Chandappahānasutta
Giving Up Desire
सावत्थिनिदानं।
Sāvatthinidānaṁ.
At Sāvatthī.
“रूपे, भिक्खवे, यो छन्दो यो रागो या नन्दी या तण्हा, तं पजहथ। एवं तं रूपं पहीनं भविस्सति उच्छिन्नमूलं तालावत्थुकतं अनभावङ्कतं आयतिं अनुप्पादधम्मं।
“Rūpe, bhikkhave, yo chando yo rāgo yā nandī yā taṇhā, taṁ pajahatha. Evaṁ taṁ rūpaṁ pahīnaṁ bhavissati ucchinnamūlaṁ tālāvatthukataṁ anabhāvaṅkataṁ āyatiṁ anuppādadhammaṁ.
“Bhikkhus, you should give up any desire, greed, relishing, and craving for form. Thus that form will be given up, cut off at the root, made like a palm stump, obliterated, and unable to arise in the future.
वेदनाय …पे… सञ्ञाय … सङ्खारेसु … विञ्ञाणे यो छन्दो यो रागो या नन्दी या तण्हा, तं पजहथ। एवं तं विञ्ञाणं पहीनं भविस्सति उच्छिन्नमूलं तालावत्थुकतं अनभावङ्कतं आयतिं अनुप्पादधम्मन्”ति।
Vedanāya …pe… saññāya … saṅkhāresu … viññāṇe yo chando yo rāgo yā nandī yā taṇhā, taṁ pajahatha. Evaṁ taṁ viññāṇaṁ pahīnaṁ bhavissati ucchinnamūlaṁ tālāvatthukataṁ anabhāvaṅkataṁ āyatiṁ anuppādadhamman”ti.
You should give up any desire, greed, relishing, and craving for feeling … perception … choices … consciousness. Thus that consciousness will be given up, cut off at the root, made like a palm stump, obliterated, and unable to arise in the future.”
