Ugly
सावत्थियं जेतवने। तत्र खो …पे… एतदवोच:

“भूतपुब्बं, भिक्खवे, अञ्ञतरो यक्खो दुब्बण्णो ओकोटिमको सक्कस्स देवानमिन्दस्स आसने निसिन्नो अहोसि।
“bhūtapubbaṁ, bhikkhave, aññataro yakkho dubbaṇṇo okoṭimako sakkassa devānamindassa āsane nisinno ahosi.
“Once upon a time, bhikkhus, there was a native spirit who was ugly and deformed. He sat on the throne of Sakka, lord of gods.
तत्र सुदं, भिक्खवे, देवा तावतिंसा उज्झायन्ति खिय्यन्ति विपाचेन्ति: ‘अच्छरियं वत भो, अब्भुतं वत भो। अयं यक्खो दुब्बण्णो ओकोटिमको सक्कस्स देवानमिन्दस्स आसने निसिन्नोऽति। यथा यथा खो, भिक्खवे, देवा तावतिंसा उज्झायन्ति खिय्यन्ति विपाचेन्ति तथा तथा सो यक्खो अभिरूपतरो चेव होति दस्सनीयतरो च पासादिकतरो च।
Tatra sudaṁ, bhikkhave, devā tāvatiṁsā ujjhāyanti khiyyanti vipācenti: ‘acchariyaṁ vata bho, abbhutaṁ vata bho. Ayaṁ yakkho dubbaṇṇo okoṭimako sakkassa devānamindassa āsane nisinno’ti. Yathā yathā kho, bhikkhave, devā tāvatiṁsā ujjhāyanti khiyyanti vipācenti tathā tathā so yakkho abhirūpataro ceva hoti dassanīyataro ca pāsādikataro ca.
But the gods of the Thirty-Three complained, grumbled, and objected, ‘Oh, how incredible, how amazing! This ugly and deformed spirit is sitting on the throne of Sakka, the lord of gods.’ But the more the gods complained, the more attractive, good-looking, and lovely that spirit became.
अथ खो, भिक्खवे, देवा तावतिंसा येन सक्को देवानमिन्दो तेनुपसङ्कमिंसु; उपसङ्कमित्वा सक्कं देवानमिन्दं एतदवोचुं: ‘इध ते, मारिस, अञ्ञतरो यक्खो दुब्बण्णो ओकोटिमको सक्कस्स देवानमिन्दस्स आसने निसिन्नो। तत्र सुदं, मारिस, देवा तावतिंसा उज्झायन्ति खिय्यन्ति विपाचेन्ति: “अच्छरियं वत भो, अब्भुतं वत भो। अयं यक्खो दुब्बण्णो ओकोटिमको सक्कस्स देवानमिन्दस्स आसने निसिन्नो”ति। यथा यथा खो, मारिस, देवा उज्झायन्ति खिय्यन्ति विपाचेन्ति तथा तथा सो यक्खो अभिरूपतरो चेव होति दस्सनीयतरो च पासादिकतरो चाति। सो हि नून, मारिस, कोधभक्खो यक्खो भविस्सतीऽति।
Atha kho, bhikkhave, devā tāvatiṁsā yena sakko devānamindo tenupasaṅkamiṁsu; upasaṅkamitvā sakkaṁ devānamindaṁ etadavocuṁ: ‘idha te, mārisa, aññataro yakkho dubbaṇṇo okoṭimako sakkassa devānamindassa āsane nisinno. Tatra sudaṁ, mārisa, devā tāvatiṁsā ujjhāyanti khiyyanti vipācenti: “acchariyaṁ vata bho, abbhutaṁ vata bho. Ayaṁ yakkho dubbaṇṇo okoṭimako sakkassa devānamindassa āsane nisinno”ti. Yathā yathā kho, mārisa, devā ujjhāyanti khiyyanti vipācenti tathā tathā so yakkho abhirūpataro ceva hoti dassanīyataro ca pāsādikataro cāti. So hi nūna, mārisa, kodhabhakkho yakkho bhavissatī’ti.
So the gods went up to Sakka and told him what had happened, adding, ‘Surely, good sir, that must be the anger-eating spirit!’
अथ खो, भिक्खवे, सक्को देवानमिन्दो येन सो कोधभक्खो यक्खो तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा एकंसं उत्तरासङ्गं करित्वा दक्खिणजाणुमण्डलं पथवियं निहन्त्वा येन सो कोधभक्खो यक्खो तेनञ्जलिं पणामेत्वा तिक्खत्तुं नामं सावेति: ‘सक्कोहं, मारिस, देवानमिन्दो, सक्कोहं, मारिस, देवानमिन्दोऽति। यथा यथा खो, भिक्खवे, सक्को देवानमिन्दो नामं सावेसि तथा तथा सो यक्खो दुब्बण्णतरो चेव अहोसि ओकोटिमकतरो च। दुब्बण्णतरो चेव हुत्वा ओकोटिमकतरो च तत्थेवन्तरधायीति।
Atha kho, bhikkhave, sakko devānamindo yena so kodhabhakkho yakkho tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā ekaṁsaṁ uttarāsaṅgaṁ karitvā dakkhiṇajāṇumaṇḍalaṁ pathaviyaṁ nihantvā yena so kodhabhakkho yakkho tenañjaliṁ paṇāmetvā tikkhattuṁ nāmaṁ sāveti: ‘sakkohaṁ, mārisa, devānamindo, sakkohaṁ, mārisa, devānamindo’ti. Yathā yathā kho, bhikkhave, sakko devānamindo nāmaṁ sāvesi tathā tathā so yakkho dubbaṇṇataro ceva ahosi okoṭimakataro ca. Dubbaṇṇataro ceva hutvā okoṭimakataro ca tatthevantaradhāyīti.
Then Sakka went up to that spirit, arranged his robe over one shoulder, knelt with his right knee on the ground, raised his joined palms toward the anger-eating spirit, and pronounced his name three times: ‘Good sir, I am Sakka, lord of gods! Good sir, I am Sakka, the lord of gods!’ But the more Sakka pronounced his name, the uglier and more deformed the spirit became, until eventually it vanished right there.
अथ खो, भिक्खवे, सक्को देवानमिन्दो सके आसने निसीदित्वा देवे तावतिंसे अनुनयमानो तायं वेलायं इमा गाथायो अभासि:
Atha kho, bhikkhave, sakko devānamindo sake āsane nisīditvā deve tāvatiṁse anunayamāno tāyaṁ velāyaṁ imā gāthāyo abhāsi:
Then Sakka, lord of gods, guiding the gods of the Thirty-Three, recited this verse:
‘न सूपहतचित्तोम्हि, नावत्तेन सुवानयो; न वो चिराहं कुज्झामि, कोधो मयि नावतिट्ठति।
‘Na sūpahatacittomhi, nāvattena suvānayo; Na vo cirāhaṁ kujjhāmi, kodho mayi nāvatiṭṭhati.
‘My mind isn’t easily upset; I’m not easily drawn into the maelstrom. I don’t get angry for long, anger doesn’t last in me.
कुद्धाहं न फरुसं ब्रूमि, न च धम्मानि कित्तये; सन्निग्गण्हामि अत्तानं, सम्पस्सं अत्थमत्तनोऽ”ति।
Kuddhāhaṁ na pharusaṁ brūmi, Na ca dhammāni kittaye; Sanniggaṇhāmi attānaṁ, Sampassaṁ atthamattano’”ti.
When I do get angry I don’t speak harshly, nor do I advertise my own virtues. I carefully restrain myself out of regard for my own welfare.’”
