Gilānadassanasutta
Seeing the Sick
तेन खो पन समयेन चित्तो गहपति आबाधिको होति दुक्खितो बाळ्हगिलानो।
Tena kho pana samayena citto gahapati ābādhiko hoti dukkhito bāḷhagilāno.
Now at that time the householder Citta was sick, suffering, gravely ill.
अथ खो सम्बहुला आरामदेवता वनदेवता रुक्खदेवता ओसधितिणवनप्पतीसु अधिवत्था देवता सङ्गम्म समागम्म चित्तं गहपतिं एतदवोचुं: “पणिधेहि, गहपति, अनागतमद्धानं राजा अस्सं चक्कवत्ती”ति।
Atha kho sambahulā ārāmadevatā vanadevatā rukkhadevatā osadhitiṇavanappatīsu adhivatthā devatā saṅgamma samāgamma cittaṁ gahapatiṁ etadavocuṁ: “paṇidhehi, gahapati, anāgatamaddhānaṁ rājā assaṁ cakkavattī”ti.
Then several deities of the parks, forests, trees, and those who haunt the herbs, grass, and big trees came together and said to Citta, “Householder, make a wish to become a wheel-turning monarch in the future!”
एवं वुत्ते, चित्तो गहपति ता आरामदेवता वनदेवता रुक्खदेवता ओसधितिणवनप्पतीसु अधिवत्था देवता एतदवोच: “तम्पि अनिच्चं, तम्पि अद्धुवं, तम्पि पहाय गमनीयन्”ति।
Evaṁ vutte, citto gahapati tā ārāmadevatā vanadevatā rukkhadevatā osadhitiṇavanappatīsu adhivatthā devatā etadavoca: “tampi aniccaṁ, tampi addhuvaṁ, tampi pahāya gamanīyan”ti.
When they said this, Citta said to them, “That too is impermanent! That too will pass! That too will be left behind!”
एवं वुत्ते, चित्तस्स गहपतिनो मित्तामच्चा ञातिसालोहिता चित्तं गहपतिं एतदवोचुं: “सतिं, अय्यपुत्त, उपट्ठपेहि, मा विप्पलपी”ति।
Evaṁ vutte, cittassa gahapatino mittāmaccā ñātisālohitā cittaṁ gahapatiṁ etadavocuṁ: “satiṁ, ayyaputta, upaṭṭhapehi, mā vippalapī”ti.
When he said this, his friends and colleagues, relatives and family members said, “Be mindful, master! Don’t babble.”
“किं ताहं वदामि यं मं तुम्हे एवं वदेथ: ‘सतिं, अय्यपुत्त, उपट्ठपेहि, मा विप्पलपीऽ”ति?
“Kiṁ tāhaṁ vadāmi yaṁ maṁ tumhe evaṁ vadetha: ‘satiṁ, ayyaputta, upaṭṭhapehi, mā vippalapī’”ti?
“What have I said that makes you say that?”
“एवं खो त्वं, अय्यपुत्त, वदेसि: ‘तम्पि अनिच्चं, तम्पि अद्धुवं, तम्पि पहाय गमनीयन्ऽ”ति।
“Evaṁ kho tvaṁ, ayyaputta, vadesi: ‘tampi aniccaṁ, tampi addhuvaṁ, tampi pahāya gamanīyan’”ti.
“It’s because you said: ‘That too is impermanent! That too will pass! That too will be left behind!’”
“तथा हि पन मं आरामदेवता वनदेवता रुक्खदेवता ओसधितिणवनप्पतीसु अधिवत्था देवता एवमाहंसु: ‘पणिधेहि, गहपति, अनागतमद्धानं राजा अस्सं चक्कवत्तीऽति। ताहं एवं वदामि: ‘तम्पि अनिच्चं …पे… तम्पि पहाय गमनीयन्ऽ”ति।
“Tathā hi pana maṁ ārāmadevatā vanadevatā rukkhadevatā osadhitiṇavanappatīsu adhivatthā devatā evamāhaṁsu: ‘paṇidhehi, gahapati, anāgatamaddhānaṁ rājā assaṁ cakkavattī’ti. Tāhaṁ evaṁ vadāmi: ‘tampi aniccaṁ …pe… tampi pahāya gamanīyan’”ti.
