    At Sāvatthī.

    “तिस्सो इमा, भिक्खवे, एसना। कतमा तिस्सो? कामेसना, भवेसना, ब्रह्मचरियेसना—इमा खो, भिक्खवे, तिस्सो एसना।

    “Tisso imā, bhikkhave, esanā. Katamā tisso? Kāmesanā, bhavesanā, brahmacariyesanā—imā kho, bhikkhave, tisso esanā.

    “Bhikkhus, there are these three searches. What three? The search for sensual pleasures, the search for continued existence, and the search for a spiritual path. These are the three searches.

    इमासं खो, भिक्खवे, तिस्सन्नं एसनानं अभिञ्ञाय अरियो अट्ठङ्गिको मग्गो भावेतब्बो। कतमो अरियो अट्ठङ्गिको मग्गो? इध, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु सम्मादिट्ठिं भावेति विवेकनिस्सितं …पे… सम्मासमाधिं भावेति विवेकनिस्सितं विरागनिस्सितं निरोधनिस्सितं वोस्सग्गपरिणामिं।

    Imāsaṁ kho, bhikkhave, tissannaṁ esanānaṁ abhiññāya ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo bhāvetabbo. Katamo ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sammādiṭṭhiṁ bhāveti vivekanissitaṁ …pe… sammāsamādhiṁ bhāveti vivekanissitaṁ virāganissitaṁ nirodhanissitaṁ vossaggapariṇāmiṁ.

    The noble eightfold path should be developed to directly know these three searches. What is the noble eightfold path? It’s when a bhikkhu develops right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion, which rely on seclusion, fading away, and cessation, and ripen as letting go.

    इमासं खो, भिक्खवे, तिस्सन्नं एसनानं अभिञ्ञाय अयं अरियो अट्ठङ्गिको मग्गो भावेतब्बोति।

    Imāsaṁ kho, bhikkhave, tissannaṁ esanānaṁ abhiññāya ayaṁ ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo bhāvetabboti.

    This is the noble eightfold path that should be developed to directly know these three searches.”

    तिस्सो इमा खो, भिक्खवे, एसना। कतमा तिस्सो? कामेसना, भवेसना, ब्रह्मचरियेसना—इमा खो, भिक्खवे, तिस्सो एसना।

    Tisso imā kho, bhikkhave, esanā. Katamā tisso? Kāmesanā, bhavesanā, brahmacariyesanā—imā kho, bhikkhave, tisso esanā.

    “Bhikkhus, there are these three searches. What three? The search for sensual pleasures, the search for continued existence, and the search for a spiritual path. These are the three searches.

    इमासं खो, भिक्खवे, तिस्सन्नं एसनानं अभिञ्ञाय अरियो अट्ठङ्गिको मग्गो भावेतब्बो। कतमो अरियो अट्ठङ्गिको मग्गो? इध, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु सम्मादिट्ठिं भावेति …पे… सम्मासमाधिं भावेति रागविनयपरियोसानं दोसविनयपरियोसानं मोहविनयपरियोसानं।

    Imāsaṁ kho, bhikkhave, tissannaṁ esanānaṁ abhiññāya ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo bhāvetabbo. Katamo ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sammādiṭṭhiṁ bhāveti …pe… sammāsamādhiṁ bhāveti rāgavinayapariyosānaṁ dosavinayapariyosānaṁ mohavinayapariyosānaṁ.

    The noble eightfold path should be developed to directly know these three searches. What is the noble eightfold path? It’s when a bhikkhu develops right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion, which culminate in the removal of greed, hate, and delusion.

    इमासं खो, भिक्खवे, तिस्सन्नं एसनानं अभिञ्ञाय अयं अरियो अट्ठङ्गिको मग्गो भावेतब्बोति।

    Imāsaṁ kho, bhikkhave, tissannaṁ esanānaṁ abhiññāya ayaṁ ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo bhāvetabboti.

    This is the noble eightfold path that should be developed to directly know these three searches.”

