    Dīghāvuupāsakasutta

    With Dīghāvu

    एकं समयं भगवा राजगहे विहरति वेळुवने कलन्दकनिवापे।

    Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā rājagahe viharati veḷuvane kalandakanivāpe.

    At one time the Buddha was staying near Rājagaha, in the Bamboo Grove, the squirrels’ feeding ground.

    तेन खो पन समयेन दीघावु उपासको आबाधिको होति दुक्खितो बाळ्हगिलानो। अथ खो दीघावु उपासको पितरं जोतिकं गहपतिं आमन्तेसि: “एहि त्वं, गहपति, येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कम; उपसङ्कमित्वा मम वचनेन भगवतो पादे सिरसा वन्द: ‘दीघावु, भन्ते, उपासको आबाधिको होति दुक्खितो बाळ्हगिलानो। सो भगवतो पादे सिरसा वन्दतीऽति। एवञ्च वदेहि: ‘साधु किर, भन्ते, भगवा येन दीघावुस्स उपासकस्स निवेसनं तेनुपसङ्कमतु अनुकम्पं उपादायाऽ”ति।

    Tena kho pana samayena dīghāvu upāsako ābādhiko hoti dukkhito bāḷhagilāno. Atha kho dīghāvu upāsako pitaraṁ jotikaṁ gahapatiṁ āmantesi: “ehi tvaṁ, gahapati, yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkama; upasaṅkamitvā mama vacanena bhagavato pāde sirasā vanda: ‘dīghāvu, bhante, upāsako ābādhiko hoti dukkhito bāḷhagilāno. So bhagavato pāde sirasā vandatī’ti. Evañca vadehi: ‘sādhu kira, bhante, bhagavā yena dīghāvussa upāsakassa nivesanaṁ tenupasaṅkamatu anukampaṁ upādāyā’”ti.

    Now at that time the lay follower Dīghāvu was sick, suffering, gravely ill. Then he addressed his father, the householder Jotika, “Please, householder, go to the Buddha, and in my name bow with your head to his feet. Say to him: ‘Sir, the lay follower Dīghāvu is sick, suffering, gravely ill. He bows with his head to your feet.’ And then say: ‘Sir, please visit him at his home out of compassion.’”

    “एवं, ताता”ति खो जोतिको गहपति दीघावुस्स उपासकस्स पटिस्सुत्वा येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवन्तं अभिवादेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदि। एकमन्तं निसिन्नो खो जोतिको गहपति भगवन्तं एतदवोच: “दीघावु, भन्ते, उपासको आबाधिको होति दुक्खितो बाळ्हगिलानो। सो भगवतो पादे सिरसा वन्दति। एवञ्च वदेति: ‘साधु किर, भन्ते, भगवा येन दीघावुस्स उपासकस्स निवेसनं तेनुपसङ्कमतु अनुकम्पं उपादायाऽ”ति। अधिवासेसि भगवा तुण्हीभावेन।

    “Evaṁ, tātā”ti kho jotiko gahapati dīghāvussa upāsakassa paṭissutvā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho jotiko gahapati bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “dīghāvu, bhante, upāsako ābādhiko hoti dukkhito bāḷhagilāno. So bhagavato pāde sirasā vandati. Evañca vadeti: ‘sādhu kira, bhante, bhagavā yena dīghāvussa upāsakassa nivesanaṁ tenupasaṅkamatu anukampaṁ upādāyā’”ti. Adhivāsesi bhagavā tuṇhībhāvena.

    “Yes, dear,” replied Jotika. He did as Dīghāvu asked. The Buddha consented with silence.

    अथ खो भगवा निवासेत्वा पत्तचीवरमादाय येन दीघावुस्स उपासकस्स निवेसनं तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा पञ्ञत्ते आसने निसीदि। निसज्ज खो भगवा दीघावुं उपासकं एतदवोच: “कच्चि ते, दीघावु, खमनीयं, कच्चि यापनीयं? कच्चि दुक्खा वेदना पटिक्कमन्ति, नो अभिक्कमन्ति; पटिक्कमोसानं पञ्ञायति, नो अभिक्कमो”ति?

    Atha kho bhagavā nivāsetvā pattacīvaramādāya yena dīghāvussa upāsakassa nivesanaṁ tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā paññatte āsane nisīdi. Nisajja kho bhagavā dīghāvuṁ upāsakaṁ etadavoca: “kacci te, dīghāvu, khamanīyaṁ, kacci yāpanīyaṁ? Kacci dukkhā vedanā paṭikkamanti, no abhikkamanti; paṭikkamosānaṁ paññāyati, no abhikkamo”ti?

    Then the Buddha robed up in the morning and, taking his bowl and robe, went to the home of the lay follower Dīghāvu, sat down on the seat spread out, and said to him, “I hope you’re keeping well, Dīghāvu; I hope you’re alright. I hope that your pain is fading, not growing, that its fading is evident, not its growing.”

