Gandhatthenasutta
The Thief of Scent
एकं समयं अञ्ञतरो भिक्खु कोसलेसु विहरति अञ्ञतरस्मिं वनसण्डे।
Ekaṁ samayaṁ aññataro bhikkhu kosalesu viharati aññatarasmiṁ vanasaṇḍe.
At one time one of the bhikkhus was staying in the land of the Kosalans in a certain forest grove.
तेन खो पन समयेन सो भिक्खु पच्छाभत्तं पिण्डपातपटिक्कन्तो पोक्खरणिं ओगाहेत्वा पदुमं उपसिङ्घति। अथ खो या तस्मिं वनसण्डे अधिवत्था देवता तस्स भिक्खुनो अनुकम्पिका अत्थकामा तं भिक्खुं संवेजेतुकामा येन सो भिक्खु तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा तं भिक्खुं गाथाय अज्झभासि:
Tena kho pana samayena so bhikkhu pacchābhattaṁ piṇḍapātapaṭikkanto pokkharaṇiṁ ogāhetvā padumaṁ upasiṅghati. Atha kho yā tasmiṁ vanasaṇḍe adhivatthā devatā tassa bhikkhuno anukampikā atthakāmā taṁ bhikkhuṁ saṁvejetukāmā yena so bhikkhu tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā taṁ bhikkhuṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi:
Now at that time, after the meal, on their return from almsround, that bhikkhu plunged into a lotus pond and sniffed a pink lotus. The deity haunting that forest had compassion for that bhikkhu, and wanted what’s best for them. So they approached that bhikkhu wanting to stir them up, and addressed them in verse:
“यमेतं वारिजं पुप्फं, अदिन्नं उपसिङ्घसि; एकङ्गमेतं थेय्यानं, गन्धत्थेनोसि मारिसा”ति।
“Yametaṁ vārijaṁ pupphaṁ, adinnaṁ upasiṅghasi; Ekaṅgametaṁ theyyānaṁ, gandhatthenosi mārisā”ti.
“This water flower has not been given. When you sniff it, this is one factor of theft. Good sir, you are a thief of scent!”
“न हरामि न भञ्जामि, आरा सिङ्घामि वारिजं; अथ केन नु वण्णेन, गन्धत्थेनोति वुच्चति।
“Na harāmi na bhañjāmi, ārā siṅghāmi vārijaṁ; Atha kena nu vaṇṇena, gandhatthenoti vuccati.
“I do not take, nor do I break; I sniff the water flower from afar. So based on what evidence do you call me a thief of scent?
य्वायं भिसानि खनति, पुण्डरीकानि भञ्जति; एवं आकिण्णकम्मन्तो, कस्मा एसो न वुच्चती”ति।
Yvāyaṁ bhisāni khanati, puṇḍarīkāni bhañjati; Evaṁ ākiṇṇakammanto, kasmā eso na vuccatī”ti.
Why don’t you accuse someone who does such vandalizing as digging up the roots, or breaking off the flowers?”
“आकिण्णलुद्दो पुरिसो, धातिचेलंव मक्खितो; तस्मिं मे वचनं नत्थि, त्वञ्चारहामि वत्तवे।
“Ākiṇṇaluddo puriso, dhāticelaṁva makkhito; Tasmiṁ me vacanaṁ natthi, tvañcārahāmi vattave.
“I have nothing to say to a person who is a crude vandal, soiled like a used nappy. You’re the one who deserves to be spoken to.
अनङ्गणस्स पोसस्स, निच्चं सुचिगवेसिनो; वालग्गमत्तं पापस्स, अब्भामत्तंव खायती”ति।
Anaṅgaṇassa posassa, niccaṁ sucigavesino; Vālaggamattaṁ pāpassa, abbhāmattaṁva khāyatī”ti.
To the man who has not a blemish who is always seeking purity, even a hair-tip of evil seems as big as a cloud.”
“अद्धा मं यक्ख जानासि, अथो मे अनुकम्पसि; पुनपि यक्ख वज्जासि, यदा पस्ससि एदिसन्”ति।
“Addhā maṁ yakkha jānāsi, atho me anukampasi; Punapi yakkha vajjāsi, yadā passasi edisan”ti.
“Indeed, O spirit, you understand me, and you empathize with me. Please speak to me again, whenever you see something like this.”
“नेव तं उपजीवाम, नपि ते भतकाम्हसे; त्वमेव भिक्खु जानेय्य, येन गच्छेय्य सुग्गतिन्”ति।
“Neva taṁ upajīvāma, napi te bhatakāmhase; Tvameva bhikkhu jāneyya, yena gaccheyya suggatin”ti.
“I’m no dependent of yours, nor am I your servant. You yourself should know, bhikkhu, the way that leads to a good place.”
अथ खो सो भिक्खु ताय देवताय संवेजितो संवेगमापादीति।
Atha kho so bhikkhu tāya devatāya saṁvejito saṁvegamāpādīti.
Impelled by that deity, that bhikkhu was struck with a sense of urgency.
वनवग्गो पठमो।
Vanavaggo paṭhamo.
तस्सुद्दानं
Tassuddānaṁ
विवेकं उपट्ठानञ्च, कस्सपगोत्तेन सम्बहुला; आनन्दो अनुरुद्धो च, नागदत्तञ्च कुलघरणी।
Vivekaṁ upaṭṭhānañca, Kassapagottena sambahulā; Ānando anuruddho ca, Nāgadattañca kulagharaṇī.
वज्जिपुत्तो च वेसाली, सज्झायेन अयोनिसो; मज्झन्हिकालम्हि पाकतिन्द्रिय—पदुमपुप्फेन चुद्दस भवेति।
Vajjiputto ca vesālī, Sajjhāyena ayoniso; Majjhanhikālamhi pākatindriya—Padumapupphena cuddasa bhaveti.
वनसंयुत्तं समत्तं।
Vanasaṁyuttaṁ samattaṁ.
