    Godhikasutta

    With Godhika

    एवं मे सुतं—एकं समयं भगवा राजगहे विहरति वेळुवने कलन्दकनिवापे।

    Evaṁ me sutaṁ—ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā rājagahe viharati veḷuvane kalandakanivāpe.

    So I have heard. At one time the Buddha was staying near Rājagaha, in the Bamboo Grove, the squirrels’ feeding ground.

    तेन खो पन समयेन आयस्मा गोधिको इसिगिलिपस्से विहरति काळसिलायं। अथ खो आयस्मा गोधिको अप्पमत्तो आतापी पहितत्तो विहरन्तो सामयिकं चेतोविमुत्तिं फुसि। अथ खो आयस्मा गोधिको तम्हा सामयिकाय चेतोविमुत्तिया परिहायि। दुतियम्पि खो आयस्मा गोधिको अप्पमत्तो आतापी पहितत्तो विहरन्तो सामयिकं चेतोविमुत्तिं फुसि। दुतियम्पि खो आयस्मा गोधिको तम्हा सामयिकाय चेतोविमुत्तिया परिहायि। ततियम्पि खो आयस्मा गोधिको अप्पमत्तो आतापी पहितत्तो विहरन्तो सामयिकं चेतोविमुत्तिं फुसि। ततियम्पि खो आयस्मा गोधिको तम्हा …पे… परिहायि। चतुत्थम्पि खो आयस्मा गोधिको अप्पमत्तो …पे… विमुत्तिं फुसि। चतुत्थम्पि खो आयस्मा गोधिको तम्हा …पे… परिहायि। पञ्चमम्पि खो आयस्मा गोधिको …पे… चेतोविमुत्तिं फुसि। पञ्चमम्पि खो आयस्मा …पे… विमुत्तिया परिहायि। छट्ठम्पि खो आयस्मा गोधिको अप्पमत्तो आतापी पहितत्तो विहरन्तो सामयिकं चेतोविमुत्तिं फुसि। छट्ठम्पि खो आयस्मा गोधिको तम्हा सामयिकाय चेतोविमुत्तिया परिहायि। सत्तमम्पि खो आयस्मा गोधिको अप्पमत्तो आतापी पहितत्तो विहरन्तो सामयिकं चेतोविमुत्तिं फुसि।

    Tena kho pana samayena āyasmā godhiko isigilipasse viharati kāḷasilāyaṁ. Atha kho āyasmā godhiko appamatto ātāpī pahitatto viharanto sāmayikaṁ cetovimuttiṁ phusi. Atha kho āyasmā godhiko tamhā sāmayikāya cetovimuttiyā parihāyi. Dutiyampi kho āyasmā godhiko appamatto ātāpī pahitatto viharanto sāmayikaṁ cetovimuttiṁ phusi. Dutiyampi kho āyasmā godhiko tamhā sāmayikāya cetovimuttiyā parihāyi. Tatiyampi kho āyasmā godhiko appamatto ātāpī pahitatto viharanto sāmayikaṁ cetovimuttiṁ phusi. Tatiyampi kho āyasmā godhiko tamhā …pe… parihāyi. Catutthampi kho āyasmā godhiko appamatto …pe… vimuttiṁ phusi. Catutthampi kho āyasmā godhiko tamhā …pe… parihāyi. Pañcamampi kho āyasmā godhiko …pe… cetovimuttiṁ phusi. Pañcamampi kho āyasmā …pe… vimuttiyā parihāyi. Chaṭṭhampi kho āyasmā godhiko appamatto ātāpī pahitatto viharanto sāmayikaṁ cetovimuttiṁ phusi. Chaṭṭhampi kho āyasmā godhiko tamhā sāmayikāya cetovimuttiyā parihāyi. Sattamampi kho āyasmā godhiko appamatto ātāpī pahitatto viharanto sāmayikaṁ cetovimuttiṁ phusi.

    Now at that time Venerable Godhika was staying on the slopes of Isigili at the Black Rock. Then Venerable Godhika, meditating diligent, keen, and resolute, experienced temporary freedom of heart. But then he fell away from that temporary freedom of heart. For a second … third … fourth … fifth … sixth time Godhika experienced temporary freedom of heart. But for a sixth time he fell away from it. For a seventh time Godhika, meditating diligent, keen, and resolute, experienced temporary freedom of heart.

    अथ खो आयस्मतो गोधिकस्स एतदहोसि: “याव छट्ठं ख्वाहं सामयिकाय चेतोविमुत्तिया परिहीनो। यन्नूनाहं सत्थं आहरेय्यन्”ति।

    Atha kho āyasmato godhikassa etadahosi: “yāva chaṭṭhaṁ khvāhaṁ sāmayikāya cetovimuttiyā parihīno. Yannūnāhaṁ satthaṁ āhareyyan”ti.

