    Chapter One

    Asanisutta

    A Bolt of Lightning

    Sāvatthiyaṁ viharati.

    At Sāvatthī.

    “Dāruṇo, bhikkhave, lābhasakkārasiloko …pe… adhigamāya.

“Possessions, honor, and popularity are brutal …

Kaṁ, bhikkhave, asanivicakkaṁ āgacchatu, sekhaṁ1 appattamānasaṁ lābhasakkārasiloko anupāpuṇātu.

Who should be struck by lightning? A trainee who comes into possessions, honor, and popularity before they achieve their heart’s desire.

    Asanivicakkanti kho, bhikkhave, lābhasakkārasilokassetaṁ adhivacanaṁ.

‘Lightning strike’ is a term for possessions, honor, and popularity.

Evaṁ dāruṇo kho, bhikkhave, lābhasakkārasiloko …pe… evañhi vo, bhikkhave, sikkhitabban”ti.

So brutal are possessions, honor, and popularity. …”

    Chaṭṭhaṁ.