    “न मे, भन्ते, खमनीयं, न यापनीयं। बाळ्हा मे दुक्खा वेदना अभिक्कमन्ति, नो पटिक्कमन्ति; अभिक्कमोसानं पञ्ञायति, नो पटिक्कमो”ति।

    “Na me, bhante, khamanīyaṁ, na yāpanīyaṁ. Bāḷhā me dukkhā vedanā abhikkamanti, no paṭikkamanti; abhikkamosānaṁ paññāyati, no paṭikkamo”ti.

    “Sir, I’m not keeping well, I’m not alright. The pain is terrible and growing, not fading; its growing is evident, not its fading.”

    “तस्मातिह ते, दीघावु, एवं सिक्खितब्बं: ‘बुद्धे अवेच्चप्पसादेन समन्नागतो भविस्सामि—इतिपि सो भगवा अरहं सम्मासम्बुद्धो विज्जाचरणसम्पन्नो सुगतो लोकविदू अनुत्तरो पुरिसदम्मसारथि सत्था देवमनुस्सानं बुद्धो भगवाति। धम्मे …पे… सङ्घे …पे… अरियकन्तेहि सीलेहि समन्नागतो भविस्सामि अखण्डेहि …पे… समाधिसंवत्तनिकेहिऽ। एवञ्हि ते, दीघावु, सिक्खितब्बन्”ति।

    “Tasmātiha te, dīghāvu, evaṁ sikkhitabbaṁ: ‘buddhe aveccappasādena samannāgato bhavissāmi—itipi so bhagavā arahaṁ sammāsambuddho vijjācaraṇasampanno sugato lokavidū anuttaro purisadammasārathi satthā devamanussānaṁ buddho bhagavāti. Dhamme …pe… saṅghe …pe… ariyakantehi sīlehi samannāgato bhavissāmi akhaṇḍehi …pe… samādhisaṁvattanikehi’. Evañhi te, dīghāvu, sikkhitabban”ti.

    “So, Dīghāvu, you should train like this: ‘I will have experiential confidence in the Buddha … the teaching … the Saṅgha … And I will have the ethical conduct loved by the noble ones … leading to immersion.’ That’s how you should train.”

    “यानिमानि, भन्ते, भगवता चत्तारि सोतापत्तियङ्गानि देसितानि, संविज्जन्ते धम्मा मयि, अहञ्च तेसु धम्मेसु सन्दिस्सामि। अहञ्हि, भन्ते, बुद्धे अवेच्चप्पसादेन समन्नागतो—इतिपि सो भगवा …पे… सत्था देवमनुस्सानं बुद्धो भगवाति। धम्मे …पे… सङ्घे …पे… अरियकन्तेहि सीलेहि समन्नागतो अखण्डेहि …पे… समाधिसंवत्तनिकेही”ति।

    “Yānimāni, bhante, bhagavatā cattāri sotāpattiyaṅgāni desitāni, saṁvijjante dhammā mayi, ahañca tesu dhammesu sandissāmi. Ahañhi, bhante, buddhe aveccappasādena samannāgato—itipi so bhagavā …pe… satthā devamanussānaṁ buddho bhagavāti. Dhamme …pe… saṅghe …pe… ariyakantehi sīlehi samannāgato akhaṇḍehi …pe… samādhisaṁvattanikehī”ti.

    “Sir, these four factors of stream-entry that were taught by the Buddha are found in me, and I exhibit them. For I have experiential confidence in the Buddha … the teaching … the Saṅgha … And I have the ethical conduct loved by the noble ones … leading to immersion.”

    “तस्मातिह त्वं, दीघावु, इमेसु चतूसु सोतापत्तियङ्गेसु पतिट्ठाय छ विज्जाभागिये धम्मे उत्तरि भावेय्यासि। इध त्वं, दीघावु, सब्बसङ्खारेसु अनिच्चानुपस्सी विहराहि, अनिच्चे दुक्खसञ्ञी, दुक्खे अनत्तसञ्ञी पहानसञ्ञी विरागसञ्ञी निरोधसञ्ञीति। एवञ्हि ते, दीघावु, सिक्खितब्बन्”ति।

    “Tasmātiha tvaṁ, dīghāvu, imesu catūsu sotāpattiyaṅgesu patiṭṭhāya cha vijjābhāgiye dhamme uttari bhāveyyāsi. Idha tvaṁ, dīghāvu, sabbasaṅkhāresu aniccānupassī viharāhi, anicce dukkhasaññī, dukkhe anattasaññī pahānasaññī virāgasaññī nirodhasaññīti. Evañhi te, dīghāvu, sikkhitabban”ti.

    “In that case, Dīghāvu, grounded on these four factors of stream-entry you should further develop these six things that play a part in realization. You should meditate observing the impermanence of all conditions, perceiving suffering in impermanence, perceiving not-self in suffering, perceiving giving up, perceiving fading away, and perceiving cessation. That’s how you should train.”