    Then he thought, “I’ve fallen away from this temporary freedom of heart no less than six times. Why don’t I slit my wrists?”

    अथ खो मारो पापिमा आयस्मतो गोधिकस्स चेतसा चेतोपरिवितक्कमञ्ञाय येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवन्तं गाथाहि अज्झभासि:

    Atha kho māro pāpimā āyasmato godhikassa cetasā cetoparivitakkamaññāya yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ gāthāhi ajjhabhāsi:

    And then Māra the Wicked, knowing what Godhika was thinking, went up to the Buddha and addressed him in verse:

    “महावीर महापञ्ञ, इद्धिया यससा जल; सब्बवेरभयातीत, पादे वन्दामि चक्खुम।

    “Mahāvīra mahāpañña, iddhiyā yasasā jala; Sabbaverabhayātīta, pāde vandāmi cakkhuma.

    “O great hero, O greatly wise! Shining with power and glory. You’ve gone beyond all threats and perils, I bow to your feet, O Clear-eyed One!

    सावको ते महावीर, मरणं मरणाभिभू; आकङ्खति चेतयति, तं निसेध जुतिन्धर।

    Sāvako te mahāvīra, maraṇaṁ maraṇābhibhū; Ākaṅkhati cetayati, taṁ nisedha jutindhara.

    Great hero, master of death, your disciple longs for death, he’s planning for it. Stop him, O light-bringer!

    कथञ्हि भगवा तुय्हं, सावको सासने रतो; अप्पत्तमानसो सेक्खो, कालं कयिरा जनेसुता”ति।

    Kathañhi bhagavā tuyhaṁ, Sāvako sāsane rato; Appattamānaso sekkho, Kālaṁ kayirā janesutā”ti.

    For how, Blessed One, can a disciple of yours, one who loves your teaching, a trainee who hasn’t achieved their heart’s desire, take his own life, O renowned one?”

    तेन खो पन समयेन आयस्मता गोधिकेन सत्थं आहरितं होति।

    Tena kho pana samayena āyasmatā godhikena satthaṁ āharitaṁ hoti.

    Now at that time Venerable Godhika had already slit his wrists.

    अथ खो भगवा “मारो अयं पापिमा” इति विदित्वा मारं पापिमन्तं गाथाय अज्झभासि:

    Atha kho bhagavā “māro ayaṁ pāpimā” iti viditvā māraṁ pāpimantaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi:

    Then the Buddha, knowing that this was Māra the Wicked, addressed him in verse:

    “एवञ्हि धीरा कुब्बन्ति, नावकङ्खन्ति जीवितं; समूलं तण्हमब्बुय्ह, गोधिको परिनिब्बुतो”ति।

    “Evañhi dhīrā kubbanti, nāvakaṅkhanti jīvitaṁ; Samūlaṁ taṇhamabbuyha, godhiko parinibbuto”ti.

    “This is how the wise act, for they don’t long for life. Having plucked out craving, root and all, Godhika is extinguished.”

    अथ खो भगवा भिक्खू आमन्तेसि: “आयाम, भिक्खवे, येन इसिगिलिपस्सं काळसिला तेनुपसङ्कमिस्साम यत्थ गोधिकेन कुलपुत्तेन सत्थं आहरितन्”ति।

    Atha kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi: “āyāma, bhikkhave, yena isigilipassaṁ kāḷasilā tenupasaṅkamissāma yattha godhikena kulaputtena satthaṁ āharitan”ti.

    Then the Buddha said to the bhikkhus, “Come, bhikkhus, let’s go to the Black Rock on the slopes of Isigili where Godhika, who came from a good family, slit his wrists.”

    “एवं, भन्ते”ति खो ते भिक्खू भगवतो पच्चस्सोसुं।

    “Evaṁ, bhante”ti kho te bhikkhū bhagavato paccassosuṁ.

    “Yes, sir,” they replied.

    अथ खो भगवा सम्बहुलेहि भिक्खूहि सद्धिं येन इसिगिलिपस्सं काळसिला तेनुपसङ्कमि। अद्दसा खो भगवा आयस्मन्तं गोधिकं दूरतोव मञ्चके विवत्तक्खन्धं सेमानं।

    Atha kho bhagavā sambahulehi bhikkhūhi saddhiṁ yena isigilipassaṁ kāḷasilā tenupasaṅkami. Addasā kho bhagavā āyasmantaṁ godhikaṁ dūratova mañcake vivattakkhandhaṁ semānaṁ.

    Then the Buddha together with several bhikkhus went to the Black Rock on the slopes of Isigili. The Buddha saw Godhika off in the distance lying on his cot, having cast off the aggregates.

