    एवं मे सुतं—एकं समयं भगवा सक्केसु विहरति कपिलवत्थुस्मिं निग्रोधारामे। अथ खो महानामो सक्को येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवन्तं अभिवादेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदि। एकमन्तं निसिन्नो खो महानामो सक्को भगवन्तं एतदवोच:

    Evaṁ me sutaṁ—ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sakkesu viharati kapilavatthusmiṁ nigrodhārāme. Atha kho mahānāmo sakko yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho mahānāmo sakko bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:

    So I have heard. At one time the Buddha was staying in the land of the Sakyans, near Kapilavatthu in the Banyan Tree Monastery. Then Mahānāma the Sakyan went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:

    “इदं, भन्ते, कपिलवत्थु इद्धञ्चेव फीतञ्च बाहुजञ्ञं आकिण्णमनुस्सं सम्बाधब्यूहं। सो ख्वाहं, भन्ते, भगवन्तं वा पयिरुपासित्वा मनोभावनीये वा भिक्खू सायन्हसमयं कपिलवत्थुं पविसन्तो; भन्तेनपि हत्थिना समागच्छामि; भन्तेनपि अस्सेन समागच्छामि; भन्तेनपि रथेन समागच्छामि; भन्तेनपि सकटेन समागच्छामि; भन्तेनपि पुरिसेन समागच्छामि। तस्स मय्हं, भन्ते, तस्मिं समये मुस्सतेव भगवन्तं आरब्भ सति, मुस्सति धम्मं आरब्भ सति, मुस्सति सङ्घं आरब्भ सति। तस्स मय्हं, भन्ते, एवं होति: ‘इमम्हि चाहं समये कालं करेय्यं, का मय्हं गति, को अभिसम्परायोऽ”ति?

    “idaṁ, bhante, kapilavatthu iddhañceva phītañca bāhujaññaṁ ākiṇṇamanussaṁ sambādhabyūhaṁ. So khvāhaṁ, bhante, bhagavantaṁ vā payirupāsitvā manobhāvanīye vā bhikkhū sāyanhasamayaṁ kapilavatthuṁ pavisanto; bhantenapi hatthinā samāgacchāmi; bhantenapi assena samāgacchāmi; bhantenapi rathena samāgacchāmi; bhantenapi sakaṭena samāgacchāmi; bhantenapi purisena samāgacchāmi. Tassa mayhaṁ, bhante, tasmiṁ samaye mussateva bhagavantaṁ ārabbha sati, mussati dhammaṁ ārabbha sati, mussati saṅghaṁ ārabbha sati. Tassa mayhaṁ, bhante, evaṁ hoti: ‘imamhi cāhaṁ samaye kālaṁ kareyyaṁ, kā mayhaṁ gati, ko abhisamparāyo’”ti?

    “Sir, this Kapilavatthu is successful and prosperous, populous, full of people, with cramped cul-de-sacs. In the late afternoon, after paying homage to the Buddha or an esteemed bhikkhu, I enter Kapilavatthu. I encounter a stray elephant, horse, chariot, cart, or person. At that time I lose mindfulness regarding the Buddha, the teaching, and the Saṅgha. I think: ‘If I were to die at this time, where would I be reborn in my next life?’”

    “मा भायि, महानाम, मा भायि, महानाम। अपापकं ते मरणं भविस्सति अपापिका कालङ्किरिया। चतूहि खो, महानाम, धम्मेहि समन्नागतो अरियसावको निब्बाननिन्नो होति निब्बानपोणो निब्बानपब्भारो। कतमेहि चतूहि? इध, महानाम, अरियसावको बुद्धे अवेच्चप्पसादेन समन्नागतो होति—इतिपि सो भगवा …पे… सत्था देवमनुस्सानं बुद्धो भगवाति। धम्मे …पे… सङ्घे …पे… अरियकन्तेहि सीलेहि समन्नागतो होति अखण्डेहि …पे… समाधिसंवत्तनिकेहि।

    “Mā bhāyi, mahānāma, mā bhāyi, mahānāma. Apāpakaṁ te maraṇaṁ bhavissati apāpikā kālaṅkiriyā. Catūhi kho, mahānāma, dhammehi samannāgato ariyasāvako nibbānaninno hoti nibbānapoṇo nibbānapabbhāro. Katamehi catūhi? Idha, mahānāma, ariyasāvako buddhe aveccappasādena samannāgato hoti—itipi so bhagavā …pe… satthā devamanussānaṁ buddho bhagavāti. Dhamme …pe… saṅghe …pe… ariyakantehi sīlehi samannāgato hoti akhaṇḍehi …pe… samādhisaṁvattanikehi.

    “Do not fear, Mahānāma, do not fear! Your death will not be a bad one; your passing will not be a bad one. A noble disciple who has four things slants, slopes, and inclines towards Nibbana. What four? It’s when a noble disciple has experiential confidence in the Buddha … the teaching … the Saṅgha … And they have the ethical conduct loved by the noble ones … leading to immersion.

    सेय्यथापि, महानाम, रुक्खो पाचीननिन्नो पाचीनपोणो पाचीनपब्भारो, सो मूलच्छिन्नो कतमेन पपतेय्या”ति?

    Seyyathāpi, mahānāma, rukkho pācīnaninno pācīnapoṇo pācīnapabbhāro, so mūlacchinno katamena papateyyā”ti?

    Suppose there was a tree that slants, slopes, and inclines to the east. If it was cut off at the root where would it fall?”

    “येन, भन्ते, निन्नो येन पोणो येन पब्भारो”ति।

    “Yena, bhante, ninno yena poṇo yena pabbhāro”ti.

    “Sir, it would fall in the direction that it slants, slopes, and inclines.”

    “एवमेव खो, महानाम, इमेहि चतूहि धम्मेहि समन्नागतो अरियसावको निब्बाननिन्नो होति निब्बानपोणो निब्बानपब्भारो”ति।

    “Evameva kho, mahānāma, imehi catūhi dhammehi samannāgato ariyasāvako nibbānaninno hoti nibbānapoṇo nibbānapabbhāro”ti.

    “In the same way, a noble disciple who has four things slants, slopes, and inclines towards Nibbana.”