“Oh, well, that’s because the deities of the parks, forests, trees, and those who haunt the herbs, grass, and big trees said to me: ‘Householder, make a wish to become a wheel-turning monarch in the future!’ So I said to them: ‘That too is impermanent! That too will pass! That too will be left behind!’”
“किं पन ता, अय्यपुत्त, आरामदेवता वनदेवता रुक्खदेवता ओसधितिणवनप्पतीसु अधिवत्था देवता अत्थवसं सम्पस्समाना एवमाहंसु: ‘पणिधेहि, गहपति, अनागतमद्धानं राजा अस्सं चक्कवत्तीऽ”ति?
“Kiṁ pana tā, ayyaputta, ārāmadevatā vanadevatā rukkhadevatā osadhitiṇavanappatīsu adhivatthā devatā atthavasaṁ sampassamānā evamāhaṁsu: ‘paṇidhehi, gahapati, anāgatamaddhānaṁ rājā assaṁ cakkavattī’”ti?
“But what reason do they see for saying that to you?”
“तासं खो आरामदेवतानं वनदेवतानं रुक्खदेवतानं ओसधितिणवनप्पतीसु अधिवत्थानं देवतानं एवं होति: ‘अयं खो चित्तो गहपति, सीलवा कल्याणधम्मो। सचे पणिदहिस्सति—अनागतमद्धानं राजा अस्सं चक्कवत्तीऽति, ‘तस्स खो अयं इज्झिस्सति, सीलवतो चेतोपणिधि विसुद्धत्ता धम्मिको धम्मिकं फलं अनुपस्सतीऽति। इमं खो ता आरामदेवता वनदेवता रुक्खदेवता ओसधितिणवनप्पतीसु अधिवत्था देवता अत्थवसं सम्पस्समाना एवमाहंसु: ‘पणिधेहि, गहपति, अनागतमद्धानं राजा अस्सं चक्कवत्तीऽति। ताहं एवं वदामि: ‘तम्पि अनिच्चं, तम्पि अद्धुवं, तम्पि पहाय गमनीयन्ऽ”ति।
“Tāsaṁ kho ārāmadevatānaṁ vanadevatānaṁ rukkhadevatānaṁ osadhitiṇavanappatīsu adhivatthānaṁ devatānaṁ evaṁ hoti: ‘ayaṁ kho citto gahapati, sīlavā1 kalyāṇadhammo. Sace paṇidahissati—anāgatamaddhānaṁ rājā assaṁ cakkavattī’ti, ‘tassa kho ayaṁ ijjhissati, sīlavato cetopaṇidhi visuddhattā dhammiko dhammikaṁ phalaṁ anupassatī’ti. Imaṁ kho tā ārāmadevatā vanadevatā rukkhadevatā osadhitiṇavanappatīsu adhivatthā devatā atthavasaṁ sampassamānā evamāhaṁsu: ‘paṇidhehi, gahapati, anāgatamaddhānaṁ rājā assaṁ cakkavattī’ti. Tāhaṁ evaṁ vadāmi: ‘tampi aniccaṁ, tampi addhuvaṁ, tampi pahāya gamanīyan’”ti.
“They think: ‘This householder Citta is ethical, of good character. If he makes a wish to become a wheel-turning monarch in the future, his heart’s wish will succeed because of the purity of his ethics. And then as a proper, principled king he will provide proper spirit-offerings.’ That’s the reason they see for saying to me: ‘Householder, make a wish to become a wheel-turning monarch in the future!’ So I said to them: ‘That too is impermanent! That too will pass! That too will be left behind!’”
“तेन हि, अय्यपुत्त, अम्हेपि ओवदाही”ति।
“Tena hi, ayyaputta, amhepi ovadāhī”ti.
“Then, master, advise us!”
“तस्मा हि वो एवं सिक्खितब्बं—
“Tasmā hi vo evaṁ sikkhitabbaṁ—
“So you should train like this:
बुद्धे अवेच्चप्पसादेन समन्नागता भविस्साम: ‘इतिपि सो भगवा अरहं सम्मासम्बुद्धो विज्जाचरणसम्पन्नो सुगतो लोकविदू अनुत्तरो पुरिसदम्मसारथि सत्था देवमनुस्सानं बुद्धो भगवाऽति।
buddhe aveccappasādena samannāgatā bhavissāma: ‘itipi so bhagavā arahaṁ sammāsambuddho vijjācaraṇasampanno sugato lokavidū anuttaro purisadammasārathi satthā devamanussānaṁ buddho bhagavā’ti.
