    With Asibandhaka’s Son

    एकं समयं भगवा नाळन्दायं विहरति पावारिकम्बवने।

    Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā nāḷandāyaṁ viharati pāvārikambavane.

    At one time the Buddha was staying near Nāḷandā in Pāvārika’s mango grove.

    अथ खो असिबन्धकपुत्तो गामणि येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवन्तं अभिवादेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदि। एकमन्तं निसिन्नो खो असिबन्धकपुत्तो गामणि भगवन्तं एतदवोच:

    Atha kho asibandhakaputto gāmaṇi yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho asibandhakaputto gāmaṇi bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:

    Then Asibandhaka’s son the chief went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:

    “ब्राह्मणा, भन्ते, पच्छा भूमका कामण्डलुका सेवालमालिका उदकोरोहका अग्गिपरिचारका। ते मतं कालङ्कतं उय्यापेन्ति नाम सञ्ञापेन्ति नाम सग्गं नाम ओक्कामेन्ति। भगवा पन, भन्ते, अरहं सम्मासम्बुद्धो पहोति तथा कातुं यथा सब्बो लोको कायस्स भेदा परं मरणा सुगतिं सग्गं लोकं उपपज्जेय्या”ति?

    “brāhmaṇā, bhante, pacchā bhūmakā kāmaṇḍalukā sevālamālikā udakorohakā aggiparicārakā. Te mataṁ kālaṅkataṁ uyyāpenti nāma saññāpenti nāma saggaṁ nāma okkāmenti. Bhagavā pana, bhante, arahaṁ sammāsambuddho pahoti tathā kātuṁ yathā sabbo loko kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā sugatiṁ saggaṁ lokaṁ upapajjeyyā”ti?

    “Sir, there are western brahmins draped with moss who carry pitchers, immerse themselves in water, and serve the sacred flame. When someone has passed away, they truly lift them up, raise them up, and guide them along to heaven. But what about the Blessed One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha: is he able to ensure that the whole world will be reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm when their body breaks up, after death?”

    “तेन हि, गामणि, तञ्ञेवेत्थ पटिपुच्छिस्सामि। यथा ते खमेय्य तथा नं ब्याकरेय्यासीति।

    “Tena hi, gāmaṇi, taññevettha paṭipucchissāmi. Yathā te khameyya tathā naṁ byākareyyāsīti.

    “Well then, chief, I’ll ask you about this in return, and you can answer as you like.

    तं किं मञ्ञसि, गामणि, इधस्स पुरिसो पाणातिपाती अदिन्नादायी कामेसुमिच्छाचारी मुसावादी पिसुणवाचो फरुसवाचो सम्फप्पलापी अभिज्झालु ब्यापन्नचित्तो मिच्छादिट्ठिको। तमेनं महाजनकायो सङ्गम्म समागम्म आयाचेय्य थोमेय्य पञ्जलिको अनुपरिसक्केय्य: ‘अयं पुरिसो कायस्स भेदा परं मरणा सुगतिं सग्गं लोकं उपपज्जतूऽति। तं किं मञ्ञसि, गामणि, अपि नु सो पुरिसो महतो जनकायस्स आयाचनहेतु वा थोमनहेतु वा पञ्जलिका अनुपरिसक्कनहेतु वा कायस्स भेदा परं मरणा सुगतिं सग्गं लोकं उपपज्जेय्या”ति?

    Taṁ kiṁ maññasi, gāmaṇi, idhassa puriso pāṇātipātī adinnādāyī kāmesumicchācārī musāvādī pisuṇavāco pharusavāco samphappalāpī abhijjhālu byāpannacitto micchādiṭṭhiko. Tamenaṁ mahājanakāyo saṅgamma samāgamma āyāceyya thomeyya pañjaliko anuparisakkeyya: ‘ayaṁ puriso kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā sugatiṁ saggaṁ lokaṁ upapajjatū’ti. Taṁ kiṁ maññasi, gāmaṇi, api nu so puriso mahato janakāyassa āyācanahetu vā thomanahetu vā pañjalikā anuparisakkanahetu vā kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā sugatiṁ saggaṁ lokaṁ upapajjeyyā”ti?

