    A Question About Defilements

    “‘आसवो, आसवोऽति, आवुसो सारिपुत्त, वुच्चति। कतमो नु खो, आवुसो, आसवो”ति?

    “‘Āsavo, āsavo’ti, āvuso sāriputta, vuccati. Katamo nu kho, āvuso, āsavo”ti?

    “Friend Sāriputta, they speak of this thing called ‘defilement’. What is defilement?”

    “तयो मे, आवुसो, आसवा। कामासवो, भवासवो, अविज्जासवो—इमे खो, आवुसो, तयो आसवा”ति।

    “Tayo me, āvuso, āsavā. Kāmāsavo, bhavāsavo, avijjāsavo—ime kho, āvuso, tayo āsavā”ti.

    “Friend, there are three defilements. The defilements of sensuality, desire to be reborn, and ignorance. These are the three defilements.”

    “अत्थि पनावुसो, मग्गो अत्थि पटिपदा एतेसं आसवानं पहानाया”ति?

    “Atthi panāvuso, maggo atthi paṭipadā etesaṁ āsavānaṁ pahānāyā”ti?

    “But, friend, is there a path and a practice for completely understanding these three defilements?”

    “अत्थि खो, आवुसो, मग्गो अत्थि पटिपदा एतेसं आसवानं पहानाया”ति।

    “Atthi kho, āvuso, maggo atthi paṭipadā etesaṁ āsavānaṁ pahānāyā”ti.

    “कतमो पनावुसो, मग्गो कतमा पटिपदा एतेसं आसवानं पहानाया”ति? “अयमेव खो, आवुसो, अरियो अट्ठङ्गिको मग्गो एतेसं आसवानं पहानाय, सेय्यथिदं—सम्मादिट्ठि …पे… सम्मासमाधि। अयं खो, आवुसो, मग्गो अयं पटिपदा, एतेसं आसवानं पहानाया”ति। “भद्दको, आवुसो, मग्गो भद्दिका पटिपदा, एतेसं आसवानं पहानाय। अलञ्च पनावुसो सारिपुत्त, अप्पमादाया”ति।

    “Katamo panāvuso, maggo katamā paṭipadā etesaṁ āsavānaṁ pahānāyā”ti? “Ayameva kho, āvuso, ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo etesaṁ āsavānaṁ pahānāya, seyyathidaṁ—sammādiṭṭhi …pe… sammāsamādhi. Ayaṁ kho, āvuso, maggo ayaṁ paṭipadā, etesaṁ āsavānaṁ pahānāyā”ti. “Bhaddako, āvuso, maggo bhaddikā paṭipadā, etesaṁ āsavānaṁ pahānāya. Alañca panāvuso sāriputta, appamādāyā”ti.
