एकं समयं आयस्मा च सारिपुत्तो, आयस्मा च महाकोट्ठिको बाराणसियं विहरन्ति इसिपतने मिगदाये।
Ekaṁ samayaṁ āyasmā ca sāriputto, āyasmā ca mahākoṭṭhiko bārāṇasiyaṁ viharanti isipatane migadāye.
At one time Venerable Sāriputta and Venerable Mahākoṭṭhita were staying near Varanasi, in the deer park at Isipatana.
अथ खो आयस्मा सारिपुत्तो सायन्हसमयं पटिसल्लाना वुट्ठितो येनायस्मा महाकोट्ठिको तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा आयस्मता महाकोट्ठिकेन सद्धिं सम्मोदि। सम्मोदनीयं कथं सारणीयं वीतिसारेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदि। एकमन्तं निसिन्नो खो आयस्मा सारिपुत्तो आयस्मन्तं महाकोट्ठिकं एतदवोच:
Atha kho āyasmā sāriputto sāyanhasamayaṁ paṭisallānā vuṭṭhito yenāyasmā mahākoṭṭhiko tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā āyasmatā mahākoṭṭhikena saddhiṁ sammodi. Sammodanīyaṁ kathaṁ sāraṇīyaṁ vītisāretvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā sāriputto āyasmantaṁ mahākoṭṭhikaṁ etadavoca:
Then in the late afternoon, Venerable Sāriputta came out of retreat, went to Venerable Mahākoṭṭhita, and they greeted each other. When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to Mahākoṭṭhita:
“‘किं नु खो, आवुसो कोट्ठिक, होति तथागतो परं मरणाऽति …पे…
“‘kiṁ nu kho, āvuso koṭṭhika, hoti tathāgato paraṁ maraṇā’ti …pe…
“Friend Koṭṭhita, does a Realized One exist after death?” …
‘किं पनावुसो, नेव होति न न होति तथागतो परं मरणाऽति इति पुट्ठो समानो: ‘एतम्पि खो, आवुसो, अब्याकतं भगवता—नेव होति न न होति तथागतो परं मरणाऽति वदेसि। को नु खो, आवुसो, हेतु, को पच्चयो, येनेतं अब्याकतं भगवता”ति?
‘kiṁ panāvuso, neva hoti na na hoti tathāgato paraṁ maraṇā’ti iti puṭṭho samāno: ‘etampi kho, āvuso, abyākataṁ bhagavatā—neva hoti na na hoti tathāgato paraṁ maraṇā’ti vadesi. Ko nu kho, āvuso, hetu, ko paccayo, yenetaṁ abyākataṁ bhagavatā”ti?
“Friend, when asked these questions, you say that this has not been declared by the Buddha. What’s the cause, what’s the reason why this has not been declared by the Buddha?”
“रूपारामस्स खो, आवुसो, रूपरतस्स रूपसम्मुदितस्स रूपनिरोधं अजानतो अपस्सतो यथाभूतं, ‘होति तथागतो परं मरणाऽतिपिस्स होति; ‘न होति तथागतो परं मरणाऽतिपिस्स होति; ‘होति च न च होति तथागतो परं मरणाऽतिपिस्स होति; ‘नेव होति न न होति तथागतो परं मरणाऽतिपिस्स होति।
“Rūpārāmassa kho, āvuso, rūparatassa rūpasammuditassa rūpanirodhaṁ ajānato apassato yathābhūtaṁ, ‘hoti tathāgato paraṁ maraṇā’tipissa hoti; ‘na hoti tathāgato paraṁ maraṇā’tipissa hoti; ‘hoti ca na ca hoti tathāgato paraṁ maraṇā’tipissa hoti; ‘neva hoti na na hoti tathāgato paraṁ maraṇā’tipissa hoti.
“Friend, if you like, love, and enjoy form, and don’t truly see the cessation of form, you think ‘a Realized One still exists after death’ or ‘A Realized One no longer exists after death’ or ‘a Realized One both still exists and no longer exists after death’ or ‘a Realized One neither still exists nor no longer exists after death.’
वेदनारामस्स खो, आवुसो, वेदनारतस्स वेदनासम्मुदितस्स, वेदनानिरोधं अजानतो अपस्सतो यथाभूतं, ‘होति तथागतो परं मरणाऽतिपिस्स होति …पे… सञ्ञारामस्स खो, आवुसो …पे… सङ्खारारामस्स खो आवुसो …पे… विञ्ञाणारामस्स खो, आवुसो, विञ्ञाणरतस्स विञ्ञाणसम्मुदितस्स विञ्ञाणनिरोधं अजानतो अपस्सतो यथाभूतं, ‘होति तथागतो परं मरणाऽतिपिस्स होति …पे… ‘नेव होति न न होति तथागतो परं मरणाऽतिपिस्स होति।
Vedanārāmassa kho, āvuso, vedanāratassa vedanāsammuditassa, vedanānirodhaṁ ajānato apassato yathābhūtaṁ, ‘hoti tathāgato paraṁ maraṇā’tipissa hoti …pe… saññārāmassa kho, āvuso …pe… saṅkhārārāmassa kho āvuso …pe… viññāṇārāmassa kho, āvuso, viññāṇaratassa viññāṇasammuditassa viññāṇanirodhaṁ ajānato apassato yathābhūtaṁ, ‘hoti tathāgato paraṁ maraṇā’tipissa hoti …pe… ‘neva hoti na na hoti tathāgato paraṁ maraṇā’tipissa hoti.
