    Ascetics and Brahmins (2nd)

    सावत्थियं विहरति।

    Sāvatthiyaṁ viharati.

    At Sāvatthī.

    “ये हि केचि, भिक्खवे, समणा वा ब्राह्मणा वा इमे धम्मे नप्पजानन्ति, इमेसं धम्मानं समुदयं नप्पजानन्ति, इमेसं धम्मानं निरोधं नप्पजानन्ति, इमेसं धम्मानं निरोधगामिनिं पटिपदं नप्पजानन्ति, कतमे धम्मे नप्पजानन्ति, कतमेसं धम्मानं समुदयं नप्पजानन्ति, कतमेसं धम्मानं निरोधं नप्पजानन्ति, कतमेसं धम्मानं निरोधगामिनिं पटिपदं नप्पजानन्ति?

    “Ye hi keci, bhikkhave, samaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā ime dhamme nappajānanti, imesaṁ dhammānaṁ samudayaṁ nappajānanti, imesaṁ dhammānaṁ nirodhaṁ nappajānanti, imesaṁ dhammānaṁ nirodhagāminiṁ paṭipadaṁ nappajānanti, katame dhamme nappajānanti, katamesaṁ dhammānaṁ samudayaṁ nappajānanti, katamesaṁ dhammānaṁ nirodhaṁ nappajānanti, katamesaṁ dhammānaṁ nirodhagāminiṁ paṭipadaṁ nappajānanti?

    “Bhikkhus, there are ascetics and brahmins who don’t understand these things, their origin, their cessation, and the practice that leads to their cessation. What things don’t they understand?

    जरामरणं नप्पजानन्ति, जरामरणसमुदयं नप्पजानन्ति, जरामरणनिरोधं नप्पजानन्ति, जरामरणनिरोधगामिनिं पटिपदं नप्पजानन्ति; जातिं …पे… भवं … उपादानं … तण्हं … वेदनं … फस्सं … सळायतनं … नामरूपं … विञ्ञाणं … सङ्खारे नप्पजानन्ति, सङ्खारसमुदयं नप्पजानन्ति, सङ्खारनिरोधं नप्पजानन्ति, सङ्खारनिरोधगामिनिं पटिपदं नप्पजानन्ति। इमे धम्मे नप्पजानन्ति, इमेसं धम्मानं समुदयं नप्पजानन्ति, इमेसं धम्मानं निरोधं नप्पजानन्ति, इमेसं धम्मानं निरोधगामिनिं पटिपदं नप्पजानन्ति। न मे ते, भिक्खवे, समणा वा ब्राह्मणा वा समणेसु वा समणसम्मता ब्राह्मणेसु वा ब्राह्मणसम्मता, न च पन ते आयस्मन्तो सामञ्ञत्थं वा ब्रह्मञ्ञत्थं वा दिट्ठेव धम्मे सयं अभिञ्ञा सच्छिकत्वा उपसम्पज्ज विहरन्ति।

    Jarāmaraṇaṁ nappajānanti, jarāmaraṇasamudayaṁ nappajānanti, jarāmaraṇanirodhaṁ nappajānanti, jarāmaraṇanirodhagāminiṁ paṭipadaṁ nappajānanti; jātiṁ …pe… bhavaṁ … upādānaṁ … taṇhaṁ … vedanaṁ … phassaṁ … saḷāyatanaṁ … nāmarūpaṁ … viññāṇaṁ … saṅkhāre nappajānanti, saṅkhārasamudayaṁ nappajānanti, saṅkhāranirodhaṁ nappajānanti, saṅkhāranirodhagāminiṁ paṭipadaṁ nappajānanti. Ime dhamme nappajānanti, imesaṁ dhammānaṁ samudayaṁ nappajānanti, imesaṁ dhammānaṁ nirodhaṁ nappajānanti, imesaṁ dhammānaṁ nirodhagāminiṁ paṭipadaṁ nappajānanti. Na me te, bhikkhave, samaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā samaṇesu vā samaṇasammatā brāhmaṇesu vā brāhmaṇasammatā, na ca pana te āyasmanto sāmaññatthaṁ vā brahmaññatthaṁ vā diṭṭheva dhamme sayaṁ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharanti.

    They don’t understand old age and death, their origin, their cessation, and the practice that leads to their cessation. They don’t understand rebirth … continued existence … grasping … craving … feeling … contact … the six sense fields … name and form … consciousness … They don’t understand choices, their origin, their cessation, and the practice that leads to their cessation. They don’t understand these things, their origin, their cessation, and the practice that leads to their cessation. I don’t deem them as true ascetics and brahmins. Those venerables don’t realize the goal of life as an ascetic or brahmin, and don’t live having realized it with their own insight.

    ये च खो केचि, भिक्खवे, समणा वा ब्राह्मणा वा इमे धम्मे पजानन्ति, इमेसं धम्मानं समुदयं पजानन्ति, इमेसं धम्मानं निरोधं पजानन्ति, इमेसं धम्मानं निरोधगामिनिं पटिपदं पजानन्ति, कतमे धम्मे पजानन्ति, कतमेसं धम्मानं समुदयं पजानन्ति, कतमेसं धम्मानं निरोधं पजानन्ति, कतमेसं धम्मानं निरोधगामिनिं पटिपदं पजानन्ति?

    There are ascetics and brahmins who do understand these things, their origin, their cessation, and the practice that leads to their cessation. What things do they understand?

    जरामरणं पजानन्ति, जरामरणसमुदयं पजानन्ति, जरामरणनिरोधं पजानन्ति, जरामरणनिरोधगामिनिं पटिपदं पजानन्ति; जातिं …पे… भवं … उपादानं … तण्हं … वेदनं … फस्सं … सळायतनं … नामरूपं … विञ्ञाणं … सङ्खारे पजानन्ति, सङ्खारसमुदयं पजानन्ति, सङ्खारनिरोधं पजानन्ति, सङ्खारनिरोधगामिनिं पटिपदं पजानन्ति। इमे धम्मे पजानन्ति, इमेसं धम्मानं समुदयं पजानन्ति, इमेसं धम्मानं निरोधं पजानन्ति, इमेसं धम्मानं निरोधगामिनिं पटिपदं पजानन्ति। ते खो मे, भिक्खवे, समणा वा ब्राह्मणा वा समणेसु चेव समणसम्मता, ब्राह्मणेसु च ब्राह्मणसम्मता। ते च पनायस्मन्तो सामञ्ञत्थञ्च ब्रह्मञ्ञत्थञ्च दिट्ठेव धम्मे सयं अभिञ्ञा सच्छिकत्वा उपसम्पज्ज विहरन्ती”ति।

Te kho me, bhikkhave, samaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā samaṇesu ceva samaṇasammatā, brāhmaṇesu ca brāhmaṇasammatā. Te ca panāyasmanto sāmaññatthañca brahmaññatthañca diṭṭheva dhamme sayaṁ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharantī”ti.

    They understand old age and death, their origin, their cessation, and the practice that leads to their cessation.
