    The Burden

    At Sāvatthī.

    “भारञ्च वो, भिक्खवे, देसेस्सामि भारहारञ्च भारादानञ्च भारनिक्खेपनञ्च। तं सुणाथ।

    “bhārañca vo, bhikkhave, desessāmi bhārahārañca bhārādānañca bhāranikkhepanañca. Taṁ suṇātha.

    “Bhikkhus, I will teach you the burden, the bearer of the burden, the picking up of the burden, and the putting down of the burden. Listen …

    कतमो च, भिक्खवे, भारो? पञ्चुपादानक्खन्धा तिस्स वचनीयं। कतमे पञ्च? रूपुपादानक्खन्धो, वेदनुपादानक्खन्धो, सञ्ञुपादानक्खन्धो, सङ्खारुपादानक्खन्धो, विञ्ञाणुपादानक्खन्धो; अयं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, भारो।

    Katamo ca, bhikkhave, bhāro? Pañcupādānakkhandhā tissa vacanīyaṁ. Katame pañca? Rūpupādānakkhandho, vedanupādānakkhandho, saññupādānakkhandho, saṅkhārupādānakkhandho, viññāṇupādānakkhandho; ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, bhāro.

    And what is the burden? The five grasping aggregates, it should be said. What five? The grasping aggregates of form, feeling, perception, choices, and consciousness. This is called the burden.

    कतमो च, भिक्खवे, भारहारो? पुग्गलो तिस्स वचनीयं। य्वायं आयस्मा एवंनामो एवङ्गोत्तो; अयं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, भारहारो।

    Katamo ca, bhikkhave, bhārahāro? Puggalo tissa vacanīyaṁ. Yvāyaṁ āyasmā evaṁnāmo evaṅgotto; ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, bhārahāro.

    And who is the bearer of the burden? The person, it should be said; the venerable of such and such name and clan. This is called the bearer of the burden.

    कतमञ्च, भिक्खवे, भारादानं? यायं तण्हा पोनोभविका नन्दीरागसहगता तत्रतत्राभिनन्दिनी, सेय्यथिदं—कामतण्हा, भवतण्हा, विभवतण्हा। इदं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, भारादानं।

    Katamañca, bhikkhave, bhārādānaṁ? Yāyaṁ taṇhā ponobhavikā1 nandīrāgasahagatā tatratatrābhinandinī, seyyathidaṁ—kāmataṇhā, bhavataṇhā, vibhavataṇhā. Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, bhārādānaṁ.

    And what is the picking up of the burden? It’s the craving that leads to future lives, mixed up with relishing and greed, taking pleasure wherever it lands. That is, craving for sensual pleasures, craving to continue existence, and craving to end existence. This is called the picking up of the burden.

    कतमञ्च, भिक्खवे, भारनिक्खेपनं? यो तस्सायेव तण्हाय असेसविरागनिरोधो चागो पटिनिस्सग्गो मुत्ति अनालयो। इदं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, भारनिक्खेपनन्”ति।

    Katamañca, bhikkhave, bhāranikkhepanaṁ? Yo tassāyeva taṇhāya asesavirāganirodho cāgo paṭinissaggo mutti anālayo. Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, bhāranikkhepanan”ti.

    And what is the putting down of the burden? It’s the fading away and cessation of that very same craving with nothing left over; giving it away, letting it go, releasing it, and not clinging to it. This is called the putting down of the burden.”

    इदमवोच भगवा। इदं वत्वान सुगतो अथापरं एतदवोच सत्था:

    Idamavoca bhagavā. Idaṁ vatvāna2 sugato athāparaṁ etadavoca satthā:

    That is what the Buddha said. Then the Holy One, the Teacher, went on to say:

    “भारा हवे पञ्चक्खन्धा, भारहारो च पुग्गलो; भारादानं दुखं लोके, भारनिक्खेपनं सुखं।

    “Bhārā have pañcakkhandhā, bhārahāro ca puggalo; Bhārādānaṁ dukhaṁ loke, bhāranikkhepanaṁ sukhaṁ.

    “The five aggregates are indeed burdens, and the person is the bearer of the burden. Picking up the burden is suffering in the world, and putting the burden down is happiness.

    निक्खिपित्वा गरुं भारं, अञ्ञं भारं अनादिय; समूलं तण्हमब्बुय्ह, निच्छातो परिनिब्बुतो”ति।

    Nikkhipitvā garuṁ bhāraṁ, aññaṁ bhāraṁ anādiya; Samūlaṁ taṇhamabbuyha, nicchāto parinibbuto”ti.

    When the heavy burden is put down without picking up another, and having plucked out craving, root and all, you’re hungerless, extinguished.”
