Should Be Seen
“पञ्चिमानि, भिक्खवे, इन्द्रियानि। कतमानि पञ्च? सद्धिन्द्रियं …पे… पञ्ञिन्द्रियं।
“Pañcimāni, bhikkhave, indriyāni. Katamāni pañca? Saddhindriyaṁ …pe… paññindriyaṁ.
“Bhikkhus, there are these five faculties. What five? The faculties of faith, energy, mindfulness, immersion, and wisdom.
कत्थ च, भिक्खवे, सद्धिन्द्रियं दट्ठब्बं? चतूसु सोतापत्तियङ्गेसु—एत्थ सद्धिन्द्रियं दट्ठब्बं।
Kattha ca, bhikkhave, saddhindriyaṁ daṭṭhabbaṁ? Catūsu sotāpattiyaṅgesu—ettha saddhindriyaṁ daṭṭhabbaṁ.
And where should the faculty of faith be seen? In the four factors of stream-entry.
कत्थ च, भिक्खवे, वीरियिन्द्रियं दट्ठब्बं? चतूसु सम्मप्पधानेसु—एत्थ वीरियिन्द्रियं दट्ठब्बं।
Kattha ca, bhikkhave, vīriyindriyaṁ daṭṭhabbaṁ? Catūsu sammappadhānesu—ettha vīriyindriyaṁ daṭṭhabbaṁ.
And where should the faculty of energy be seen? In the four right efforts.
कत्थ च, भिक्खवे, सतिन्द्रियं दट्ठब्बं? चतूसु सतिपट्ठानेसु—एत्थ सतिन्द्रियं दट्ठब्बं।
Kattha ca, bhikkhave, satindriyaṁ daṭṭhabbaṁ? Catūsu satipaṭṭhānesu—ettha satindriyaṁ daṭṭhabbaṁ.
And where should the faculty of mindfulness be seen? In the four kinds of mindfulness meditation.
कत्थ च, भिक्खवे, समाधिन्द्रियं दट्ठब्बं? चतूसु झानेसु—एत्थ समाधिन्द्रियं दट्ठब्बं।
Kattha ca, bhikkhave, samādhindriyaṁ daṭṭhabbaṁ? Catūsu jhānesu—ettha samādhindriyaṁ daṭṭhabbaṁ.
And where should the faculty of immersion be seen? In the four jhānas.
कत्थ च, भिक्खवे, पञ्ञिन्द्रियं दट्ठब्बं? चतूसु अरियसच्चेसु—एत्थ पञ्ञिन्द्रियं दट्ठब्बं।
Kattha ca, bhikkhave, paññindriyaṁ daṭṭhabbaṁ? Catūsu ariyasaccesu—ettha paññindriyaṁ daṭṭhabbaṁ.
And where should the faculty of wisdom be seen? In the four noble truths.
इमानि खो, भिक्खवे, पञ्चिन्द्रियानी”ति।
Imāni kho, bhikkhave, pañcindriyānī”ti.
These are the five faculties.”
