Ascetics and Brahmins (2nd)
“ये हि केचि, भिक्खवे, समणा वा ब्राह्मणा वा चक्खुन्द्रियं नप्पजानन्ति, चक्खुन्द्रियसमुदयं नप्पजानन्ति, चक्खुन्द्रियनिरोधं नप्पजानन्ति, चक्खुन्द्रियनिरोधगामिनिं पटिपदं नप्पजानन्ति; सोतिन्द्रियं …पे… घानिन्द्रियं …पे… जिव्हिन्द्रियं …पे… कायिन्द्रियं …पे… मनिन्द्रियं नप्पजानन्ति, मनिन्द्रियसमुदयं नप्पजानन्ति, मनिन्द्रियनिरोधं नप्पजानन्ति, मनिन्द्रियनिरोधगामिनिं पटिपदं नप्पजानन्ति। न मे ते, भिक्खवे …पे… सयं अभिञ्ञा सच्छिकत्वा उपसम्पज्ज विहरन्ति।
“Ye hi keci, bhikkhave, samaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā cakkhundriyaṁ nappajānanti, cakkhundriyasamudayaṁ nappajānanti, cakkhundriyanirodhaṁ nappajānanti, cakkhundriyanirodhagāminiṁ paṭipadaṁ nappajānanti; sotindriyaṁ …pe… ghānindriyaṁ …pe… jivhindriyaṁ …pe… kāyindriyaṁ …pe… manindriyaṁ nappajānanti, manindriyasamudayaṁ nappajānanti, manindriyanirodhaṁ nappajānanti, manindriyanirodhagāminiṁ paṭipadaṁ nappajānanti. Na me te, bhikkhave …pe… sayaṁ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharanti.
“Bhikkhus, there are ascetics and brahmins who don’t understand the eye faculty, its origin, its cessation, and the practice that leads to its cessation. They don’t understand the ear faculty … nose faculty … tongue faculty … body faculty … mind faculty, its origin, its cessation, and the practice that leads to its cessation. I don’t deem them as true ascetics and brahmins. Those venerables don’t realize the goal of life as an ascetic or brahmin, and don’t live having realized it with their own insight.
ये च खो केचि, भिक्खवे, समणा वा ब्राह्मणा वा चक्खुन्द्रियं पजानन्ति, चक्खुन्द्रियसमुदयं पजानन्ति, चक्खुन्द्रियनिरोधं पजानन्ति, चक्खुन्द्रियनिरोधगामिनिं पटिपदं पजानन्ति, सोतिन्द्रियं …पे… घानिन्द्रियं …पे… जिव्हिन्द्रियं …पे… कायिन्द्रियं …पे… मनिन्द्रियं पजानन्ति, मनिन्द्रियसमुदयं पजानन्ति, मनिन्द्रियनिरोधं पजानन्ति, मनिन्द्रियनिरोधगामिनिं पटिपदं पजानन्ति, ते खो मे, भिक्खवे, समणा वा ब्राह्मणा वा समणेसु चेव समणसम्मता ब्राह्मणेसु च ब्राह्मणसम्मता, ते च पनायस्मन्तो सामञ्ञत्थञ्च ब्रह्मञ्ञत्थञ्च दिट्ठेव धम्मे सयं अभिञ्ञा सच्छिकत्वा उपसम्पज्ज विहरन्ती”ति।
Ye ca kho keci, bhikkhave, samaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā cakkhundriyaṁ pajānanti, cakkhundriyasamudayaṁ pajānanti, cakkhundriyanirodhaṁ pajānanti, cakkhundriyanirodhagāminiṁ paṭipadaṁ pajānanti, sotindriyaṁ …pe… ghānindriyaṁ …pe… jivhindriyaṁ …pe… kāyindriyaṁ …pe… manindriyaṁ pajānanti, manindriyasamudayaṁ pajānanti, manindriyanirodhaṁ pajānanti, manindriyanirodhagāminiṁ paṭipadaṁ pajānanti, te kho me, bhikkhave, samaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā samaṇesu ceva samaṇasammatā brāhmaṇesu ca brāhmaṇasammatā, te ca panāyasmanto sāmaññatthañca brahmaññatthañca diṭṭheva dhamme sayaṁ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharantī”ti.
There are ascetics and brahmins who do understand the eye faculty, its origin, its cessation, and the practice that leads to its cessation. They understand the ear faculty … nose faculty … tongue faculty … body faculty … mind faculty, its origin, its cessation, and the practice that leads to its cessation. I deem them as true ascetics and brahmins. Those venerables realize the goal of life as an ascetic or brahmin, and live having realized it with their own insight.”

तस्सुद्दानं
Tassuddānaṁ
पुनब्भवो जीवितञ्ञाय, एकबीजी च सुद्धकं; सोतो अरहसम्बुद्धो, द्वे च समणब्राह्मणाति।
Punabbhavo jīvitaññāya, ekabījī ca suddhakaṁ; Soto arahasambuddho, dve ca samaṇabrāhmaṇāti.
