Sick (2nd)
एकं समयं भगवा राजगहे विहरति वेळुवने कलन्दकनिवापे। तेन खो पन समयेन आयस्मा महामोग्गल्लानो गिज्झकूटे पब्बते विहरति आबाधिको दुक्खितो बाळ्हगिलानो। अथ खो भगवा सायन्हसमयं पटिसल्लाना वुट्ठितो येनायस्मा महामोग्गल्लानो तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा पञ्ञत्ते आसने निसीदि। निसज्ज खो भगवा आयस्मन्तं महामोग्गल्लानं एतदवोच:
Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā rājagahe viharati veḷuvane kalandakanivāpe. Tena kho pana samayena āyasmā mahāmoggallāno gijjhakūṭe pabbate viharati ābādhiko dukkhito bāḷhagilāno. Atha kho bhagavā sāyanhasamayaṁ paṭisallānā vuṭṭhito yenāyasmā mahāmoggallāno tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā paññatte āsane nisīdi. Nisajja kho bhagavā āyasmantaṁ mahāmoggallānaṁ etadavoca:
At one time the Buddha was staying near Rājagaha, in the Bamboo Grove, the squirrels’ feeding ground. Now at that time Venerable Mahāmoggallāna was staying on the Vulture’s Peak mountain, and he was sick, suffering, gravely ill. Then in the late afternoon, the Buddha came out of retreat, went to Venerable Moggallāna, sat down on the seat spread out, and said to him:
“कच्चि ते, मोग्गल्लान, खमनीयं कच्चि यापनीयं? कच्चि दुक्खा वेदना पटिक्कमन्ति, नो अभिक्कमन्ति; पटिक्कमोसानं पञ्ञायति, नो अभिक्कमो”ति?
“Kacci te, moggallāna, khamanīyaṁ kacci yāpanīyaṁ? Kacci dukkhā vedanā paṭikkamanti, no abhikkamanti; paṭikkamosānaṁ paññāyati, no abhikkamo”ti?
“I hope you’re keeping well, Moggallāna; I hope you’re alright. And I hope the pain is fading, not growing, that its fading is evident, not its growing.”
“न मे, भन्ते, खमनीयं, न यापनीयं। बाळ्हा मे दुक्खा वेदना अभिक्कमन्ति, नो पटिक्कमन्ति; अभिक्कमोसानं पञ्ञायति, नो पटिक्कमो”ति।
“Na me, bhante, khamanīyaṁ, na yāpanīyaṁ. Bāḷhā me dukkhā vedanā abhikkamanti, no paṭikkamanti; abhikkamosānaṁ paññāyati, no paṭikkamo”ti.
“Sir, I’m not keeping well, I’m not alright. The pain is terrible and growing, not fading; its growing is evident, not its fading.”
“सत्तिमे, मोग्गल्लान, बोज्झङ्गा मया सम्मदक्खाता भाविता बहुलीकता अभिञ्ञाय सम्बोधाय निब्बानाय संवत्तन्ति। कतमे सत्त? सतिसम्बोज्झङ्गो खो, मोग्गल्लान, मया सम्मदक्खातो भावितो बहुलीकतो अभिञ्ञाय सम्बोधाय निब्बानाय संवत्तति …पे… उपेक्खासम्बोज्झङ्गो खो, मोग्गल्लान, मया सम्मदक्खातो भावितो बहुलीकतो अभिञ्ञाय सम्बोधाय निब्बानाय संवत्तति। इमे खो, मोग्गल्लान, सत्त बोज्झङ्गा मया सम्मदक्खाता भाविता बहुलीकता अभिञ्ञाय सम्बोधाय निब्बानाय संवत्तन्ती”ति।
“Sattime, moggallāna, bojjhaṅgā mayā sammadakkhātā bhāvitā bahulīkatā abhiññāya sambodhāya nibbānāya saṁvattanti. Katame satta? Satisambojjhaṅgo kho, moggallāna, mayā sammadakkhāto bhāvito bahulīkato abhiññāya sambodhāya nibbānāya saṁvattati …pe… upekkhāsambojjhaṅgo kho, moggallāna, mayā sammadakkhāto bhāvito bahulīkato abhiññāya sambodhāya nibbānāya saṁvattati. Ime kho, moggallāna, satta bojjhaṅgā mayā sammadakkhātā bhāvitā bahulīkatā abhiññāya sambodhāya nibbānāya saṁvattantī”ti.
“Moggallāna, I’ve rightly explained these seven awakening factors. When developed and cultivated, they lead to direct knowledge, to awakening, and to Nibbana. What seven? The awakening factors of mindfulness, investigation of principles, energy, rapture, tranquility, immersion, and equanimity. These are the seven awakening factors that I’ve rightly explained. When developed and cultivated, they lead to direct knowledge, to awakening, and to Nibbana.”
“तग्घ, भगवा, बोज्झङ्गा; तग्घ, सुगत, बोज्झङ्गा”ति।
“Taggha, bhagavā, bojjhaṅgā; taggha, sugata, bojjhaṅgā”ti.
“Indeed, Blessed One, these are awakening factors! Indeed, Holy One, these are awakening factors!”
इदमवोच भगवा। अत्तमनो आयस्मा महामोग्गल्लानो भगवतो भासितं अभिनन्दि। वुट्ठहि चायस्मा महामोग्गल्लानो तम्हा आबाधा। तथापहीनो चायस्मतो महामोग्गल्लानस्स सो आबाधो अहोसीति।
Idamavoca bhagavā. Attamano āyasmā mahāmoggallāno bhagavato bhāsitaṁ abhinandi. Vuṭṭhahi cāyasmā mahāmoggallāno tamhā ābādhā. Tathāpahīno cāyasmato mahāmoggallānassa so ābādho ahosīti.
That is what the Buddha said. Satisfied, Venerable Mahāmoggallāna was happy with what the Buddha said. And that’s how he recovered from that illness.