If you like, love, and enjoy feeling … perception … choices … consciousness, and don’t truly see the cessation of consciousness, you think ‘a Realized One still exists after death’ … ‘a Realized One neither still exists nor no longer exists after death.’
न रूपारामस्स खो, आवुसो, न रूपरतस्स न रूपसम्मुदितस्स, रूपनिरोधं जानतो पस्सतो यथाभूतं, ‘होति तथागतो परं मरणाऽतिपिस्स न होति …पे… ‘नेव होति न न होति तथागतो परं मरणाऽतिपिस्स न होति। न वेदनारामस्स खो, आवुसो …पे… न सञ्ञारामस्स खो, आवुसो …पे… न सङ्खारारामस्स खो, आवुसो …पे… न विञ्ञाणारामस्स खो, आवुसो, न विञ्ञाणरतस्स न विञ्ञाणसम्मुदितस्स, विञ्ञाणनिरोधं जानतो पस्सतो यथाभूतं, ‘होति तथागतो परं मरणाऽतिपिस्स न होति …पे… ‘नेव होति न न होति तथागतो परं मरणाऽतिपिस्स न होति।
Na rūpārāmassa kho, āvuso, na rūparatassa na rūpasammuditassa, rūpanirodhaṁ jānato passato yathābhūtaṁ, ‘hoti tathāgato paraṁ maraṇā’tipissa na hoti …pe… ‘neva hoti na na hoti tathāgato paraṁ maraṇā’tipissa na hoti. Na vedanārāmassa kho, āvuso …pe… na saññārāmassa kho, āvuso …pe… na saṅkhārārāmassa kho, āvuso …pe… na viññāṇārāmassa kho, āvuso, na viññāṇaratassa na viññāṇasammuditassa, viññāṇanirodhaṁ jānato passato yathābhūtaṁ, ‘hoti tathāgato paraṁ maraṇā’tipissa na hoti …pe… ‘neva hoti na na hoti tathāgato paraṁ maraṇā’tipissa na hoti.
If you don’t like, love, and enjoy form … feeling … perception … choices … consciousness, and you truly see the cessation of consciousness, you don’t think ‘a Realized One still exists after death’ … ‘a Realized One neither still exists nor no longer exists after death.’
अयं खो, आवुसो, हेतु, अयं पच्चयो, येनेतं अब्याकतं भगवता”ति।
Ayaṁ kho, āvuso, hetu, ayaṁ paccayo, yenetaṁ abyākataṁ bhagavatā”ti.
This is the cause, this is the reason why this has not been declared by the Buddha.”
“सिया पनावुसो, अञ्ञोपि परियायो, येनेतं अब्याकतं भगवता”ति?
“Siyā panāvuso, aññopi pariyāyo, yenetaṁ abyākataṁ bhagavatā”ti?
“But friend, could there be another way of explaining why this was not declared by the Buddha?”
“सिया, आवुसो। भवारामस्स खो, आवुसो, भवरतस्स भवसम्मुदितस्स, भवनिरोधं अजानतो अपस्सतो यथाभूतं, ‘होति तथागतो परं मरणाऽतिपिस्स होति …पे… ‘नेव होति न न होति तथागतो परं मरणाऽतिपिस्स होति। न भवारामस्स खो, आवुसो, न भवरतस्स न भवसम्मुदितस्स, भवनिरोधं जानतो पस्सतो यथाभूतं, ‘होति तथागतो परं मरणाऽतिपिस्स न होति …पे… ‘नेव होति न न होति तथागतो परं मरणाऽतिपिस्स न होति। अयम्पि खो, आवुसो, परियायो, येनेतं अब्याकतं भगवता”ति।
“Siyā, āvuso. Bhavārāmassa kho, āvuso, bhavaratassa bhavasammuditassa, bhavanirodhaṁ ajānato apassato yathābhūtaṁ, ‘hoti tathāgato paraṁ maraṇā’tipissa hoti …pe… ‘neva hoti na na hoti tathāgato paraṁ maraṇā’tipissa hoti. Na bhavārāmassa kho, āvuso, na bhavaratassa na bhavasammuditassa, bhavanirodhaṁ jānato passato yathābhūtaṁ, ‘hoti tathāgato paraṁ maraṇā’tipissa na hoti …pe… ‘neva hoti na na hoti tathāgato paraṁ maraṇā’tipissa na hoti. Ayampi kho, āvuso, pariyāyo, yenetaṁ abyākataṁ bhagavatā”ti.
