    Many Daughters

    एकं समयं भगवा कोसलेसु विहरति अञ्ञतरस्मिं वनसण्डे।

    Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā kosalesu viharati aññatarasmiṁ vanasaṇḍe.

    At one time the Buddha was staying in the land of the Kosalans in a certain forest grove.

    तेन खो पन समयेन अञ्ञतरस्स भारद्वाजगोत्तस्स ब्राह्मणस्स चतुद्दस बलीबद्दा नट्ठा होन्ति। अथ खो भारद्वाजगोत्तो ब्राह्मणो ते बलीबद्दे गवेसन्तो येन सो वनसण्डो तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा अद्दस भगवन्तं तस्मिं वनसण्डे निसिन्नं पल्लङ्कं आभुजित्वा उजुं कायं पणिधाय परिमुखं सतिं उपट्ठपेत्वा। दिस्वान येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवतो सन्तिके इमा गाथायो अभासि:

    Tena kho pana samayena aññatarassa bhāradvājagottassa brāhmaṇassa catuddasa balībaddā naṭṭhā honti. Atha kho bhāradvājagotto brāhmaṇo te balībadde gavesanto yena so vanasaṇḍo tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā addasa bhagavantaṁ tasmiṁ vanasaṇḍe nisinnaṁ pallaṅkaṁ ābhujitvā ujuṁ kāyaṁ paṇidhāya parimukhaṁ satiṁ upaṭṭhapetvā. Disvāna yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavato santike imā gāthāyo abhāsi:

    Now at that time one of the brahmins of the Bhāradvāja clan had lost fourteen oxen. While looking for them he went to that forest, where he saw the Buddha sitting down cross-legged, his body set straight, and mindfulness established in front of him. He went up to the Buddha, and recited these verses in the Buddha’s presence:

    “न हि नूनिमस्स समणस्स, बलीबद्दा चतुद्दस; अज्जसट्ठिं न दिस्सन्ति, तेनायं समणो सुखी।

    “Na hi1 nūnimassa samaṇassa, Balībaddā catuddasa; Ajjasaṭṭhiṁ na dissanti, Tenāyaṁ samaṇo sukhī.

    “This ascetic mustn’t have fourteen oxen missing for the past six days: that’s why this ascetic is happy.

    न हि नूनिमस्स समणस्स, तिलाखेत्तस्मि पापका; एकपण्णा दुपण्णा च, तेनायं समणो सुखी।

    Na hi nūnimassa samaṇassa, Tilākhettasmi pāpakā; Ekapaṇṇā dupaṇṇā2 ca, Tenāyaṁ samaṇo sukhī.

    This ascetic mustn’t have a field of sesame ruined, with just one or two leaves: that’s why this ascetic is happy.

    न हि नूनिमस्स समणस्स, तुच्छकोट्ठस्मि मूसिका; उस्सोळ्हिकाय नच्चन्ति, तेनायं समणो सुखी।

    Na hi nūnimassa samaṇassa, Tucchakoṭṭhasmi mūsikā; Ussoḷhikāya naccanti, Tenāyaṁ samaṇo sukhī.

    This ascetic mustn’t have rats in a vacant barn dancing merrily: that’s why this ascetic is happy.

    न हि नूनिमस्स समणस्स, सन्थारो सत्तमासिको; उप्पाटकेहि सञ्छन्नो, तेनायं समणो सुखी।

    Na hi nūnimassa samaṇassa, Santhāro sattamāsiko; Uppāṭakehi sañchanno, Tenāyaṁ samaṇo sukhī.

    This ascetic mustn’t have carpets that for seven months have been infested with fleas: that’s why this ascetic is happy.

    न हि नूनिमस्स समणस्स, विधवा सत्त धीतरो; एकपुत्ता दुपुत्ता च, तेनायं समणो सुखी।

    Na hi nūnimassa samaṇassa, Vidhavā satta dhītaro; Ekaputtā duputtā3 ca, Tenāyaṁ samaṇo sukhī.

    This ascetic mustn’t have seven widowed daughters with one or two children each: that’s why this ascetic is happy.

