    अथ खो राजा पसेनदि कोसलो दिवा दिवस्स येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा एकमन्तं निसिन्नं खो राजानं पसेनदिं कोसलं भगवा एतदवोच: “हन्द कुतो नु त्वं, महाराज, आगच्छसि दिवा दिवस्सा”ति?

    Atha kho rājā pasenadi kosalo divā divassa yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā ekamantaṁ nisinnaṁ kho rājānaṁ pasenadiṁ kosalaṁ bhagavā etadavoca: “handa kuto nu tvaṁ, mahārāja, āgacchasi divā divassā”ti?

    Then King Pasenadi of Kosala went up to the Buddha in the middle of the day … The Buddha said to him, “So, great king, where are you coming from in the middle of the day?”

    “इध, भन्ते, सावत्थियं सेट्ठि गहपति कालङ्कतो। तमहं अपुत्तकं सापतेय्यं राजन्तेपुरं अतिहरित्वा आगच्छामि। सतं, भन्ते, सतसहस्सानि हिरञ्ञस्सेव, को पन वादो रूपियस्स। तस्स खो पन, भन्ते, सेट्ठिस्स गहपतिस्स एवरूपो भत्तभोगो अहोसि—कणाजकं भुञ्जति बिलङ्गदुतियं। एवरूपो वत्थभोगो अहोसि—साणं धारेति तिपक्खवसनं। एवरूपो यानभोगो अहोसि—जज्जररथकेन याति पण्णछत्तकेन धारियमानेना”ति।

    “Idha, bhante, sāvatthiyaṁ seṭṭhi gahapati kālaṅkato. Tamahaṁ aputtakaṁ sāpateyyaṁ rājantepuraṁ atiharitvā āgacchāmi. Sataṁ, bhante, satasahassāni hiraññasseva, ko pana vādo rūpiyassa. Tassa kho pana, bhante, seṭṭhissa gahapatissa evarūpo bhattabhogo ahosi—kaṇājakaṁ bhuñjati bilaṅgadutiyaṁ. Evarūpo vatthabhogo ahosi—sāṇaṁ dhāreti tipakkhavasanaṁ. Evarūpo yānabhogo ahosi—jajjararathakena yāti paṇṇachattakena dhāriyamānenā”ti.

    “Sir, here in Sāvatthī a financier householder has passed away. Since he died childless, I have come after transferring his fortune to the royal compound. There was ten million in gold, not to mention the silver. And yet that financier ate meals of rough gruel with pickles. He wore clothes consisting of three pieces of sunn hemp. He traveled around in a vehicle that was a dilapidated little cart, holding a leaf as sunshade.”

    “एवमेतं, महाराज, एवमेतं, महाराज। भूतपुब्बं सो, महाराज, सेट्ठि गहपति तग्गरसिखिं नाम पच्चेकसम्बुद्धं पिण्डपातेन पटिपादेसि। ‘देथ समणस्स पिण्डन्ऽति वत्वा उट्ठायासना पक्कामि। दत्वा च पन पच्छा विप्पटिसारी अहोसि: ‘वरमेतं पिण्डपातं दासा वा कम्मकरा वा भुञ्जेय्युन्ऽति। भातु च पन एकपुत्तकं सापतेय्यस्स कारणा जीविता वोरोपेसि।

    “Evametaṁ, mahārāja, evametaṁ, mahārāja. Bhūtapubbaṁ so, mahārāja, seṭṭhi gahapati taggarasikhiṁ nāma paccekasambuddhaṁ piṇḍapātena paṭipādesi. ‘Detha samaṇassa piṇḍan’ti vatvā uṭṭhāyāsanā pakkāmi. Datvā ca pana pacchā vippaṭisārī ahosi: ‘varametaṁ piṇḍapātaṁ dāsā vā kammakarā vā bhuñjeyyun’ti. Bhātu ca pana ekaputtakaṁ sāpateyyassa kāraṇā jīvitā voropesi.

