अथ खो सम्बहुला भिक्खू येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमिंसु …पे… एकमन्तं निसिन्ने खो ते भिक्खू भगवा एतदवोच:
Atha kho sambahulā bhikkhū yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṁsu …pe… ekamantaṁ nisinne kho te bhikkhū bhagavā etadavoca:
Then several bhikkhus went up to the Buddha … The Buddha said to them:
“कतमा नु खो, भिक्खवे, इद्धि, कतमो इद्धिपादो, कतमा इद्धिपादभावना, कतमा इद्धिपादभावनागामिनी पटिपदा”ति?
“katamā nu kho, bhikkhave, iddhi, katamo iddhipādo, katamā iddhipādabhāvanā, katamā iddhipādabhāvanāgāminī paṭipadā”ti?
“Bhikkhus, what is psychic power? What is the basis of psychic power? What is the development of the bases of psychic power? And what is the practice that leads to the development of the bases of psychic power?”
“भगवंमूलका नो, भन्ते, धम्मा भगवंनेत्तिका …पे…।
“Bhagavaṁmūlakā no, bhante, dhammā bhagavaṁnettikā …pe….
“Our teachings are rooted in the Buddha. He is our guide and our refuge. …”
“कतमा च, भिक्खवे, इद्धि? इध, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु अनेकविहितं इद्धिविधं पच्चनुभोति—एकोपि हुत्वा बहुधा होति …पे… याव ब्रह्मलोकापि कायेन वसं वत्तेति—अयं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, इद्धि।
“Katamā ca, bhikkhave, iddhi? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu anekavihitaṁ iddhividhaṁ paccanubhoti—ekopi hutvā bahudhā hoti …pe… yāva brahmalokāpi kāyena vasaṁ vatteti—ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, iddhi.
“And what is psychic power? It’s a bhikkhu who wields the many kinds of psychic power: multiplying themselves and becoming one again … controlling the body as far as the Brahmā realm. This is called psychic power.
कतमो च, भिक्खवे, इद्धिपादो? यो, भिक्खवे, मग्गो, या पटिपदा इद्धिलाभाय इद्धिपटिलाभाय संवत्तति—अयं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, इद्धिपादो।
Katamo ca, bhikkhave, iddhipādo? Yo, bhikkhave, maggo, yā paṭipadā iddhilābhāya iddhipaṭilābhāya saṁvattati—ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, iddhipādo.
And what is the basis of psychic power? The path and practice that leads to gaining psychic power. This is called the basis of psychic power.
कतमा च, भिक्खवे, इद्धिपादभावना? इध, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु छन्दसमाधिप्पधानसङ्खारसमन्नागतं इद्धिपादं भावेति, वीरियसमाधि …पे… चित्तसमाधि … वीमंसासमाधिप्पधानसङ्खारसमन्नागतं इद्धिपादं भावेति—अयं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, इद्धिपादभावना।
Katamā ca, bhikkhave, iddhipādabhāvanā? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu chandasamādhippadhānasaṅkhārasamannāgataṁ iddhipādaṁ bhāveti, vīriyasamādhi …pe… cittasamādhi … vīmaṁsāsamādhippadhānasaṅkhārasamannāgataṁ iddhipādaṁ bhāveti—ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, iddhipādabhāvanā.
And what is the development of the bases of psychic power? It’s when a bhikkhu develops the basis of psychic power that has immersion due to enthusiasm … energy … mental development … inquiry, and active effort. This is called the development of the bases of psychic power.
कतमा च, भिक्खवे, इद्धिपादभावनागामिनी पटिपदा? अयमेव अरियो अट्ठङ्गिको मग्गो, सेय्यथिदं—सम्मादिट्ठि …पे… सम्मासमाधि—अयं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, इद्धिपादभावनागामिनी पटिपदा”ति।
Katamā ca, bhikkhave, iddhipādabhāvanāgāminī paṭipadā? Ayameva ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo, seyyathidaṁ—sammādiṭṭhi …pe… sammāsamādhi—ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, iddhipādabhāvanāgāminī paṭipadā”ti.
And what is the practice that leads to the development of the bases of psychic power? It is simply this noble eightfold path, that is: right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion. This is called the practice that leads to the development of the bases of psychic power.”
