य; लोके समञ्ञं कुसलो विदित्वा, वोहारमत्तेन सो वोहरेय्या”ति।

    “Yo hoti bhikkhu arahaṁ katāvī, Khīṇāsavo antimadehadhārī; Ahaṁ vadāmītipi so vadeyya, Mamaṁ vadantītipi so vadeyya; Loke samaññaṁ kusalo viditvā, Vohāramattena so1 vohareyyā”ti.

    “When a bhikkhu is perfected, proficient, with defilements ended, bearing the final body: they would say, ‘I speak’, and also ‘they speak to me’. Skillful, understanding the world’s conventions, they’d use these terms as no more than expressions.”

    “यो होति भिक्खु अरहं कतावी, खीणासवो अन्तिमदेहधारी; मानं नु खो सो उपगम्म भिक्खु, अहं वदामीतिपि सो वदेय्य; ममं वदन्तीतिपि सो वदेय्या”ति।

    “Yo hoti bhikkhu arahaṁ katāvī, Khīṇāsavo antimadehadhārī; Mānaṁ nu kho so upagamma bhikkhu, Ahaṁ vadāmītipi so vadeyya; Mamaṁ vadantītipi so vadeyyā”ti.

    “When a bhikkhu is perfected, proficient, with defilements ended, bearing the final body: is such a bhikkhu drawing close to conceit if they’d say, ‘I speak’, or even ‘they speak to me’?”

    “पहीनमानस्स न सन्ति गन्था, विधूपिता मानगन्थस्स सब्बे; स वीतिवत्तो मञ्ञतं सुमेधो, अहं वदामीतिपि सो वदेय्य।

    “Pahīnamānassa na santi ganthā, Vidhūpitā mānaganthassa sabbe; Sa vītivatto maññataṁ2 sumedho, Ahaṁ vadāmītipi so vadeyya.

    “Someone who has given up conceit has no ties, the ties of conceit are all dissipated. Though that clever person has transcended identity, they’d still say, ‘I speak’,

    ममं वदन्तीतिपि सो वदेय्य, लोके समञ्ञं कुसलो विदित्वा; वोहारमत्तेन सो वोहरेय्या”ति।

    Mamaṁ vadantītipi so vadeyya, Loke samaññaṁ kusalo viditvā; Vohāramattena so vohareyyā”ti.

    and also ‘they speak to me’. Skillful, understanding the world’s conventions, they’d use these terms as no more than expressions.”