    तेन खो पन समयेन धूमायितत्तं तिमिरायितत्तं गच्छतेव पुरिमं दिसं, गच्छति पच्छिमं दिसं, गच्छति उत्तरं दिसं, गच्छति दक्खिणं दिसं, गच्छति उद्धं, गच्छति अधो, गच्छति अनुदिसं।

    Tena kho pana samayena dhūmāyitattaṁ timirāyitattaṁ gacchateva purimaṁ disaṁ, gacchati pacchimaṁ disaṁ, gacchati uttaraṁ disaṁ, gacchati dakkhiṇaṁ disaṁ, gacchati uddhaṁ, gacchati adho, gacchati anudisaṁ.

    Now at that time a cloud of black smoke was moving east, west, north, south, above, below, and in-between.

    अथ खो भगवा भिक्खू आमन्तेसि:

    Atha kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi:

    Then the Buddha said to the bhikkhus,

    “पस्सथ नो तुम्हे, भिक्खवे, एतं धूमायितत्तं तिमिरायितत्तं गच्छतेव पुरिमं दिसं, गच्छति पच्छिमं दिसं, गच्छति उत्तरं दिसं, गच्छति दक्खिणं दिसं, गच्छति उद्धं, गच्छति अधो, गच्छति अनुदिसन्”ति?

    “passatha no tumhe, bhikkhave, etaṁ dhūmāyitattaṁ timirāyitattaṁ gacchateva purimaṁ disaṁ, gacchati pacchimaṁ disaṁ, gacchati uttaraṁ disaṁ, gacchati dakkhiṇaṁ disaṁ, gacchati uddhaṁ, gacchati adho, gacchati anudisan”ti?

    “Bhikkhus, do you see that cloud of black smoke moving east, west, north, south, above, below, and in-between?”

    “एवं, भन्ते”।

    “Evaṁ, bhante”.

    “Yes, sir.”

    “एसो खो, भिक्खवे, मारो पापिमा गोधिकस्स कुलपुत्तस्स विञ्ञाणं समन्वेसति: ‘कत्थ गोधिकस्स कुलपुत्तस्स विञ्ञाणं पतिट्ठितन्ऽति? अप्पतिट्ठितेन च, भिक्खवे, विञ्ञाणेन गोधिको कुलपुत्तो परिनिब्बुतो”ति।

    “Eso kho, bhikkhave, māro pāpimā godhikassa kulaputtassa viññāṇaṁ samanvesati: ‘kattha godhikassa kulaputtassa viññāṇaṁ patiṭṭhitan’ti? Appatiṭṭhitena ca, bhikkhave, viññāṇena godhiko kulaputto parinibbuto”ti.

    “That’s Māra the Wicked searching for Godhika’s consciousness, wondering: ‘Where is Godhika’s consciousness established?’ But since his consciousness is not established, Godhika is extinguished.”

    अथ खो मारो पापिमा बेलुवपण्डुवीणं आदाय येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवन्तं गाथाय अज्झभासि:

    Atha kho māro pāpimā beluvapaṇḍuvīṇaṁ ādāya yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi:

    Then Māra, carrying his arched harp made from the pale timber of wood apple, went up to the Buddha and addressed him in verse:

    “उद्धं अधो च तिरियं, दिसा अनुदिसा स्वहं; अन्वेसं नाधिगच्छामि, गोधिको सो कुहिं गतो”ति।

    “Uddhaṁ adho ca tiriyaṁ, disā anudisā svahaṁ; Anvesaṁ nādhigacchāmi, godhiko so kuhiṁ gato”ti.

    “Above, below, all round, in the four quarters and in-between, I’ve been searching without success: where has that Godhika got to?”

    “यो धीरो धितिसम्पन्नो, झायी झानरतो सदा; अहोरत्तं अनुयुञ्जं, जीवितं अनिकामयं।

    “Yo1 dhīro dhitisampanno, jhāyī jhānarato sadā; Ahorattaṁ anuyuñjaṁ, jīvitaṁ anikāmayaṁ.

    “He was a wise and steadfast sage, a meditator who loved jhāna. By day and by night he applied himself, without concern for his life.

    जेत्वान मच्चुनो सेनं, अनागन्त्वा पुनब्भवं; समूलं तण्हमब्बुय्ह, गोधिको परिनिब्बुतो”ति।

    Jetvāna maccuno senaṁ, anāgantvā punabbhavaṁ; Samūlaṁ taṇhamabbuyha, godhiko parinibbuto”ti.

    He defeated the army of death, and won’t return for any future life. Having plucked out craving, root and all Godhika is extinguished.”

    तस्स सोकपरेतस्स, वीणा कच्छा अभस्सथ; ततो सो दुम्मनो यक्खो, तत्थेवन्तरधायथाति।

    Tassa sokaparetassa, vīṇā kacchā abhassatha; Tato so dummano yakkho, tatthevantaradhāyathāti.

    So stricken with sorrow that his harp dropped from his armpit, that spirit, downcast, vanished right there.