    “That’s so true, great king! That’s so true! Once upon a time, great king, that financier householder provided almsfood on behalf of an independent Buddha named Tagarasikhī. He instructed: ‘Give alms to that ascetic,’ before getting up from his seat and leaving. But after giving he regretted it: ‘It would have been better to feed the bondservants or workers with that almsfood.’ What’s more, he murdered his brother’s only child for the sake of his fortune.

    यं खो सो, महाराज, सेट्ठि गहपति तग्गरसिखिं पच्चेकसम्बुद्धं पिण्डपातेन पटिपादेसि, तस्स कम्मस्स विपाकेन सत्तक्खत्तुं सुगतिं सग्गं लोकं उपपज्जि। तस्सेव कम्मस्स विपाकावसेसेन इमिस्सायेव सावत्थिया सत्तक्खत्तुं सेट्ठित्तं कारेसि। यं खो सो, महाराज, सेट्ठि गहपति दत्वा पच्छा विप्पटिसारी अहोसि: ‘वरमेतं पिण्डपातं दासा वा कम्मकरा वा भुञ्जेय्युन्ऽति, तस्स कम्मस्स विपाकेन नास्सुळाराय भत्तभोगाय चित्तं नमति, नास्सुळाराय वत्थभोगाय चित्तं नमति, नास्सुळाराय यानभोगाय चित्तं नमति, नास्सुळारानं पञ्चन्नं कामगुणानं भोगाय चित्तं नमति। यं खो सो, महाराज, सेट्ठि गहपति भातु च पन एकपुत्तकं सापतेय्यस्स कारणा जीविता वोरोपेसि, तस्स कम्मस्स विपाकेन बहूनि वस्सानि बहूनि वस्ससतानि बहूनि वस्ससहस्सानि बहूनि वस्ससतसहस्सानि निरये पच्चित्थ। तस्सेव कम्मस्स विपाकावसेसेन इदं सत्तमं अपुत्तकं सापतेय्यं राजकोसं पवेसेति। तस्स खो, महाराज, सेट्ठिस्स गहपतिस्स पुराणञ्च पुञ्ञं परिक्खीणं, नवञ्च पुञ्ञं अनुपचितं। अज्ज पन, महाराज, सेट्ठि गहपति महारोरुवे निरये पच्चती”ति।

    Yaṁ kho so, mahārāja, seṭṭhi gahapati taggarasikhiṁ paccekasambuddhaṁ piṇḍapātena paṭipādesi, tassa kammassa vipākena sattakkhattuṁ sugatiṁ saggaṁ lokaṁ upapajji. Tasseva kammassa vipākāvasesena imissāyeva sāvatthiyā sattakkhattuṁ seṭṭhittaṁ kāresi. Yaṁ kho so, mahārāja, seṭṭhi gahapati datvā pacchā vippaṭisārī ahosi: ‘varametaṁ piṇḍapātaṁ dāsā vā kammakarā vā bhuñjeyyun’ti, tassa kammassa vipākena nāssuḷārāya bhattabhogāya cittaṁ namati, nāssuḷārāya vatthabhogāya cittaṁ namati, nāssuḷārāya yānabhogāya cittaṁ namati, nāssuḷārānaṁ pañcannaṁ kāmaguṇānaṁ bhogāya cittaṁ namati. Yaṁ kho so, mahārāja, seṭṭhi gahapati bhātu ca pana ekaputtakaṁ sāpateyyassa kāraṇā jīvitā voropesi, tassa kammassa vipākena bahūni vassāni bahūni vassasatāni bahūni vassasahassāni bahūni vassasatasahassāni niraye paccittha. Tasseva kammassa vipākāvasesena idaṁ sattamaṁ aputtakaṁ sāpateyyaṁ rājakosaṁ paveseti. Tassa kho, mahārāja, seṭṭhissa gahapatissa purāṇañca puññaṁ parikkhīṇaṁ, navañca puññaṁ anupacitaṁ. Ajja pana, mahārāja, seṭṭhi gahapati mahāroruve niraye paccatī”ti.

