Iddhādidesanāsutta
A Teaching on Psychic Power, Etc.
“इद्धिं वो, भिक्खवे, देसेस्सामि इद्धिपादञ्च इद्धिपादभावनञ्च इद्धिपादभावनागामिनिञ्च पटिपदं। तं सुणाथ।
“Iddhiṁ vo, bhikkhave, desessāmi iddhipādañca iddhipādabhāvanañca iddhipādabhāvanāgāminiñca paṭipadaṁ. Taṁ suṇātha.
“Bhikkhus, I will teach you psychic power, the bases of psychic power, the development of the bases of psychic power, and the practice that leads to the development of the bases of psychic power. Listen …
कतमा च, भिक्खवे, इद्धि? इध, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु अनेकविहितं इद्धिविधं पच्चनुभोति—एकोपि हुत्वा बहुधा होति, बहुधापि हुत्वा एको होति …पे… याव ब्रह्मलोकापि कायेन वसं वत्तेति—अयं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, इद्धि।
Katamā ca, bhikkhave, iddhi? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu anekavihitaṁ iddhividhaṁ paccanubhoti—ekopi hutvā bahudhā hoti, bahudhāpi hutvā eko hoti …pe… yāva brahmalokāpi kāyena vasaṁ vatteti—ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, iddhi.
And what is psychic power? It’s when a bhikkhu wields the many kinds of psychic power: multiplying themselves and becoming one again … controlling the body as far as the Brahmā realm. This is called psychic power.
कतमो च, भिक्खवे, इद्धिपादो? यो सो, भिक्खवे, मग्गो या पटिपदा इद्धिलाभाय इद्धिपटिलाभाय संवत्तति—अयं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, इद्धिपादो।
Katamo ca, bhikkhave, iddhipādo? Yo so, bhikkhave, maggo yā paṭipadā iddhilābhāya iddhipaṭilābhāya saṁvattati—ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, iddhipādo.
And what is the basis of psychic power? The path and practice that leads to gaining psychic power. This is called the basis of psychic power.
कतमा च, भिक्खवे, इद्धिपादभावना? इध, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु छन्दसमाधिप्पधानसङ्खारसमन्नागतं इद्धिपादं भावेति, वीरियसमाधि …पे… चित्तसमाधि … वीमंसासमाधिप्पधानसङ्खारसमन्नागतं इद्धिपादं भावेति—अयं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, इद्धिपादभावना।
Katamā ca, bhikkhave, iddhipādabhāvanā? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu chandasamādhippadhānasaṅkhārasamannāgataṁ iddhipādaṁ bhāveti, vīriyasamādhi …pe… cittasamādhi … vīmaṁsāsamādhippadhānasaṅkhārasamannāgataṁ iddhipādaṁ bhāveti—ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, iddhipādabhāvanā.
And what is the development of the bases of psychic power? It’s when a bhikkhu develops the basis of psychic power that has immersion due to enthusiasm … energy … mental development … inquiry, and active effort. This is called the development of the bases of psychic power.
कतमा च, भिक्खवे, इद्धिपादभावनागामिनी पटिपदा? अयमेव अरियो अट्ठङ्गिको मग्गो, सेय्यथिदं—सम्मादिट्ठि, सम्मासङ्कप्पो, सम्मावाचा, सम्माकम्मन्तो, सम्माआजीवो, सम्मावायामो, सम्मासति, सम्मासमाधि—अयं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, इद्धिपादभावनागामिनी पटिपदा”ति।
Katamā ca, bhikkhave, iddhipādabhāvanāgāminī paṭipadā? Ayameva ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo, seyyathidaṁ—sammādiṭṭhi, sammāsaṅkappo, sammāvācā, sammākammanto, sammāājīvo, sammāvāyāmo, sammāsati, sammāsamādhi—ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, iddhipādabhāvanāgāminī paṭipadā”ti.
And what is the practice that leads to the development of the bases of psychic power? It is simply this noble eightfold path, that is: right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion. This is called the practice that leads to the development of the bases of psychic power.”
