The Perfected Ones
सावत्थिनिदानं।
Sāvatthinidānaṁ.
At Sāvatthī.
“रूपं, भिक्खवे, अनिच्चं। यदनिच्चं तं दुक्खं; यं दुक्खं तदनत्ता; यदनत्ता तं ‘नेतं मम, नेसोहमस्मि, न मेसो अत्ताऽति एवमेतं यथाभूतं सम्मप्पञ्ञाय दट्ठब्बं।
“Rūpaṁ, bhikkhave, aniccaṁ. Yadaniccaṁ taṁ dukkhaṁ; yaṁ dukkhaṁ tadanattā; yadanattā taṁ ‘netaṁ mama, nesohamasmi, na meso attā’ti evametaṁ yathābhūtaṁ sammappaññāya daṭṭhabbaṁ.
“Bhikkhus, form is impermanent. What’s impermanent is suffering. What’s suffering is not-self. And what’s not-self should be truly seen with right understanding like this: ‘This is not mine, I am not this, this is not my self.’

विञ्ञाणं अनिच्चं। यदनिच्चं तं दुक्खं; यं दुक्खं तदनत्ता; यदनत्ता तं ‘नेतं मम, नेसोहमस्मि, न मेसो अत्ताऽति एवमेतं यथाभूतं सम्मप्पञ्ञाय दट्ठब्बं।
viññāṇaṁ aniccaṁ. Yadaniccaṁ taṁ dukkhaṁ; yaṁ dukkhaṁ tadanattā; yadanattā taṁ ‘netaṁ mama, nesohamasmi, na meso attā’ti evametaṁ yathābhūtaṁ sammappaññāya daṭṭhabbaṁ.
Consciousness is impermanent. What’s impermanent is suffering. What’s suffering is not-self. And what’s not-self should be truly seen with right understanding like this: ‘This is not mine, I am not this, this is not my self.’
एवं पस्सं, भिक्खवे, सुतवा अरियसावको रूपस्मिम्पि निब्बिन्दति, वेदनायपि … सञ्ञायपि … सङ्खारेसुपि … विञ्ञाणस्मिम्पि निब्बिन्दति। निब्बिन्दं विरज्जति; विरागा विमुच्चति। विमुत्तस्मिं विमुत्तमिति ञाणं होति।
Evaṁ passaṁ, bhikkhave, sutavā ariyasāvako rūpasmimpi nibbindati, vedanāyapi … saññāyapi … saṅkhāresupi … viññāṇasmimpi nibbindati. Nibbindaṁ virajjati; virāgā vimuccati. Vimuttasmiṁ vimuttamiti ñāṇaṁ hoti.
Seeing this, a learned noble disciple grows disillusioned with form, feeling, perception, choices, and consciousness. Being disillusioned, desire fades away. When desire fades away they’re freed. When they’re freed, they know they’re freed.
‘खीणा जाति, वुसितं ब्रह्मचरियं, कतं करणीयं, नापरं इत्थत्तायाऽति पजानाति। यावता, भिक्खवे, सत्तावासा, यावता भवग्गं, एते अग्गा, एते सेट्ठा लोकस्मिं यदिदं अरहन्तो”ति।
‘Khīṇā jāti, vusitaṁ brahmacariyaṁ, kataṁ karaṇīyaṁ, nāparaṁ itthattāyā’ti pajānāti. Yāvatā, bhikkhave, sattāvāsā, yāvatā bhavaggaṁ, ete aggā, ete seṭṭhā lokasmiṁ yadidaṁ arahanto”ti.
They understand: ‘Rebirth is ended, the spiritual journey has been completed, what had to be done has been done, there is no return to any state of existence.’ As far as there are abodes of sentient beings, even up until the pinnacle of existence, the perfected ones are the foremost and the best.”
इदमवोच भगवा। इदं वत्वान सुगतो अथापरं एतदवोच सत्था:
Idamavoca bhagavā. Idaṁ vatvāna sugato athāparaṁ etadavoca satthā:
That is what the Buddha said. Then the Holy One, the Teacher, went on to say:
“सुखिनो वत अरहन्तो, तण्हा तेसं न विज्जति; अस्मिमानो समुच्छिन्नो, मोहजालं पदालितं।
“Sukhino vata arahanto, taṇhā tesaṁ na vijjati; Asmimāno samucchinno, mohajālaṁ padālitaṁ.
“Oh! How happy are the perfected ones! Craving is not found in them, the conceit ‘I am’ is cut off, and the net of delusion is shattered.
अनेजं ते अनुप्पत्ता, चित्तं तेसं अनाविलं; लोके अनुपलित्ता ते, ब्रह्मभूता अनासवा।
Anejaṁ te anuppattā, cittaṁ tesaṁ anāvilaṁ; Loke anupalittā te, brahmabhūtā anāsavā.
They’ve attained imperturbability, their minds are unclouded, nothing in the world clings to them, manifesting divinity, undefiled.
पञ्चक्खन्धे परिञ्ञाय, सत्त सद्धम्मगोचरा; पसंसिया सप्पुरिसा, पुत्ता बुद्धस्स ओरसा।
Pañcakkhandhe pariññāya, satta saddhammagocarā; Pasaṁsiyā sappurisā, puttā buddhassa orasā.
Completely understanding the five aggregates, their domain is the seven good qualities. Those good people are praiseworthy, the Buddha’s rightful children.
सत्तरतनसम्पन्ना, तीसु सिक्खासु सिक्खिता; अनुविचरन्ति महावीरा, पहीनभयभेरवा।
Sattaratanasampannā, Tīsu sikkhāsu sikkhitā; Anuvicaranti mahāvīrā, Pahīnabhayabheravā.
Endowed with the seven gems, and trained in the three trainings, the great heroes live on, with fear and dread given up.
दसहङ्गेहि सम्पन्ना, महानागा समाहिता; एते खो सेट्ठा लोकस्मिं, तण्हा तेसं न विज्जति।
Dasahaṅgehi sampannā, mahānāgā samāhitā; Ete kho seṭṭhā lokasmiṁ, taṇhā tesaṁ na vijjati.
Endowed with ten factors, those giants have immersion. These are the best in the world, craving is not found in them.
असेखञाणमुप्पन्नं, अन्तिमोयं समुस्सयो; यो सारो ब्रह्मचरियस्स, तस्मिं अपरपच्चया।
Asekhañāṇamuppannaṁ, antimoyaṁ1 samussayo; Yo sāro brahmacariyassa, tasmiṁ aparapaccayā.
The master’s knowledge has arisen: ‘This bag of bones is my last.’ They are independent of others in the core of the spiritual path.
विधासु न विकम्पन्ति, विप्पमुत्ता पुनब्भवा; दन्तभूमिमनुप्पत्ता, ते लोके विजिताविनो।
Vidhāsu na vikampanti, vippamuttā punabbhavā; Dantabhūmimanuppattā, te loke vijitāvino.
Unwavering in the face of discrimination, they’re freed from future lives. They’ve reached the level of the tamed, in the world, they’re the winners.
उद्धं तिरियं अपाचीनं, नन्दी तेसं न विज्जति; नदन्ति ते सीहनादं, बुद्धा लोके अनुत्तरा”ति।
Uddhaṁ tiriyaṁ apācīnaṁ, nandī tesaṁ na vijjati; Nadanti te sīhanādaṁ, buddhā loke anuttarā”ti.
Above, below, all round, relishing is not found in them. They roar their lion’s roar: ‘The awakened are supreme in the world!’”
