    Defilements

    “तयोमे, भिक्खवे, आसवा। कतमे तयो? कामासवो, भवासवो, अविज्जासवो—इमे खो, भिक्खवे, तयो आसवा।

    “Tayome, bhikkhave, āsavā. Katame tayo? Kāmāsavo, bhavāsavo, avijjāsavo—ime kho, bhikkhave, tayo āsavā.

    “Bhikkhus, there are these three defilements. What three? The defilements of sensuality, desire to be reborn, and ignorance. These are the three defilements.

    इमेसं खो, भिक्खवे, तिण्णन्नं आसवानं अभिञ्ञाय परिञ्ञाय परिक्खयाय पहानाय …पे… अयं अरियो अट्ठङ्गिको मग्गो भावेतब्बो”ति।

    Imesaṁ kho, bhikkhave, tiṇṇannaṁ āsavānaṁ abhiññāya pariññāya parikkhayāya pahānāya …pe… ayaṁ ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo bhāvetabbo”ti.

    The noble eightfold path should be developed for the direct knowledge, complete understanding, finishing, and giving up of these three defilements.”
