    Devahitasutta

    With Devahita

    सावत्थिनिदानं।

    Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

    At Sāvatthī.

    तेन खो पन समयेन भगवा वातेहाबाधिको होति; आयस्मा च उपवाणो भगवतो उपट्ठाको होति।

    Tena kho pana samayena bhagavā vātehābādhiko hoti; āyasmā ca upavāṇo bhagavato upaṭṭhāko hoti.

    Now at that time the Buddha was afflicted by winds. Venerable Upavāna was his carer.

    अथ खो भगवा आयस्मन्तं उपवाणं आमन्तेसि: “इङ्घ मे त्वं, उपवाण, उण्होदकं जानाही”ति।

    Atha kho bhagavā āyasmantaṁ upavāṇaṁ āmantesi: “iṅgha me tvaṁ, upavāṇa, uṇhodakaṁ jānāhī”ti.

    Then the Buddha said to Upavāna, “Please, Upavāna, find some hot water for me.”

    “एवं, भन्ते”ति खो आयस्मा उपवाणो भगवतो पटिस्सुत्वा निवासेत्वा पत्तचीवरमादाय येन देवहितस्स ब्राह्मणस्स निवेसनं तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा तुण्हीभूतो एकमन्तं अट्ठासि।

    “Evaṁ, bhante”ti kho āyasmā upavāṇo bhagavato paṭissutvā nivāsetvā pattacīvaramādāya yena devahitassa brāhmaṇassa nivesanaṁ tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā tuṇhībhūto ekamantaṁ aṭṭhāsi.

    “Yes, sir,” replied Upavāna. He robed up, and, taking his bowl and robe, went to the home of the brahmin Devahita, and stood silently to one side.

    अद्दसा खो देवहितो ब्राह्मणो आयस्मन्तं उपवाणं तुण्हीभूतं एकमन्तं ठितं। दिस्वान आयस्मन्तं उपवाणं गाथाय अज्झभासि:

    Addasā kho devahito brāhmaṇo āyasmantaṁ upavāṇaṁ tuṇhībhūtaṁ ekamantaṁ ṭhitaṁ. Disvāna āyasmantaṁ upavāṇaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi:

    Devahita saw him standing there and addressed him in verse:

    “तुण्हीभूतो भवं तिट्ठं, मुण्डो सङ्घाटिपारुतो; किं पत्थयानो किं एसं, किं नु याचितुमागतो”ति।

    “Tuṇhībhūto bhavaṁ tiṭṭhaṁ, muṇḍo saṅghāṭipāruto; Kiṁ patthayāno kiṁ esaṁ, kiṁ nu yācitumāgato”ti.

    “Silent stands the Master, shaven, wrapped in his outer robe. What do you want? What are you looking for? What have you come here to ask for?”

    “अरहं सुगतो लोके, वातेहाबाधिको मुनि; सचे उण्होदकं अत्थि, मुनिनो देहि ब्राह्मण।

    “Arahaṁ sugato loke, vātehābādhiko muni; Sace uṇhodakaṁ atthi, munino dehi brāhmaṇa.

    “The perfected one, the Holy One in the world, the sage is afflicted by winds. If there’s hot water, give it to the sage, brahmin.

    पूजितो पूजनेय्यानं, सक्करेय्यान सक्कतो; अपचितो अपचेय्यानं, तस्स इच्छामि हातवे”ति।

    Pūjito pūjaneyyānaṁ, sakkareyyāna sakkato; Apacito apaceyyānaṁ, tassa icchāmi hātave”ti.

    I wish to bring it to the one who is esteemed by the estimable, honored by the honorable, venerated by the venerable.”

    अथ खो देवहितो ब्राह्मणो उण्होदकस्स काजं पुरिसेन गाहापेत्वा फाणितस्स च पुटं आयस्मतो उपवाणस्स पादासि।

    Atha kho devahito brāhmaṇo uṇhodakassa kājaṁ purisena gāhāpetvā phāṇitassa ca puṭaṁ āyasmato upavāṇassa pādāsi.

    Then Devahita had a man fetch a carrying-pole with hot water. He also presented Upavāna with a jar of molasses.

    अथ खो आयस्मा उपवाणो येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवन्तं उण्होदकेन न्हापेत्वा उण्होदकेन फाणितं आलोलेत्वा भगवतो पादासि। अथ खो भगवतो आबाधो पटिप्पस्सम्भि।

    Atha kho āyasmā upavāṇo yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ uṇhodakena nhāpetvā1 uṇhodakena phāṇitaṁ āloletvā bhagavato pādāsi. Atha kho bhagavato ābādho paṭippassambhi.

    Then Venerable Upavāna went up to the Buddha and bathed him with the hot water. Then he stirred molasses into hot water and presented it to the Buddha. Then the Buddha’s illness died down.

    अथ खो देवहितो ब्राह्मणो येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवता सद्धिं सम्मोदि। सम्मोदनीयं कथं सारणीयं वीतिसारेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदि। एकमन्तं निसिन्नो खो देवहितो ब्राह्मणो भगवन्तं गाथाय अज्झभासि:

    Atha kho devahito brāhmaṇo yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavatā saddhiṁ sammodi. Sammodanīyaṁ kathaṁ sāraṇīyaṁ vītisāretvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho devahito brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi:

    Then the brahmin Devahita went up to the Buddha, and exchanged greetings with him. When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side, and addressed the Buddha in verse:

    “कत्थ दज्जा देय्यधम्मं, कत्थ दिन्नं महप्फलं; कथञ्हि यजमानस्स, कथं इज्झति दक्खिणा”ति।

    “Kattha dajjā deyyadhammaṁ, kattha dinnaṁ mahapphalaṁ; Kathañhi yajamānassa, kathaṁ ijjhati dakkhiṇā”ti.

    “Where should you give an available gift? Where is a gift very fruitful? How does one who is donating ensure the success of their religious donation?”

    “पुब्बेनिवासं यो वेदी, सग्गापायञ्च पस्सति; अथो जातिक्खयं पत्तो, अभिञ्ञावोसितो मुनि।

    “Pubbenivāsaṁ yo vedī, saggāpāyañca passati; Atho jātikkhayaṁ patto, abhiññāvosito muni.

    “One who knows their past lives, and sees heaven and places of loss, and has attained the ending of rebirth, that sage has perfect insight.

    एत्थ दज्जा देय्यधम्मं, एत्थ दिन्नं महप्फलं; एवञ्हि यजमानस्स, एवं इज्झति दक्खिणा”ति।

    Ettha dajjā deyyadhammaṁ, ettha dinnaṁ mahapphalaṁ; Evañhi yajamānassa, evaṁ ijjhati dakkhiṇā”ti.

    Here you should give an available gift; what’s given here is very fruitful. That’s how a sponsor of sacrifices ensures the success of their religious donation.”

    एवं वुत्ते, देवहितो ब्राह्मणो भगवन्तं एतदवोच: “अभिक्कन्तं, भो गोतम …पे… उपासकं मं भवं गोतमो धारेतु अज्जतग्गे पाणुपेतं सरणं गतन्”ति।

    Evaṁ vutte, devahito brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “abhikkantaṁ, bho gotama …pe… upāsakaṁ maṁ bhavaṁ gotamo dhāretu ajjatagge pāṇupetaṁ saraṇaṁ gatan”ti.

    When he had spoken, the brahmin Devahita said to the Buddha, “Excellent, Master Gotama … From this day forth, may Master Gotama remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.”
