“इध, भिक्खवे, अस्सुतवा पुथुज्जनो अरियानं अदस्सावी …पे… सप्पुरिसधम्मे अविनीतो रूपं अत्ततो समनुपस्सति, रूपवन्तं वा अत्तानं; अत्तनि वा रूपं, रूपस्मिं वा अत्तानं। अयं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, अस्सुतवा पुथुज्जनो रूपबन्धनबद्धो सन्तरबाहिरबन्धनबद्धो अतीरदस्सी अपारदस्सी, बद्धो जीयति बद्धो मीयति बद्धो अस्मा लोका परं लोकं गच्छति।
“Idha, bhikkhave, assutavā puthujjano ariyānaṁ adassāvī …pe… sappurisadhamme avinīto rūpaṁ attato samanupassati, rūpavantaṁ vā attānaṁ; attani vā rūpaṁ, rūpasmiṁ vā attānaṁ. Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, assutavā puthujjano rūpabandhanabaddho santarabāhirabandhanabaddho atīradassī apāradassī, baddho jīyati baddho mīyati1 baddho asmā lokā paraṁ lokaṁ gacchati.
“Bhikkhus, take an unlearned ordinary person who has not seen the noble ones, and is neither skilled nor trained in the teaching of the noble ones. They’ve not seen good persons, and are neither skilled nor trained in the teaching of the good persons. They regard form as self, self as having form, form in self, or self in form. They’re called an unlearned ordinary person who is bound to form, inside and out. They see neither the near shore nor the far shore. They’re born in bonds and die in bonds, and in bonds they go from this world to the next.
वेदनं अत्ततो समनुपस्सति …पे… वेदनाय वा अत्तानं। अयं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, अस्सुतवा पुथुज्जनो वेदनाबन्धनबद्धो सन्तरबाहिरबन्धनबद्धो अतीरदस्सी अपारदस्सी, बद्धो जीयति बद्धो मीयति बद्धो अस्मा लोका परं लोकं गच्छति। सञ्ञं … सङ्खारे … विञ्ञाणं अत्ततो समनुपस्सति …पे… अयं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, अस्सुतवा पुथुज्जनो विञ्ञाणबन्धनबद्धो सन्तरबाहिरबन्धनबद्धो अतीरदस्सी अपारदस्सी, बद्धो जीयति बद्धो मीयति बद्धो अस्मा लोका परं लोकं गच्छति।
Vedanaṁ attato samanupassati …pe… vedanāya vā attānaṁ. Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, assutavā puthujjano vedanābandhanabaddho santarabāhirabandhanabaddho atīradassī apāradassī, baddho jīyati baddho mīyati baddho asmā lokā paraṁ lokaṁ gacchati. Saññaṁ … saṅkhāre … viññāṇaṁ attato samanupassati …pe… ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, assutavā puthujjano viññāṇabandhanabaddho santarabāhirabandhanabaddho atīradassī apāradassī, baddho jīyati baddho mīyati baddho asmā lokā paraṁ lokaṁ gacchati.
They regard feeling … perception … choices … consciousness as self. They’re called an unlearned ordinary person who is bound to consciousness, inside and out. They see neither the near shore nor the far shore. They’re born in bonds and die in bonds, and in bonds they go from this world to the next.
सुतवा च खो, भिक्खवे, अरियसावको अरियानं दस्सावी …पे… सप्पुरिसधम्मे सुविनीतो न रूपं अत्ततो समनुपस्सति, न रूपवन्तं वा अत्तानं; न अत्तनि वा रूपं, न रूपस्मिं वा अत्तानं। अयं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, सुतवा अरियसावको न रूपबन्धनबद्धो, न सन्तरबाहिरबन्धनबद्धो, तीरदस्सी, पारदस्सी; ‘परिमुत्तो सो दुक्खस्माऽति वदामि।
Sutavā ca kho, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako ariyānaṁ dassāvī …pe… sappurisadhamme suvinīto na rūpaṁ attato samanupassati, na rūpavantaṁ vā attānaṁ; na attani vā rūpaṁ, na rūpasmiṁ vā attānaṁ. Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, sutavā ariyasāvako na rūpabandhanabaddho, na santarabāhirabandhanabaddho, tīradassī, pāradassī; ‘parimutto so dukkhasmā’ti vadāmi.
A learned noble disciple has seen the noble ones, and is skilled and trained in the teaching of the noble ones. They’ve seen good persons, and are skilled and trained in the teaching of the good persons. They don’t regard form as self, self as having form, form in self, or self in form. They’re called a learned noble disciple who is not bound to form, inside or out. They see the near shore and the far shore. They’re exempt from suffering, I say.
