A Poisoned Arrow
सावत्थियं विहरति।

At Sāvatthī.
“दारुणो, भिक्खवे, लाभसक्कारसिलोको …पे… अधिगमाय।
“Dāruṇo, bhikkhave, lābhasakkārasiloko …pe… adhigamāya.
“Possessions, honor, and popularity are brutal …

Kaṁ, bhikkhave, diddhagatena visallena sallena1 vijjhatu, sekhaṁ appattamānasaṁ lābhasakkārasiloko anupāpuṇātu.
Who should be pierced by a poisoned arrow? A trainee who comes into possessions, honor, and popularity before they achieve their heart’s desire.
सल्लन्ति खो, भिक्खवे, लाभसक्कारसिलोकस्सेतं अधिवचनं।
Sallanti kho, bhikkhave, lābhasakkārasilokassetaṁ adhivacanaṁ.
‘Arrow’ is a term for possessions, honor, and popularity.
एवं दारुणो खो, भिक्खवे, लाभसक्कारसिलोको …पे… एवञ्हि वो, भिक्खवे, सिक्खितब्बन्”ति।
Evaṁ dāruṇo kho, bhikkhave, lābhasakkārasiloko …pe… evañhi vo, bhikkhave, sikkhitabban”ti.
So brutal are possessions, honor, and popularity. …”