    Because that financier provided Tagarasikhī with almsfood, as a result of that deed he was reborn seven times in a good place, a heavenly realm. And as a residual result of that same deed he held the position of financier seven times right here in Sāvatthī. But because that financier regretted giving alms, as a result of that deed his mind didn’t tend to enjoy nice food, clothes, vehicles, or the five refined kinds of sensual stimulation. And because that financier murdered his brother’s only child for the sake of his fortune, as a result of that deed he burned in hell for many years, for many hundreds, many thousands, many hundreds of thousands of years. And as a residual result of that same deed, he is childless for the seventh time, his fortune ending up in the royal treasury. Now the old merit of that financier has been used up, and he hasn’t accumulated new merit. Today, great king, that financier burns in the Great Hell of Screams.”

    “एवं, भन्ते, सेट्ठि गहपति महारोरुवं निरयं उपपन्नो”ति।

    “Evaṁ, bhante, seṭṭhi gahapati mahāroruvaṁ nirayaṁ upapanno”ti.

    “Really, sir, that financier has been reborn in the Great Hell of Screams?”

    “एवं, महाराज, सेट्ठि गहपति महारोरुवं निरयं उपपन्नो”ति।

    “Evaṁ, mahārāja, seṭṭhi gahapati mahāroruvaṁ nirayaṁ upapanno”ti.

    “Yes he has, great king.”

    इदमवोच …पे…।

    Idamavoca …pe….

    That is what the Buddha said. …

    “धञ्ञं धनं रजतं जातरूपं, परिग्गहं वापि यदत्थि किञ्चि; दासा कम्मकरा पेस्सा, ये चस्स अनुजीविनो।

    “Dhaññaṁ dhanaṁ rajataṁ jātarūpaṁ, Pariggahaṁ vāpi yadatthi kiñci; Dāsā kammakarā pessā, Ye cassa anujīvino.

    “Grain, wealth, silver, and gold, or whatever other possessions there are; bondservants, workers, employees, and those dependent for their livelihood:

    सब्बं नादाय गन्तब्बं, सब्बं निक्खिप्पगामिनं; यञ्च करोति कायेन, वाचाय उद चेतसा।

    Sabbaṁ nādāya1 gantabbaṁ, sabbaṁ nikkhippagāminaṁ; Yañca karoti kāyena, vācāya uda cetasā.

    you must go on without taking these; all of them are left behind. But the deeds you do by body, speech, and mind—

    तञ्हि तस्स सकं होति, तंव आदाय गच्छति; तंवस्स अनुगं होति, छायाव अनपायिनी।

    Tañhi tassa sakaṁ hoti, taṁva ādāya gacchati; Taṁvassa anugaṁ hoti, chāyāva anapāyinī.

    that’s what you can call your own. That’s what you take when you go. That’s what goes with you, like a shadow that never leaves.

    तस्मा करेय्य कल्याणं, निचयं सम्परायिकं; पुञ्ञानि परलोकस्मिं, पतिट्ठा होन्ति पाणिनन्”ति।

    Tasmā kareyya kalyāṇaṁ, nicayaṁ samparāyikaṁ; Puññāni paralokasmiṁ, patiṭṭhā honti pāṇinan”ti.

    That’s why you should do good, investing in the future life. The good deeds of sentient beings support them in the next world.”

    दुतियो वग्गो।

    Dutiyo vaggo.

    तस्सुद्दानं

    Tassuddānaṁ

    जटिला पञ्च राजानो, दोणपाककुरेन च; सङ्गामेन द्वे वुत्तानि, मल्लिका द्वे अप्पमादेन च; अपुत्तकेन द्वे वुत्ता, वग्गो तेन पवुच्चतीति।

    Jaṭilā pañca rājāno, Doṇapākakurena ca; Saṅgāmena dve vuttāni, Mallikā2 dve appamādena ca; Aputtakena dve vuttā, Vaggo tena pavuccatīti.
