Desire
“चत्तारोमे, भिक्खवे, सतिपट्ठाना। कतमे चत्तारो? इध, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु काये कायानुपस्सी विहरति आतापी सम्पजानो सतिमा, विनेय्य लोके अभिज्झादोमनस्सं। तस्स काये कायानुपस्सिनो विहरतो यो कायस्मिं छन्दो सो पहीयति। छन्दस्स पहाना अमतं सच्छिकतं होति।
“Cattārome, bhikkhave, satipaṭṭhānā. Katame cattāro? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kāye kāyānupassī viharati ātāpī sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ. Tassa kāye kāyānupassino viharato yo kāyasmiṁ chando so pahīyati. Chandassa pahānā amataṁ sacchikataṁ hoti.
“Bhikkhus, there are these four kinds of mindfulness meditation. What four? It’s when a bhikkhu meditates by observing an aspect of the body—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world. As they do so they give up desire for the body. When desire is given up they realize the deathless.
वेदनासु वेदनानुपस्सी विहरति आतापी सम्पजानो सतिमा, विनेय्य लोके अभिज्झादोमनस्सं। तस्स वेदनासु वेदनानुपस्सिनो विहरतो यो वेदनासु छन्दो सो पहीयति। छन्दस्स पहाना अमतं सच्छिकतं होति।
Vedanāsu vedanānupassī viharati ātāpī sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ. Tassa vedanāsu vedanānupassino viharato yo vedanāsu chando so pahīyati. Chandassa pahānā amataṁ sacchikataṁ hoti.
They meditate observing an aspect of feelings—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world. As they do so they give up desire for feelings. When desire is given up they realize the deathless.
चित्ते चित्तानुपस्सी विहरति आतापी सम्पजानो सतिमा, विनेय्य लोके अभिज्झादोमनस्सं। तस्स चित्ते चित्तानुपस्सिनो विहरतो यो चित्तम्हि छन्दो सो पहीयति। छन्दस्स पहाना अमतं सच्छिकतं होति।
Citte cittānupassī viharati ātāpī sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ. Tassa citte cittānupassino viharato yo cittamhi chando so pahīyati. Chandassa pahānā amataṁ sacchikataṁ hoti.
They meditate observing an aspect of the mind—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world. As they do so they give up desire for the mind. When desire is given up they realize the deathless.
धम्मेसु धम्मानुपस्सी विहरति आतापी सम्पजानो सतिमा, विनेय्य लोके अभिज्झादोमनस्सं। तस्स धम्मेसु धम्मानुपस्सिनो विहरतो यो धम्मेसु छन्दो सो पहीयति। छन्दस्स पहाना अमतं सच्छिकतं होती”ति।
Dhammesu dhammānupassī viharati ātāpī sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ. Tassa dhammesu dhammānupassino viharato yo dhammesu chando so pahīyati. Chandassa pahānā amataṁ sacchikataṁ hotī”ti.
They meditate observing an aspect of principles—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world. As they do so they give up desire for principles. When desire is given up they realize the deathless.”