    तिस्सो इमा खो, भिक्खवे, एसना। कतमा तिस्सो? कामेसना, भवेसना, ब्रह्मचरियेसना—इमा खो, भिक्खवे, तिस्सो एसना।

    Imāsaṁ kho, bhikkhave, tissannaṁ esanānaṁ abhiññāya ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo bhāvetabbo. Katamo ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sammādiṭṭhiṁ bhāveti …pe… sammāsamādhiṁ bhāveti amatogadhaṁ amataparāyanaṁ amatapariyosānaṁ.

    The noble eightfold path should be developed to directly know these three searches. What is the noble eightfold path? It’s when a bhikkhu develops right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion, which culminate, finish, and end in the deathless.

    इमासं खो, भिक्खवे, तिस्सन्नं एसनानं अभिञ्ञाय अयं अरियो अट्ठङ्गिको मग्गो भावेतब्बोति।

    Imāsaṁ kho, bhikkhave, tissannaṁ esanānaṁ abhiññāya ayaṁ ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo bhāvetabboti.

    This is the noble eightfold path that should be developed to directly know these three searches.”

    Imāsaṁ kho, bhikkhave, tissannaṁ esanānaṁ abhiññāya ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo bhāvetabbo. Katamo ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sammādiṭṭhiṁ bhāveti …pe… sammāsamādhiṁ bhāveti nibbānaninnaṁ nibbānapoṇaṁ nibbānapabbhāraṁ.

    The noble eightfold path should be developed to directly know these three searches. What is the noble eightfold path? It’s when a bhikkhu develops right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion, which slants, slopes, and inclines to Nibbana.

    इमासं खो, भिक्खवे, तिस्सन्नं एसनानं अभिञ्ञाय अयं अरियो अट्ठङ्गिको मग्गो भावेतब्बोति।

    Imāsaṁ kho, bhikkhave, tissannaṁ esanānaṁ abhiññāya ayaṁ ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo bhāvetabboti.

    This is the noble eightfold path that should be developed to directly know these three searches.”

    तिस्सो इमा, भिक्खवे, एसना। कतमा तिस्सो? कामेसना, भवेसना, ब्रह्मचरियेसना—इमा खो, भिक्खवे, तिस्सो एसना।

    The noble eightfold path should be developed to completely understand …”

    (यदपि अभिञ्ञा, तदपि परिञ्ञाय वित्थारेतब्बं।)

    (Yadapi abhiññā, tadapi pariññāya vitthāretabbaṁ.)

    Imāsaṁ kho, bhikkhave, tissannaṁ esanānaṁ parikkhayāya …pe… ayaṁ ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo bhāvetabboti.

    The noble eightfold path should be developed to finish …”

    (यदपि अभिञ्ञा, तदपि परिक्खयाय वित्थारेतब्बं।)

    (Yadapi abhiññā, tadapi parikkhayāya vitthāretabbaṁ.)

    (Tell in full with “finish” instead of “directly know”.)

    तिस्सो इमा, भिक्खवे, एसना। कतमा तिस्सो? कामेसना, भवेसना, ब्रह्मचरियेसना—इमा खो, भिक्खवे, तिस्सो एसना।

    Imāsaṁ kho, bhikkhave, tissannaṁ esanānaṁ pahānāya ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo bhāvetabbo. Katamo ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sammādiṭṭhiṁ bhāveti …pe… sammāsamādhiṁ bhāveti vivekanissitaṁ virāganissitaṁ nirodhanissitaṁ vossaggapariṇāmiṁ …

    The noble eightfold path should be developed to give up …”

    इमासं खो, भिक्खवे, तिस्सन्नं एसनानं पहानाय अयं अरियो अट्ठङ्गिको मग्गो भावेतब्बो”ति।

    Imāsaṁ kho, bhikkhave, tissannaṁ esanānaṁ pahānāya ayaṁ ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo bhāvetabbo”ti.
