Gravely Ill
एकं समयं आयस्मा अनुरुद्धो सावत्थियं विहरति अन्धवनस्मिं आबाधिको दुक्खितो बाळ्हगिलानो। अथ खो सम्बहुला भिक्खू येनायस्मा अनुरुद्धो तेनुपसङ्कमिंसु; उपसङ्कमित्वा आयस्मन्तं अनुरुद्धं एतदवोचुं:
Ekaṁ samayaṁ āyasmā anuruddho sāvatthiyaṁ viharati andhavanasmiṁ ābādhiko dukkhito bāḷhagilāno. Atha kho sambahulā bhikkhū yenāyasmā anuruddho tenupasaṅkamiṁsu; upasaṅkamitvā āyasmantaṁ anuruddhaṁ etadavocuṁ:
At one time Venerable Anuruddha was staying near Sāvatthī in the Dark Forest. And he was sick, suffering, gravely ill. Then several bhikkhus went up to Venerable Anuruddha, and said to him:
“कतमेनायस्मतो अनुरुद्धस्स विहारेन विहरतो उप्पन्ना सारीरिका दुक्खा वेदना चित्तं न परियादाय तिट्ठन्ती”ति?
“Katamenāyasmato anuruddhassa vihārena viharato uppannā sārīrikā dukkhā vedanā cittaṁ na pariyādāya tiṭṭhantī”ti?
“What meditation does Venerable Anuruddha practice so that physical pain doesn’t occupy his mind?”
“चतूसु खो मे, आवुसो, सतिपट्ठानेसु सुप्पतिट्ठितचित्तस्स विहरतो उप्पन्ना सारीरिका दुक्खा वेदना चित्तं न परियादाय तिट्ठन्ति। कतमेसु चतूसु? इधाहं, आवुसो, काये कायानुपस्सी विहरामि …पे… वेदनासु …पे… चित्ते …पे… धम्मेसु धम्मानुपस्सी विहरामि आतापी सम्पजानो सतिमा, विनेय्य लोके अभिज्झादोमनस्सं—इमेसु खो मे, आवुसो, चतूसु सतिपट्ठानेसु सुप्पतिट्ठितचित्तस्स विहरतो उप्पन्ना सारीरिका दुक्खा वेदना चित्तं न परियादाय तिट्ठन्ती”ति।
“Catūsu kho me, āvuso, satipaṭṭhānesu suppatiṭṭhitacittassa viharato uppannā sārīrikā dukkhā vedanā cittaṁ na pariyādāya tiṭṭhanti. Katamesu catūsu? Idhāhaṁ, āvuso, kāye kāyānupassī viharāmi …pe… vedanāsu …pe… citte …pe… dhammesu dhammānupassī viharāmi ātāpī sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ—imesu kho me, āvuso, catūsu satipaṭṭhānesu suppatiṭṭhitacittassa viharato uppannā sārīrikā dukkhā vedanā cittaṁ na pariyādāya tiṭṭhantī”ti.
“Friends, I meditate with my mind firmly established in the four kinds of mindfulness meditation so that physical pain doesn’t occupy my mind. What four? I meditate observing an aspect of the body … feelings … mind … principles—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world. I meditate with my mind firmly established in these four kinds of mindfulness meditation so that physical pain doesn’t occupy my mind.”

Rahogatavaggo paṭhamo.
तस्सुद्दानं
Tassuddānaṁ
रहोगतेन द्वे वुत्ता, सुतनु कण्डकी तयो; तण्हाक्खयसलळागारं, अम्बपालि च गिलानन्ति।
Rahogatena dve vuttā, sutanu kaṇḍakī tayo; Taṇhākkhayasalaḷāgāraṁ, ambapāli ca gilānanti.
