    Brahmadevasutta

    With Brahmadeva

    एवं मे सुतं—एकं समयं भगवा सावत्थियं विहरति जेतवने अनाथपिण्डिकस्स आरामे।

    Evaṁ me sutaṁ—ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.

    So I have heard. At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery.

    तेन खो पन समयेन अञ्ञतरिस्सा ब्राह्मणिया ब्रह्मदेवो नाम पुत्तो भगवतो सन्तिके अगारस्मा अनगारियं पब्बजितो होति।

    Tena kho pana samayena aññatarissā brāhmaṇiyā brahmadevo nāma putto bhagavato santike agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajito hoti.

    Now at that time a certain brahmin lady had a son called Brahmadeva, who had gone forth from the lay life to homelessness in the presence of the Buddha.

    अथ खो आयस्मा ब्रह्मदेवो एको वूपकट्ठो अप्पमत्तो आतापी पहितत्तो विहरन्तो नचिरस्सेव—यस्सत्थाय कुलपुत्ता सम्मदेव अगारस्मा अनगारियं पब्बजन्ति, तदनुत्तरं—ब्रह्मचरियपरियोसानं दिट्ठेव धम्मे सयं अभिञ्ञा सच्छिकत्वा उपसम्पज्ज विहासि।

    Atha kho āyasmā brahmadevo eko vūpakaṭṭho appamatto ātāpī pahitatto viharanto nacirasseva—yassatthāya kulaputtā sammadeva agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajanti, tadanuttaraṁ—brahmacariyapariyosānaṁ diṭṭheva dhamme sayaṁ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja vihāsi.

    Then Venerable Brahmadeva, living alone, withdrawn, diligent, keen, and resolute, soon realized the supreme end of the spiritual path in this very life. He lived having achieved with his own insight the goal for which gentlemen rightly go forth from the lay life to homelessness.

    “खीणा जाति, वुसितं ब्रह्मचरियं, कतं करणीयं, नापरं इत्थत्ताया”ति अब्भञ्ञासि। अञ्ञतरो च पनायस्मा ब्रह्मदेवो अरहतं अहोसि।

    “Khīṇā jāti, vusitaṁ brahmacariyaṁ, kataṁ karaṇīyaṁ, nāparaṁ itthattāyā”ti abbhaññāsi. Aññataro ca panāyasmā brahmadevo arahataṁ ahosi.

    He understood: “Rebirth is ended; the spiritual journey has been completed; what had to be done has been done; there is no return to any state of existence.” And Venerable Brahmadeva became one of the perfected.

    अथ खो आयस्मा ब्रह्मदेवो पुब्बण्हसमयं निवासेत्वा पत्तचीवरमादाय सावत्थिं पिण्डाय पाविसि। सावत्थियं सपदानं पिण्डाय चरमानो येन सकमातु निवेसनं तेनुपसङ्कमि।

    Atha kho āyasmā brahmadevo pubbaṇhasamayaṁ nivāsetvā pattacīvaramādāya sāvatthiṁ piṇḍāya pāvisi. Sāvatthiyaṁ sapadānaṁ piṇḍāya caramāno yena sakamātu nivesanaṁ tenupasaṅkami.

    Then Brahmadeva robed up in the morning and, taking his bowl and robe, entered Sāvatthī for alms. Wandering indiscriminately for almsfood in Sāvatthī, he approached his own mother’s home.

    तेन खो पन समयेन आयस्मतो ब्रह्मदेवस्स माता ब्राह्मणी ब्रह्मुनो आहुतिं निच्चं पग्गण्हाति।

    Tena kho pana samayena āyasmato brahmadevassa mātā brāhmaṇī brahmuno āhutiṁ niccaṁ paggaṇhāti.

    Now at that time Brahmadeva’s mother, the brahmin lady, was offering up a regular oblation to Brahmā.

    अथ खो ब्रह्मुनो सहम्पतिस्स एतदहोसि: “अयं खो आयस्मतो ब्रह्मदेवस्स माता ब्राह्मणी ब्रह्मुनो आहुतिं निच्चं पग्गण्हाति। यन्नूनाहं तं उपसङ्कमित्वा संवेजेय्यन्”ति।

    Atha kho brahmuno sahampatissa etadahosi: “ayaṁ kho āyasmato brahmadevassa mātā brāhmaṇī brahmuno āhutiṁ niccaṁ paggaṇhāti. Yannūnāhaṁ taṁ upasaṅkamitvā saṁvejeyyan”ti.

    Then Brahmā Sahampati thought, “This Venerable Brahmadeva’s mother, the brahmin lady, offers up a regular oblation to Brahmā. Why don’t I go and stir up a sense of urgency in her?”

