In Common With the Gods
“चतूहि, भिक्खवे, धम्मेहि समन्नागतं अत्तमना देवा सभागतं कथेन्ति। कतमेहि चतूहि? इध, भिक्खवे, अरियसावको बुद्धे अवेच्चप्पसादेन समन्नागतो होति—इतिपि सो भगवा …पे… सत्था देवमनुस्सानं बुद्धो भगवाति। या ता देवता बुद्धे अवेच्चप्पसादेन समन्नागता इतो चुता तत्रूपपन्ना तासं एवं होति: ‘यथारूपेन खो मयं बुद्धे अवेच्चप्पसादेन समन्नागता ततो चुता इधूपपन्ना, अरियसावकोपि तथारूपेन बुद्धे अवेच्चप्पसादेन समन्नागतो एहीति देवानं सन्तिकेऽति।
“Catūhi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgataṁ attamanā devā sabhāgataṁ1 kathenti. Katamehi catūhi? Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako buddhe aveccappasādena samannāgato hoti—itipi so bhagavā …pe… satthā devamanussānaṁ buddho bhagavāti. Yā tā devatā buddhe aveccappasādena samannāgatā ito cutā tatrūpapannā tāsaṁ evaṁ hoti: ‘yathārūpena kho mayaṁ buddhe aveccappasādena samannāgatā tato cutā idhūpapannā, ariyasāvakopi tathārūpena buddhe aveccappasādena samannāgato ehīti devānaṁ santike’ti.
“Bhikkhus, when someone has four things the gods are pleased and speak of what they have in common. What four? Firstly, a noble disciple has experiential confidence in the Buddha … There are deities with experiential confidence in the Buddha who passed away from here and were reborn there. They think: ‘Having such experiential confidence in the Buddha, we passed away from there and were reborn here. That noble disciple has the same kind of experiential confidence in the Buddha, so they will come into the presence of the gods.’
पुन चपरं, भिक्खवे, अरियसावको धम्मे …पे… सङ्घे …पे… अरियकन्तेहि सीलेहि समन्नागतो होति अखण्डेहि …पे… समाधिसंवत्तनिकेहि। या ता देवता अरियकन्तेहि सीलेहि समन्नागता इतो चुता तत्रूपपन्ना तासं एवं होति: ‘यथारूपेहि खो मयं अरियकन्तेहि सीलेहि समन्नागता ततो चुता इधूपपन्ना, अरियसावकोपि तथारूपेहि अरियकन्तेहि सीलेहि समन्नागतो एहीति देवानं सन्तिकेऽति। इमेहि खो, भिक्खवे, चतूहि धम्मेहि समन्नागतं अत्तमना देवा सभागतं कथेन्ती”ति।
Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako dhamme …pe… saṅghe …pe… ariyakantehi sīlehi samannāgato hoti akhaṇḍehi …pe… samādhisaṁvattanikehi. Yā tā devatā ariyakantehi sīlehi samannāgatā ito cutā tatrūpapannā tāsaṁ evaṁ hoti: ‘yathārūpehi kho mayaṁ ariyakantehi sīlehi samannāgatā tato cutā idhūpapannā, ariyasāvakopi tathārūpehi ariyakantehi sīlehi samannāgato ehīti devānaṁ santike’ti. Imehi kho, bhikkhave, catūhi dhammehi samannāgataṁ attamanā devā sabhāgataṁ kathentī”ti.
Furthermore, a noble disciple has experiential confidence in the teaching … the Saṅgha … And they have the ethical conduct loved by the noble ones … leading to immersion. There are deities with the ethical conduct loved by the noble ones who passed away from here and were reborn there. They think: ‘Having such ethical conduct loved by the noble ones, we passed away from there and were reborn here. That noble disciple has the same kind of ethical conduct loved by the noble ones, so they will come into the presence of the gods.’ When someone has four things the gods are pleased and speak of what they have in common.”