    “येमे, भन्ते, भगवता छ विज्जाभागिया धम्मा देसिता, संविज्जन्ते धम्मा मयि, अहञ्च तेसु धम्मेसु सन्दिस्सामि। अहञ्हि, भन्ते, सब्बसङ्खारेसु अनिच्चानुपस्सी विहरामि, अनिच्चे दुक्खसञ्ञी, दुक्खे अनत्तसञ्ञी पहानसञ्ञी विरागसञ्ञी निरोधसञ्ञी।

    “Yeme, bhante, bhagavatā cha vijjābhāgiyā dhammā desitā, saṁvijjante dhammā mayi, ahañca tesu dhammesu sandissāmi. Ahañhi, bhante, sabbasaṅkhāresu aniccānupassī viharāmi, anicce dukkhasaññī, dukkhe anattasaññī pahānasaññī virāgasaññī nirodhasaññī.

    “These six things that play a part in realization that were taught by the Buddha are found in me, and I exhibit them. For I meditate observing the impermanence of all conditions, perceiving suffering in impermanence, perceiving not-self in suffering, perceiving giving up, perceiving fading away, and perceiving cessation.

    अपि च मे, भन्ते, एवं होति: ‘मा हेवायं जोतिको गहपति ममच्चयेन विघातं आपज्जीऽ”ति। “मा त्वं, तात दीघावु, एवं मनसाकासि। इङ्घ त्वं, तात दीघावु, यदेव ते भगवा आह, तदेव त्वं साधुकं मनसि करोही”ति।

    Api ca me, bhante, evaṁ hoti: ‘mā hevāyaṁ jotiko gahapati mamaccayena vighātaṁ āpajjī’”ti. “Mā tvaṁ, tāta dīghāvu, evaṁ manasākāsi. Iṅgha tvaṁ, tāta dīghāvu, yadeva te bhagavā āha, tadeva tvaṁ sādhukaṁ manasi karohī”ti.

    But still, sir, I think, ‘I hope Jotika doesn’t suffer anguish when I’ve gone.’” Jotika said, “Dear Dīghāvu, don’t focus on that. Come on, dear Dīghāvu, you should closely focus on what the Buddha is saying.”

    अथ खो भगवा दीघावुं उपासकं इमिना ओवादेन ओवदित्वा उट्ठायासना पक्कामि। अथ खो दीघावु उपासको अचिरपक्कन्तस्स भगवतो कालमकासि। अथ खो सम्बहुला भिक्खू येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमिंसु; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवन्तं अभिवादेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदिंसु। एकमन्तं निसिन्ना खो ते भिक्खू भगवन्तं एतदवोचुं:

    Atha kho bhagavā dīghāvuṁ upāsakaṁ iminā ovādena ovaditvā uṭṭhāyāsanā pakkāmi. Atha kho dīghāvu upāsako acirapakkantassa bhagavato kālamakāsi. Atha kho sambahulā bhikkhū yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṁsu; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdiṁsu. Ekamantaṁ nisinnā kho te bhikkhū bhagavantaṁ etadavocuṁ:

    When the Buddha had given this advice he got up from his seat and left. Not long after the Buddha left, Dīghāvu passed away. Then several bhikkhus went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:

    “यो सो, भन्ते, दीघावु नाम उपासको भगवता सङ्खित्तेन ओवादेन ओवदितो सो कालङ्कतो। तस्स का गति, को अभिसम्परायो”ति?

    “yo so, bhante, dīghāvu nāma upāsako bhagavatā saṅkhittena ovādena ovadito so kālaṅkato. Tassa kā gati, ko abhisamparāyo”ti?

    “Sir, the lay follower named Dīghāvu, who was advised in brief by the Buddha, has passed away. Where has he been reborn in his next life?”

    “पण्डितो, भिक्खवे, दीघावु उपासको, पच्चपादि धम्मस्सानुधम्मं, न च मं धम्माधिकरणं विहेसेसि। दीघावु, भिक्खवे, उपासको पञ्चन्नं ओरम्भागियानं संयोजनानं परिक्खया ओपपातिको तत्थ परिनिब्बायी अनावत्तिधम्मो तस्मा लोका”ति।

    “Paṇḍito, bhikkhave, dīghāvu upāsako, paccapādi1 dhammassānudhammaṁ, na ca maṁ dhammādhikaraṇaṁ2 vihesesi. Dīghāvu, bhikkhave, upāsako pañcannaṁ orambhāgiyānaṁ saṁyojanānaṁ parikkhayā opapātiko tattha parinibbāyī anāvattidhammo tasmā lokā”ti.

    “Bhikkhus, the lay follower Dīghāvu was astute. He practiced in line with the teachings, and did not trouble me about the teachings. With the ending of the five lower fetters, he’s been reborn spontaneously, and will become extinguished there, not liable to return from that world.”
