    A Monk

    सावत्थिनिदानं।

    Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

    At Sāvatthī.

    अथ खो अञ्ञतरो भिक्खु येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि …पे… एकमन्तं निसिन्नो खो सो भिक्खु भगवन्तं एतदवोच: “‘बोज्झङ्गा, बोज्झङ्गाऽति, भन्ते, वुच्चन्ति। कित्तावता नु खो, भन्ते, ‘बोज्झङ्गाऽति वुच्चन्ती”ति?

    Atha kho aññataro bhikkhu yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami …pe… ekamantaṁ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “‘bojjhaṅgā, bojjhaṅgā’ti, bhante, vuccanti. Kittāvatā nu kho, bhante, ‘bojjhaṅgā’ti vuccantī”ti?

    Then a bhikkhu went up to the Buddha … and asked him, “Sir, they speak of the ‘awakening factors’. How are the awakening factors defined?”

    “बोधाय संवत्तन्तीति खो, भिक्खु, तस्मा ‘बोज्झङ्गाऽति वुच्चन्ति।

    “Bodhāya saṁvattantīti kho, bhikkhu, tasmā ‘bojjhaṅgā’ti vuccanti.

    “Bhikkhu, they’re called awakening factors because they lead to awakening.

    इध, भिक्खु, सतिसम्बोज्झङ्गं भावेति विवेकनिस्सितं विरागनिस्सितं निरोधनिस्सितं वोस्सग्गपरिणामिं …पे… उपेक्खासम्बोज्झङ्गं भावेति विवेकनिस्सितं विरागनिस्सितं निरोधनिस्सितं वोस्सग्गपरिणामिं। तस्सिमे सत्त बोज्झङ्गे भावयतो कामासवापि चित्तं विमुच्चति, भवासवापि चित्तं विमुच्चति, अविज्जासवापि चित्तं विमुच्चति। विमुत्तस्मिं विमुत्तमिति ञाणं होति। ‘खीणा जाति, वुसितं ब्रह्मचरियं, कतं करणीयं, नापरं इत्थत्तायाऽति पजानाति।

    Idha, bhikkhu, satisambojjhaṅgaṁ bhāveti vivekanissitaṁ virāganissitaṁ nirodhanissitaṁ vossaggapariṇāmiṁ …pe… upekkhāsambojjhaṅgaṁ bhāveti vivekanissitaṁ virāganissitaṁ nirodhanissitaṁ vossaggapariṇāmiṁ. Tassime satta bojjhaṅge bhāvayato kāmāsavāpi cittaṁ vimuccati, bhavāsavāpi cittaṁ vimuccati, avijjāsavāpi cittaṁ vimuccati. Vimuttasmiṁ vimuttamiti ñāṇaṁ hoti. ‘Khīṇā jāti, vusitaṁ brahmacariyaṁ, kataṁ karaṇīyaṁ, nāparaṁ itthattāyā’ti pajānāti.

    A bhikkhu develops the awakening factors of mindfulness, investigation of principles, energy, rapture, tranquility, immersion, and equanimity, which rely on seclusion, fading away, and cessation, and ripen as letting go. As they develop the seven awakening factors, their mind is freed from the defilements of sensuality, desire to be reborn, and ignorance. When they’re freed, they know they’re freed. They understand: ‘Rebirth is ended, the spiritual journey has been completed, what had to be done has been done, there is no return to any state of existence.’

    बोधाय संवत्तन्तीति, भिक्खु, तस्मा ‘बोज्झङ्गाऽति वुच्चन्ती”ति।

    Bodhāya saṁvattantīti, bhikkhu, tasmā ‘bojjhaṅgā’ti vuccantī”ti.

    They’re called awakening factors because they lead to awakening.”
