Duggativinipātabhayasutta
Fear of the Bad Place, the Underworld
“चतूहि, भिक्खवे, धम्मेहि समन्नागतो अरियसावको सब्बदुग्गतिविनिपातभयं समतिक्कन्तो होति। कतमेहि चतूहि? इध, भिक्खवे, अरियसावको बुद्धे अवेच्चप्पसादेन समन्नागतो होति—इतिपि सो भगवा …पे… सत्था देवमनुस्सानं बुद्धो भगवाति। धम्मे …पे… सङ्घे …पे… अरियकन्तेहि सीलेहि समन्नागतो होति अखण्डेहि …पे… समाधिसंवत्तनिकेहि। इमेहि खो, भिक्खवे, चतूहि धम्मेहि समन्नागतो अरियसावको सब्बदुग्गतिविनिपातभयं समतिक्कन्तो होती”ति।
“Catūhi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato ariyasāvako sabbaduggativinipātabhayaṁ samatikkanto hoti. Katamehi catūhi? Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako buddhe aveccappasādena samannāgato hoti—itipi so bhagavā …pe… satthā devamanussānaṁ buddho bhagavāti. Dhamme …pe… saṅghe …pe… ariyakantehi sīlehi samannāgato hoti akhaṇḍehi …pe… samādhisaṁvattanikehi. Imehi kho, bhikkhave, catūhi dhammehi samannāgato ariyasāvako sabbaduggativinipātabhayaṁ samatikkanto hotī”ti.
“Bhikkhus, a noble disciple who has four things has gone beyond all fear of being reborn in a bad place, the underworld. What four? It’s when a noble disciple has experiential confidence in the Buddha … the teaching … the Saṅgha … And they have the ethical conduct loved by the noble ones … leading to immersion. A noble disciple who has these four things has gone beyond all fear of being reborn in a bad place, the underworld.”