    What do you think, chief? Take a person who kills living creatures, steals, and commits sexual misconduct. They use speech that’s false, divisive, harsh, or nonsensical. And they’re covetous, malicious, and have wrong view. And a large crowd comes together to offer up prayers and praise, circumambulating them with joined palms and saying: ‘When this person’s body breaks up, after death, may they be reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm!’ What do you think, chief? Would that person be reborn in heaven because of their prayers?”

    “नो हेतं, भन्ते”।

    “No hetaṁ, bhante”.

    “No, sir.”

    “सेय्यथापि, गामणि, पुरिसो महतिं पुथुसिलं गम्भीरे उदकरहदे पक्खिपेय्य। तमेनं महा जनकायो सङ्गम्म समागम्म आयाचेय्य थोमेय्य पञ्जलिको अनुपरिसक्केय्य: ‘उम्मुज्ज, भो पुथुसिले, उप्लव, भो पुथुसिले, थलमुप्लव, भो पुथुसिलेऽति। तं किं मञ्ञसि, गामणि, अपि नु सा पुथुसिला महतो जनकायस्स आयाचनहेतु वा थोमनहेतु वा पञ्जलिका अनुपरिसक्कनहेतु वा उम्मुज्जेय्य वा उप्लवेय्य वा थलं वा उप्लवेय्या”ति?

    “Seyyathāpi, gāmaṇi, puriso mahatiṁ puthusilaṁ gambhīre udakarahade pakkhipeyya. Tamenaṁ mahā janakāyo saṅgamma samāgamma āyāceyya thomeyya pañjaliko anuparisakkeyya: ‘ummujja, bho puthusile, uplava, bho puthusile, thalamuplava, bho puthusile’ti. Taṁ kiṁ maññasi, gāmaṇi, api nu sā puthusilā mahato janakāyassa āyācanahetu vā thomanahetu vā pañjalikā anuparisakkanahetu vā ummujjeyya vā uplaveyya vā thalaṁ vā uplaveyyā”ti?

    “Chief, suppose a person were to throw a broad rock into a deep lake. And a large crowd was to come together to offer up prayers and praise, circumambulating it with joined palms, and saying: ‘Rise, good rock! Float, good rock! Float to shore, good rock!’ What do you think, chief? Would that broad rock rise up or float because of their prayers?”

    “नो हेतं, भन्ते”।

    “No hetaṁ, bhante”.

    “No, sir.”

    “एवमेव खो, गामणि, यो सो पुरिसो पाणातिपाती अदिन्नादायी कामेसुमिच्छाचारी मुसावादी पिसुणवाचो फरुसवाचो सम्फप्पलापी अभिज्झालु ब्यापन्नचित्तो मिच्छादिट्ठिको। किञ्चापि तं महा जनकायो सङ्गम्म समागम्म आयाचेय्य थोमेय्य पञ्जलिको अनुपरिसक्केय्य: ‘अयं पुरिसो कायस्स भेदा परं मरणा सुगतिं सग्गं लोकं उपपज्जतूऽति, अथ खो सो पुरिसो कायस्स भेदा परं मरणा अपायं दुग्गतिं विनिपातं निरयं उपपज्जेय्य।

    “Evameva kho, gāmaṇi, yo so puriso pāṇātipātī adinnādāyī kāmesumicchācārī musāvādī pisuṇavāco pharusavāco samphappalāpī abhijjhālu byāpannacitto micchādiṭṭhiko. Kiñcāpi taṁ mahā janakāyo saṅgamma samāgamma āyāceyya thomeyya pañjaliko anuparisakkeyya: ‘ayaṁ puriso kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā sugatiṁ saggaṁ lokaṁ upapajjatū’ti, atha kho so puriso kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā apāyaṁ duggatiṁ vinipātaṁ nirayaṁ upapajjeyya.

