Chaphassāyatanasutta
The Six Fields of Contact
एकं समयं भगवा वेसालियं विहरति महावने कूटागारसालायं।
Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā vesāliyaṁ viharati mahāvane kūṭāgārasālāyaṁ.
At one time the Buddha was staying near Vesālī, at the Great Wood, in the hall with the peaked roof.
तेन खो पन समयेन भगवा छन्नं फस्सायतनानं उपादाय भिक्खूनं धम्मिया कथाय सन्दस्सेति समादपेति समुत्तेजेति सम्पहंसेति। ते च भिक्खू अट्ठिं कत्वा मनसि कत्वा सब्बचेतसा समन्नाहरित्वा ओहितसोता धम्मं सुणन्ति।
Tena kho pana samayena bhagavā channaṁ phassāyatanānaṁ upādāya bhikkhūnaṁ dhammiyā kathāya sandasseti samādapeti samuttejeti sampahaṁseti. Te ca bhikkhū aṭṭhiṁ katvā manasi katvā sabbacetasā samannāharitvā ohitasotā dhammaṁ suṇanti.
Now at that time the Buddha was educating, encouraging, firing up, and inspiring the bhikkhus with a Dhamma talk on the topic of the six fields of contact. And those bhikkhus were paying attention, applying the mind, concentrating wholeheartedly, and actively listening.
अथ खो मारस्स पापिमतो एतदहोसि: “अयं खो समणो गोतमो छन्नं फस्सायतनानं उपादाय भिक्खूनं धम्मिया कथाय सन्दस्सेति समादपेति समुत्तेजेति सप्पहंसेति। ते च भिक्खू अट्ठिं कत्वा मनसि कत्वा सब्बचेतसा समन्नाहरित्वा ओहितसोता धम्मं सुणन्ति। यन्नूनाहं येन समणो गोतमो तेनुपसङ्कमेय्यं विचक्खुकम्माया”ति।
Atha kho mārassa pāpimato etadahosi: “ayaṁ kho samaṇo gotamo channaṁ phassāyatanānaṁ upādāya bhikkhūnaṁ dhammiyā kathāya sandasseti samādapeti samuttejeti sappahaṁseti. Te ca bhikkhū aṭṭhiṁ katvā manasi katvā sabbacetasā samannāharitvā ohitasotā dhammaṁ suṇanti. Yannūnāhaṁ yena samaṇo gotamo tenupasaṅkameyyaṁ vicakkhukammāyā”ti.
Then Māra thought, “This ascetic Gotama is educating, encouraging, firing up, and inspiring the bhikkhus with a Dhamma talk on the topic of the six fields of contact. And those bhikkhus are paying attention, applying the mind, concentrating wholeheartedly, and actively listening. Why don’t I go and pull the wool over their eyes?”
अथ खो मारो पापिमा येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवतो अविदूरे महन्तं भयभेरवं सद्दमकासि, अपिस्सुदं पथवी मञ्ञे उन्द्रीयति। अथ खो अञ्ञतरो भिक्खु अञ्ञतरं भिक्खुं एतदवोच: “भिक्खु भिक्खु, एसा पथवी मञ्ञे उन्द्रीयती”ति।
Atha kho māro pāpimā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavato avidūre mahantaṁ bhayabheravaṁ saddamakāsi, apissudaṁ pathavī maññe undrīyati. Atha kho aññataro bhikkhu aññataraṁ bhikkhuṁ etadavoca: “bhikkhu bhikkhu, esā pathavī maññe undrīyatī”ti.
Then Māra the Wicked went up to the Buddha and made a terrifyingly loud noise close by him. It seemed as if the earth were shattering, so that one of the bhikkhus said to another, “Bhikkhu, bhikkhu, it seems like the earth is shattering!”
एवं वुत्ते, भगवा तं भिक्खुं एतदवोच: “नेसा, भिक्खु, पथवी उन्द्रीयति। मारो एसो पापिमा तुम्हाकं विचक्खुकम्माय आगतो”ति।
Evaṁ vutte, bhagavā taṁ bhikkhuṁ etadavoca: “nesā, bhikkhu, pathavī undrīyati. Māro eso pāpimā tumhākaṁ vicakkhukammāya āgato”ti.
When this was said, the Buddha said to that bhikkhu, “Bhikkhu, that’s not the earth shattering. That’s Māra the Wicked come to pull the wool over your eyes!”
अथ खो भगवा “मारो अयं पापिमा” इति विदित्वा मारं पापिमन्तं गाथाय अज्झभासि:
Atha kho bhagavā “māro ayaṁ pāpimā” iti viditvā māraṁ pāpimantaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi:
Then the Buddha, knowing that this was Māra the Wicked, addressed him in verse:
“रूपा सद्दा रसा गन्धा, फस्सा धम्मा च केवला; एतं लोकामिसं घोरं, एत्थ लोको विमुच्छितो।
“Rūpā saddā rasā gandhā, phassā dhammā ca kevalā; Etaṁ lokāmisaṁ ghoraṁ, ettha loko vimucchito.
“Sights, sounds, tastes, smells, touches, and thoughts, the lot of them—this is the dreadful bait that the world’s infatuated by.
एतञ्च समतिक्कम्म, सतो बुद्धस्स सावको; मारधेय्यं अतिक्कम्म, आदिच्चोव विरोचती”ति।
Etañca samatikkamma, sato buddhassa sāvako; Māradheyyaṁ atikkamma, ādiccova virocatī”ti.
But a mindful disciple of the Buddha has transcended all that. Having slipped free of Māra’s sway, they shine like the sun.”
अथ खो मारो पापिमा …पे… तत्थेवन्तरधायीति।
Atha kho māro pāpimā …pe… tatthevantaradhāyīti.
Then Māra … vanished right there.