    न हि नूनिमस्स समणस्स, पिङ्गला तिलकाहता; सोत्तं पादेन बोधेति, तेनायं समणो सुखी।

    Na hi nūnimassa samaṇassa, Piṅgalā tilakāhatā; Sottaṁ pādena bodheti, Tenāyaṁ samaṇo sukhī.

    This ascetic mustn’t have a wife with sallow, blotchy skin to wake him with a kick: that’s why this ascetic is happy.

    न हि नूनिमस्स समणस्स, पच्चूसम्हि इणायिका; देथ देथाति चोदेन्ति, तेनायं समणो सुखी”ति।

    Na hi nūnimassa samaṇassa, Paccūsamhi iṇāyikā; Detha dethāti codenti, Tenāyaṁ samaṇo sukhī”ti.

    This ascetic mustn’t have creditors knocking at dawn, warning, ‘Pay up! Pay up!’: that’s why this ascetic is happy.”

    “न हि मय्हं ब्राह्मण, बलीबद्दा चतुद्दस; अज्जसट्ठिं न दिस्सन्ति, तेनाहं ब्राह्मणा सुखी।

    “Na hi mayhaṁ brāhmaṇa, balībaddā catuddasa; Ajjasaṭṭhiṁ na dissanti, tenāhaṁ brāhmaṇā sukhī.

    “You’re right, brahmin, I don’t have fourteen oxen missing for the past six days: that’s why I’m happy, brahmin.

    न हि मय्हं ब्राह्मण, तिलाखेत्तस्मि पापका; एकपण्णा दुपण्णा च, तेनाहं ब्राह्मणा सुखी।

    Na hi mayhaṁ brāhmaṇa, tilākhettasmi pāpakā; Ekapaṇṇā dupaṇṇā ca, tenāhaṁ brāhmaṇā sukhī.

    You’re right, brahmin, I don’t have a field of sesame ruined, with just one or two leaves: that’s why I’m happy, brahmin.

    न हि मय्हं ब्राह्मण, तुच्छकोट्ठस्मि मूसिका; उस्सोळ्हिकाय नच्चन्ति, तेनाहं ब्राह्मणा सुखी।

    You’re right, brahmin, I don’t have seven widowed daughters with one or two children each: that’s why I’m happy, brahmin.

    न हि मय्हं ब्राह्मण, पिङ्गला तिलकाहता; सोत्तं पादेन बोधेति, तेनाहं ब्राह्मणा सुखी।

    Na hi mayhaṁ brāhmaṇa, piṅgalā tilakāhatā; Sottaṁ pādena bodheti, tenāhaṁ brāhmaṇā sukhī.

    You’re right, brahmin, I don’t have a wife with blotchy, pockmarked skin to wake me up with a kick: that’s why I’m happy, brahmin.

    न हि मय्हं ब्राह्मण, पच्चूसम्हि इणायिका; देथ देथाति चोदेन्ति, तेनाहं ब्राह्मणा सुखी”ति।

    Na hi mayhaṁ brāhmaṇa, paccūsamhi iṇāyikā; Detha dethāti codenti, tenāhaṁ brāhmaṇā sukhī”ti.

    You’re right, brahmin, I don’t have creditors knocking at dawn, warning, ‘Pay up! Pay up!’: that’s why I’m happy, brahmin.”

    एवं वुत्ते, भारद्वाजगोत्तो ब्राह्मणो भगवन्तं एतदवोच: “अभिक्कन्तं, भो गोतम, अभिक्कन्तं, भो गोतम। सेय्यथापि, भो गोतम, निक्कुज्जितं वा उक्कुज्जेय्य, पटिच्छन्नं वा विवरेय्य, मूळ्हस्स वा मग्गं आचिक्खेय्य, अन्धकारे वा तेलपज्जोतं धारेय्य: ‘चक्खुमन्तो रूपानि दक्खन्तीऽति; एवमेव भोता गोतमेन अनेकपरियायेन धम्मो पकासितो। एसाहं भवन्तं गोतमं सरणं गच्छामि धम्मञ्च भिक्खुसङ्घञ्च। लभेय्याहं भोतो गोतमस्स सन्तिके पब्बज्जं, लभेय्यं उपसम्पदन्”ति।