We will have experiential confidence in the Buddha: ‘That Blessed One is perfected, a fully awakened Buddha, accomplished in knowledge and conduct, holy, knower of the world, supreme guide for those who wish to train, teacher of gods and humans, awakened, blessed.’
धम्मे अवेच्चप्पसादेन समन्नागता भविस्साम: ‘स्वाक्खातो भगवता धम्मो सन्दिट्ठिको अकालिको एहिपस्सिको ओपनेय्यिको पच्चत्तं वेदितब्बो विञ्ञूहीऽति।
Dhamme aveccappasādena samannāgatā bhavissāma: ‘svākkhāto bhagavatā dhammo sandiṭṭhiko akāliko ehipassiko opaneyyiko paccattaṁ veditabbo viññūhī’ti.
We will have experiential confidence in the teaching: ‘The teaching is well explained by the Buddha—apparent in the present life, immediately effective, inviting inspection, relevant, so that sensible people can know it for themselves.’
सङ्घे अवेच्चप्पसादेन समन्नागता भविस्साम: ‘सुप्पटिपन्नो भगवतो सावकसङ्घो, उजुप्पटिपन्नो भगवतो सावकसङ्घो, ञायप्पटिपन्नो भगवतो सावकसङ्घो, सामीचिप्पटिपन्नो भगवतो सावकसङ्घो, यदिदं चत्तारि पुरिसयुगानि अट्ठ पुरिसपुग्गला एस भगवतो सावकसङ्घो आहुनेय्यो पाहुनेय्यो दक्खिणेय्यो अञ्जलिकरणीयो अनुत्तरं पुञ्ञक्खेत्तं लोकस्साऽति।
Saṅghe aveccappasādena samannāgatā bhavissāma: ‘suppaṭipanno bhagavato sāvakasaṅgho, ujuppaṭipanno bhagavato sāvakasaṅgho, ñāyappaṭipanno bhagavato sāvakasaṅgho, sāmīcippaṭipanno bhagavato sāvakasaṅgho, yadidaṁ cattāri purisayugāni aṭṭha purisapuggalā esa bhagavato sāvakasaṅgho āhuneyyo pāhuneyyo dakkhiṇeyyo añjalikaraṇīyo anuttaraṁ puññakkhettaṁ lokassā’ti.
We will have experiential confidence in the Saṅgha: ‘The Saṅgha of the Buddha’s disciples is practicing the way that’s good, direct, systematic, and proper. It consists of the four pairs, the eight individuals. This is the Saṅgha of the Buddha’s disciples that is worthy of offerings dedicated to the gods, worthy of hospitality, worthy of a religious donation, worthy of greeting with joined palms, and is the supreme field of merit for the world.’
यं खो पन किञ्चि कुले देय्यधम्मं सब्बं तं अप्पटिविभत्तं भविस्सति सीलवन्तेहि कल्याणधम्मेहीति एवञ्हि वो सिक्खितब्बन्”ति।
Yaṁ kho pana kiñci kule deyyadhammaṁ sabbaṁ taṁ appaṭivibhattaṁ bhavissati sīlavantehi kalyāṇadhammehīti evañhi vo sikkhitabban”ti.
And we will share without reservation all the gifts available to give in our family with those who are ethical and of good character.”
अथ खो चित्तो गहपति मित्तामच्चे ञातिसालोहिते बुद्धे च धम्मे च सङ्घे च चागे च समादपेत्वा कालमकासीति।
Atha kho citto gahapati mittāmacce ñātisālohite buddhe ca dhamme ca saṅghe ca cāge ca samādapetvā kālamakāsīti.
Then, after Citta had encouraged his friends and colleagues, relatives and family members in the Buddha, the teaching, the Saṅgha, and generosity, he passed away.

संयोजनं द्वे इसिदत्ता, महको कामभूपि च; गोदत्तो च निगण्ठो च, अचेलेन गिलानदस्सनन्ति।
