Desire, Etc. for the Suffering Exterior
“यं, भिक्खवे, दुक्खं, तत्र वो छन्दो पहातब्बो, रागो पहातब्बो, छन्दरागो पहातब्बो। किञ्च, भिक्खवे, दुक्खं?
“Yaṁ, bhikkhave, dukkhaṁ, tatra vo chando pahātabbo, rāgo pahātabbo, chandarāgo pahātabbo. Kiñca, bhikkhave, dukkhaṁ?
“Bhikkhus, you should give up desire … greed … desire and greed for what is suffering. And what is suffering?
रूपा, भिक्खवे, दुक्खा; तत्र वो छन्दो पहातब्बो, रागो पहातब्बो, छन्दरागो पहातब्बो। सद्दा … गन्धा … रसा … फोट्ठब्बा … धम्मा दुक्खा; तत्र वो छन्दो पहातब्बो, रागो पहातब्बो, छन्दरागो पहातब्बो। यं, भिक्खवे, दुक्खं, तत्र वो छन्दो पहातब्बो, रागो पहातब्बो, छन्दरागो पहातब्बो”ति।
Rūpā, bhikkhave, dukkhā; tatra vo chando pahātabbo, rāgo pahātabbo, chandarāgo pahātabbo. Saddā … gandhā … rasā … phoṭṭhabbā … dhammā dukkhā; tatra vo chando pahātabbo, rāgo pahātabbo, chandarāgo pahātabbo. Yaṁ, bhikkhave, dukkhaṁ, tatra vo chando pahātabbo, rāgo pahātabbo, chandarāgo pahātabbo”ti.
Sights, sounds, smells, tastes, touches, and thoughts are suffering …”