    Evaṁ vutte, bhāradvājagotto brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “abhikkantaṁ, bho gotama, abhikkantaṁ, bho gotama. Seyyathāpi, bho gotama, nikkujjitaṁ vā ukkujjeyya, paṭicchannaṁ vā vivareyya, mūḷhassa vā maggaṁ ācikkheyya, andhakāre vā telapajjotaṁ dhāreyya: ‘cakkhumanto rūpāni dakkhantī’ti; evameva bhotā gotamena anekapariyāyena dhammo pakāsito. Esāhaṁ bhavantaṁ gotamaṁ saraṇaṁ gacchāmi dhammañca bhikkhusaṅghañca. Labheyyāhaṁ bhoto gotamassa santike pabbajjaṁ, labheyyaṁ upasampadan”ti.

    When he had spoken, the brahmin said to the Buddha, “Excellent, Master Gotama! Excellent! … As if he were righting the overturned, or revealing the hidden, or pointing out the path to the lost, or lighting a lamp in the dark so people with clear eyes can see what’s there, Master Gotama has made the teaching clear in many ways. I go for refuge to Master Gotama, to the teaching, and to the bhikkhu Saṅgha. May I receive the going forth, the ordination in the ascetic Gotama’s presence?”

    अलत्थ खो भारद्वाजगोत्तो ब्राह्मणो भगवतो सन्तिके पब्बज्जं, अलत्थ उपसम्पदं। अचिरूपसम्पन्नो पनायस्मा भारद्वाजो एको वूपकट्ठो अप्पमत्तो आतापी पहितत्तो विहरन्तो नचिरस्सेव—यस्सत्थाय कुलपुत्ता सम्मदेव अगारस्मा अनगारियं पब्बजन्ति, तदनुत्तरं—ब्रह्मचरियपरियोसानं दिट्ठेव धम्मे सयं अभिञ्ञा सच्छिकत्वा उपसम्पज्ज विहासि।

    Alattha kho bhāradvājagotto brāhmaṇo bhagavato santike pabbajjaṁ, alattha upasampadaṁ. Acirūpasampanno panāyasmā bhāradvājo eko vūpakaṭṭho appamatto ātāpī pahitatto viharanto nacirasseva—yassatthāya kulaputtā sammadeva agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajanti, tadanuttaraṁ—brahmacariyapariyosānaṁ diṭṭheva dhamme sayaṁ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja vihāsi.

    And the brahmin received the going forth, the ordination in the Buddha’s presence. Not long after his ordination, Venerable Bhāradvāja, living alone, withdrawn, diligent, keen, and resolute, soon realized the supreme end of the spiritual path in this very life. He lived having achieved with his own insight the goal for which gentlemen rightly go forth from the lay life to homelessness.

    “खीणा जाति, वुसितं ब्रह्मचरियं, कतं करणीयं, नापरं इत्थत्ताया”ति अब्भञ्ञासि। अञ्ञतरो च पनायस्मा भारद्वाजो अरहतं अहोसीति।

    “Khīṇā jāti, vusitaṁ brahmacariyaṁ, kataṁ karaṇīyaṁ, nāparaṁ itthattāyā”ti abbhaññāsi. Aññataro ca panāyasmā bhāradvājo arahataṁ ahosīti.

    He understood: “Rebirth is ended; the spiritual journey has been completed; what had to be done has been done; there is no return to any state of existence.” And Venerable Bhāradvāja became one of the perfected.

    अरहन्तवग्गो पठमो।

    Arahantavaggo paṭhamo.

    तस्सुद्दानं

    Tassuddānaṁ

    धनञ्जानी च अक्कोसं, असुरिन्दं बिलङ्गिकं; अहिंसकं जटा चेव, सुद्धिकञ्चेव अग्गिका; सुन्दरिकं बहुधीत—रेन च ते दसाति।

    Dhanañjānī ca akkosaṁ, asurindaṁ bilaṅgikaṁ; Ahiṁsakaṁ jaṭā ceva, suddhikañceva aggikā; Sundarikaṁ bahudhīta—rena ca te dasāti.