    अथ खो ब्रह्मा सहम्पति—सेय्यथापि नाम बलवा पुरिसो समिञ्जितं वा बाहं पसारेय्य, पसारितं वा बाहं समिञ्जेय्य; एवमेव—ब्रह्मलोके अन्तरहितो आयस्मतो ब्रह्मदेवस्स मातु निवेसने पातुरहोसि। अथ खो ब्रह्मा सहम्पति वेहासं ठितो आयस्मतो ब्रह्मदेवस्स मातरं ब्राह्मणिं गाथाय अज्झभासि:

    Atha kho brahmā sahampati—seyyathāpi nāma balavā puriso samiñjitaṁ vā bāhaṁ pasāreyya, pasāritaṁ vā bāhaṁ samiñjeyya; evameva—brahmaloke antarahito āyasmato brahmadevassa mātu nivesane pāturahosi. Atha kho brahmā sahampati vehāsaṁ ṭhito āyasmato brahmadevassa mātaraṁ brāhmaṇiṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi:

    Then, as easily as a strong person would extend or contract their arm, he vanished from the Brahmā realm and reappeared in the home of Brahmadeva’s mother. Then Brahmā Sahampati, while standing in the air, addressed Brahmadeva’s mother in verse:

    “दूरे इतो ब्राह्मणि ब्रह्मलोको, यस्साहुतिं पग्गण्हासि निच्चं; नेतादिसो ब्राह्मणि ब्रह्मभक्खो, किं जप्पसि ब्रह्मपथं अजानं।

    “Dūre ito brāhmaṇi brahmaloko, Yassāhutiṁ paggaṇhāsi niccaṁ; Netādiso brāhmaṇi brahmabhakkho, Kiṁ jappasi brahmapathaṁ ajānaṁ.

    “Far from here is the Brahmā realm, madam, to which you offer a regular oblation. But Brahmā doesn’t eat that kind of food. Why pray, when you don’t know the path to Brahmā?

    एसो हि ते ब्राह्मणि ब्रह्मदेवो, निरूपधिको अतिदेवपत्तो; अकिञ्चनो भिक्खु अनञ्ञपोसी, यो ते सो पिण्डाय घरं पविट्ठो।

    Eso hi te brāhmaṇi brahmadevo, Nirūpadhiko atidevapatto; Akiñcano bhikkhu anaññaposī, Yo te so1 piṇḍāya gharaṁ paviṭṭho.

    This Brahmadeva, madam, free of attachments, has surpassed the gods. Owning nothing, providing for no other, a bhikkhu has entered your house for alms.

    आहुनेय्यो वेदगु भावितत्तो, नरानं देवानञ्च दक्खिणेय्यो; बाहित्वा पापानि अनूपलित्तो, घासेसनं इरियति सीतिभूतो।

    Āhuneyyo vedagu bhāvitatto, Narānaṁ devānañca dakkhiṇeyyo; Bāhitvā pāpāni anūpalitto, Ghāsesanaṁ iriyati sītibhūto.

    He’s worthy of offerings dedicated to the gods, a knowledge master, evolved. He’s worthy of a religious donation from gods and men. Having banished all evils, he’s unsullied. Cool at heart, he wanders searching for food.

    न तस्स पच्छा न पुरत्थमत्थि, सन्तो विधूमो अनिघो निरासो; निक्खित्तदण्डो तसथावरेसु, सो त्याहुतिं भुञ्जतु अग्गपिण्डं।

    Na tassa pacchā na puratthamatthi, Santo vidhūmo anigho nirāso; Nikkhittadaṇḍo tasathāvaresu, So tyāhutiṁ bhuñjatu aggapiṇḍaṁ.

    He has no before and after, peaceful, unclouded, untroubled, with no need for hope, he has laid down the rod for all creatures firm and frail. So let him enjoy your offering of choice alms.

    विसेनिभूतो उपसन्तचित्तो, नागोव दन्तो चरति अनेजो; भिक्खु सुसीलो सुविमुत्तचित्तो, सो त्याहुतिं भुञ्जतु अग्गपिण्डं।

    Visenibhūto upasantacitto, Nāgova danto carati anejo; Bhikkhu susīlo suvimuttacitto, So tyāhutiṁ bhuñjatu aggapiṇḍaṁ.

    With peaceful mind, he has left the crowd, he wanders like a tamed elephant, unperturbed. He’s a bhikkhu fair in ethics, with heart well freed. So let him enjoy your offering of choice alms.

    तस्मिं पसन्ना अविकम्पमाना, पतिट्ठपेहि दक्खिणं दक्खिणेय्ये; करोहि पुञ्ञं सुखमायतिकं, दिस्वा मुनिं ब्राह्मणि ओघतिण्णन्ति।

    Tasmiṁ pasannā avikampamānā, Patiṭṭhapehi dakkhiṇaṁ dakkhiṇeyye; Karohi puññaṁ sukhamāyatikaṁ, Disvā muniṁ brāhmaṇi oghatiṇṇanti.

    With unwavering confidence in him, present your religious donation to one who is worthy of it. Now that you’ve seen the sage who has crossed over, madam, make merit for the sake of future happiness!”

    तस्मिं पसन्ना अविकम्पमाना, पतिट्ठपेसि दक्खिणं दक्खिणेय्ये; अकासि पुञ्ञं सुखमायतिकं, दिस्वा मुनिं ब्राह्मणी ओघतिण्णन्”ति।

    Tasmiṁ pasannā avikampamānā, Patiṭṭhapesi dakkhiṇaṁ dakkhiṇeyye; Akāsi puññaṁ sukhamāyatikaṁ, Disvā muniṁ brāhmaṇī oghatiṇṇan”ti.

    With unwavering confidence in him, she presented her religious donation to one who is worthy of it. After seeing the sage who had crossed over, the brahmin lady made merit for the sake of future happiness.