    “In the same way, take a person who kills living creatures, steals, and commits sexual misconduct. They use speech that’s false, divisive, harsh, or nonsensical. And they’re covetous, malicious, and have wrong view. Even though a large crowd comes together to offer up prayers and praise … when their body breaks up, after death, they’re reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell.

    तं किं मञ्ञसि, गामणि, इधस्स पुरिसो पाणातिपाता पटिविरतो अदिन्नादाना पटिविरतो कामेसुमिच्छाचारा पटिविरतो मुसावादा पटिविरतो पिसुणाय वाचाय पटिविरतो फरुसाय वाचाय पटिविरतो सम्फप्पलापा पटिविरतो अनभिज्झालु अब्यापन्नचित्तो सम्मादिट्ठिको। तमेनं महा जनकायो सङ्गम्म समागम्म आयाचेय्य थोमेय्य पञ्जलिको अनुपरिसक्केय्य: ‘अयं पुरिसो कायस्स भेदा परं मरणा अपायं दुग्गतिं विनिपातं निरयं उपपज्जतूऽति। तं किं मञ्ञसि, गामणि, अपि नु सो पुरिसो महतो जनकायस्स आयाचनहेतु वा थोमनहेतु वा पञ्जलिका अनुपरिसक्कनहेतु वा कायस्स भेदा परं मरणा अपायं दुग्गतिं विनिपातं निरयं उपपज्जेय्या”ति?

    Taṁ kiṁ maññasi, gāmaṇi, idhassa1 puriso pāṇātipātā paṭivirato adinnādānā paṭivirato kāmesumicchācārā paṭivirato musāvādā paṭivirato pisuṇāya vācāya paṭivirato pharusāya vācāya paṭivirato samphappalāpā paṭivirato anabhijjhālu abyāpannacitto sammādiṭṭhiko. Tamenaṁ mahā janakāyo saṅgamma samāgamma āyāceyya thomeyya pañjaliko anuparisakkeyya: ‘ayaṁ puriso kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā apāyaṁ duggatiṁ vinipātaṁ nirayaṁ upapajjatū’ti. Taṁ kiṁ maññasi, gāmaṇi, api nu so puriso mahato janakāyassa āyācanahetu vā thomanahetu vā pañjalikā anuparisakkanahetu vā kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā apāyaṁ duggatiṁ vinipātaṁ nirayaṁ upapajjeyyā”ti?

    What do you think, chief? Take a person who doesn’t kill living creatures, steal, or commit sexual misconduct. They don’t use speech that’s false, divisive, harsh, or nonsensical. And they’re contented, kind-hearted, and have right view. And a large crowd comes together to offer up prayers and praise, circumambulating them with joined palms and saying: ‘When this person’s body breaks up, after death, may they be reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell!’ What do you think, chief? Would that person be reborn in hell because of their prayers?”

    “नो हेतं, भन्ते”।

    “No hetaṁ, bhante”.

    “No, sir.”

    “सेय्यथापि, गामणि, पुरिसो सप्पिकुम्भं वा तेलकुम्भं वा गम्भीरे उदकरहदे ओगाहेत्वा भिन्देय्य। तत्र यास्स सक्खरा वा कठला वा सा अधोगामी अस्स; यञ्च ख्वस्स तत्र सप्पि वा तेलं वा तं उद्धं गामि अस्स। तमेनं महा जनकायो सङ्गम्म समागम्म आयाचेय्य थोमेय्य पञ्जलिको अनुपरिसक्केय्य: ‘ओसीद, भो सप्पितेल, संसीद, भो सप्पितेल, अधो गच्छ, भो सप्पितेलाऽति। तं किं मञ्ञसि, गामणि, अपि नु तं सप्पितेलं महतो जनकायस्स आयाचनहेतु वा थोमनहेतु वा पञ्जलिका अनुपरिसक्कनहेतु वा ओसीदेय्य वा संसीदेय्य वा अधो वा गच्छेय्या”ति?