“There could, friend. If you like, love, and enjoy existence, and don’t truly see the cessation of continued existence, you think ‘a Realized One still exists after death’ … ‘a Realized One neither still exists nor no longer exists after death.’ If you don’t like, love, and enjoy existence, and you truly see the cessation of continued existence, you don’t think ‘a Realized One still exists after death’ … ‘a Realized One neither still exists nor no longer exists after death.’ This too is a way of explaining why this was not declared by the Buddha.”
“सिया पनावुसो, अञ्ञोपि परियायो, येनेतं अब्याकतं भगवता”ति?
“Siyā panāvuso, aññopi pariyāyo, yenetaṁ abyākataṁ bhagavatā”ti?
“But friend, could there be another way of explaining why this was not declared by the Buddha?”
“सिया, आवुसो।
“Siyā, āvuso.
“There could, friend.
उपादानारामस्स खो, आवुसो, उपादानरतस्स उपादानसम्मुदितस्स, उपादाननिरोधं अजानतो अपस्सतो यथाभूतं, ‘होति तथागतो परं मरणाऽतिपिस्स होति …पे… ‘नेव होति न न होति तथागतो परं मरणाऽतिपिस्स होति।
Upādānārāmassa kho, āvuso, upādānaratassa upādānasammuditassa, upādānanirodhaṁ ajānato apassato yathābhūtaṁ, ‘hoti tathāgato paraṁ maraṇā’tipissa hoti …pe… ‘neva hoti na na hoti tathāgato paraṁ maraṇā’tipissa hoti.
If you like, love, and enjoy grasping, and don’t truly see the cessation of grasping, you think ‘a Realized One still exists after death’ … ‘a Realized One neither still exists nor no longer exists after death.’
न उपादानारामस्स खो, आवुसो, न उपादानरतस्स न उपादानसम्मुदितस्स, उपादाननिरोधं जानतो पस्सतो यथाभूतं, ‘होति तथागतो परं मरणाऽतिपिस्स न होति …पे… ‘नेव, होति न न होति तथागतो परं मरणाऽतिपिस्स न होति।
Na upādānārāmassa kho, āvuso, na upādānaratassa na upādānasammuditassa, upādānanirodhaṁ jānato passato yathābhūtaṁ, ‘hoti tathāgato paraṁ maraṇā’tipissa na hoti …pe… ‘neva, hoti na na hoti tathāgato paraṁ maraṇā’tipissa na hoti.
If you don’t like, love, and enjoy grasping, and you truly see the cessation of grasping, you don’t think ‘a Realized One still exists after death’ … ‘a Realized One neither still exists nor no longer exists after death.’
अयम्पि खो, आवुसो, परियायो, येनेतं अब्याकतं भगवता”ति।
Ayampi kho, āvuso, pariyāyo, yenetaṁ abyākataṁ bhagavatā”ti.
This too is a way of explaining why this was not declared by the Buddha.”

तण्हारामस्स खो, आवुसो, तण्हारतस्स तण्हासम्मुदितस्स, तण्हानिरोधं अजानतो अपस्सतो यथाभूतं, ‘होति तथागतो परं मरणाऽतिपिस्स होति …पे… ‘नेव होति न न होति तथागतो परं मरणाऽतिपिस्स होति।
Taṇhārāmassa kho, āvuso, taṇhāratassa taṇhāsammuditassa, taṇhānirodhaṁ ajānato apassato yathābhūtaṁ, ‘hoti tathāgato paraṁ maraṇā’tipissa hoti …pe… ‘neva hoti na na hoti tathāgato paraṁ maraṇā’tipissa hoti.
If you like, love, and enjoy craving, and don’t truly see the cessation of craving, you think ‘a Realized One still exists after death’ … ‘a Realized One neither still exists nor no longer exists after death.’
न तण्हारामस्स खो, आवुसो, न तण्हारतस्स न तण्हासम्मुदितस्स, तण्हानिरोधं जानतो पस्सतो यथाभूतं, ‘होति तथागतो परं मरणाऽतिपिस्स न होति …पे… ‘नेव होति न न होति तथागतो परं मरणाऽतिपिस्स न होति।
Na taṇhārāmassa kho, āvuso, na taṇhāratassa na taṇhāsammuditassa, taṇhānirodhaṁ jānato passato yathābhūtaṁ, ‘hoti tathāgato paraṁ maraṇā’tipissa na hoti …pe… ‘neva hoti na na hoti tathāgato paraṁ maraṇā’tipissa na hoti.

“एत्थ दानि, आवुसो सारिपुत्त, इतो उत्तरि किं इच्छसि? तण्हासङ्खयविमुत्तस्स, आवुसो सारिपुत्त, भिक्खुनो वट्टं नत्थि पञ्ञापनाया”ति।
“Ettha dāni, āvuso sāriputta, ito uttari kiṁ icchasi? Taṇhāsaṅkhayavimuttassa, āvuso sāriputta, bhikkhuno vaṭṭaṁ1 natthi paññāpanāyā”ti.
“Seriously, friend, what more could you want? For one who is freed due to the ending of craving, there is no cycle of rebirths to be found.”