    “Seyyathāpi, gāmaṇi, puriso sappikumbhaṁ vā telakumbhaṁ vā gambhīre udakarahade ogāhetvā bhindeyya. Tatra yāssa sakkharā vā kaṭhalā vā sā adhogāmī2 assa; yañca khvassa tatra sappi vā telaṁ vā taṁ uddhaṁ gāmi assa. Tamenaṁ mahā janakāyo saṅgamma samāgamma āyāceyya thomeyya pañjaliko anuparisakkeyya: ‘osīda, bho sappitela, saṁsīda, bho sappitela, adho gaccha, bho sappitelā’ti. Taṁ kiṁ maññasi, gāmaṇi, api nu taṁ sappitelaṁ mahato janakāyassa āyācanahetu vā thomanahetu vā pañjalikā anuparisakkanahetu vā osīdeyya vā saṁsīdeyya vā adho vā gaccheyyā”ti?

    “Chief, suppose a person were to sink a pot of ghee or oil into a deep lake and break it open. Its shards and chips would sink down, while the ghee or oil in it would rise up. And a large crowd was to come together to offer up prayers and praise, circumambulating it with joined palms and saying: ‘Sink, good ghee or oil! Descend, good ghee or oil! Go down, good ghee or oil!’ What do you think, chief? Would that ghee or oil sink and descend because of their prayers?”

    “नो हेतं, भन्ते”।

    “No hetaṁ, bhante”.

    “No, sir.”

    “एवमेव खो, गामणि, यो सो पुरिसो पाणातिपाता पटिविरतो, अदिन्नादाना पटिविरतो, कामेसुमिच्छाचारा पटिविरतो, मुसावादा पटिविरतो, पिसुणाय वाचाय पटिविरतो, फरुसाय वाचाय पटिविरतो, सम्फप्पलापा पटिविरतो, अनभिज्झालु, अब्यापन्नचित्तो, सम्मादिट्ठिको, किञ्चापि तं महा जनकायो सङ्गम्म समागम्म आयाचेय्य थोमेय्य पञ्जलिको अनुपरिसक्केय्य: ‘अयं पुरिसो कायस्स भेदा परं मरणा अपायं दुग्गतिं विनिपातं निरयं उपपज्जतूऽति, अथ खो सो पुरिसो कायस्स भेदा परं मरणा सुगतिं सग्गं लोकं उपपज्जेय्या”ति।

    “Evameva kho, gāmaṇi, yo so puriso pāṇātipātā paṭivirato, adinnādānā paṭivirato, kāmesumicchācārā paṭivirato, musāvādā paṭivirato, pisuṇāya vācāya paṭivirato, pharusāya vācāya paṭivirato, samphappalāpā paṭivirato, anabhijjhālu, abyāpannacitto, sammādiṭṭhiko, kiñcāpi taṁ mahā janakāyo saṅgamma samāgamma āyāceyya thomeyya pañjaliko anuparisakkeyya: ‘ayaṁ puriso kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā apāyaṁ duggatiṁ vinipātaṁ nirayaṁ upapajjatū’ti, atha kho so puriso kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā sugatiṁ saggaṁ lokaṁ upapajjeyyā”ti.

    एवं वुत्ते, असिबन्धकपुत्तो गामणि भगवन्तं एतदवोच: “अभिक्कन्तं, भन्ते …पे… अज्जतग्गे पाणुपेतं सरणं गतन्”ति।

    Evaṁ vutte, asibandhakaputto gāmaṇi bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “abhikkantaṁ, bhante …pe… ajjatagge pāṇupetaṁ saraṇaṁ gatan”ti.

    When he said this, Asibandhaka’s son the chief said to the Buddha, “Excellent, sir! … From this day forth, may the Buddha remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.”
